Autumn Carnival.
I awoke to the fluttering sound of a vivacious giggle. The shrill tweeting sound coming from downstairs by from what I could assume, was a girl.
Furrowing my brows together in a neat stitch I shifted underneath the abundant amount of cozy blankets that I was under, stirring in my half asleep state.
The high-pitched cheerful laugh continued, followed by a couple of mousy squeals, making me groan.
It was a rather unusual noise to hear, especially in the Phantomhive household which usually, beside the trio of clumsy buffoons, was like a morgue.
In a quick flash I heard the door of the guest bedroom that I was in whip open, and shut again at the speed of lightning. Mey-Rin, who was now inside the chamber, was panting feverishly as she pressed her back against the door, regaining her composure.
I noticed a bright, puffy pink bonnet strapped around her head, clashing with her usual white maid one, and her plum short pigtails.
She looked scared half to death, or like she had just been through an exhausting ordeal which sparked my interest as I yawned lightly.
"Oh, Lady Elsbeth! Thank heavens you're finally up. Lady Elizabeth has been waiting to see you since six in the morning!" Mey-Rin heralded in a panicked, squeaky tone while she went straight to work, laying out my clothes for the day.
"Who is this Elizabeth girl?" I questioned, meandering out of bed still in a nonchalant, slow pace. Easing into my morning with no sense of haste unlike the bespectacled housemaid beside me.
"She is the masters fiance, yes she is. And, when she heard that his Lordship was currently allowing a woman to board here for the time being she wished to meet you immediately, so that is why Lady Elizabeth arrived here so early in the morn!"
"Ciel has a fiance, really?" I inquired, a bit surprised as I strolled over to the vanity mirror, and began to comb through my hair.
"Yes, Lady Elizabeth Ethel Cordelia Midford has been my masters betrothed since they were both very, very young. She's a lovely girl, yes she is! Just a bit high strung, and vehement if I may be so bold as to say. Anyway, she is downstairs in the drawing room anxiously awaiting for your presence." Mey-Rin declared, and with that I got dressed much more quickly then I wanted to, and hastened downstairs to meet the little girl.
Stepping into the spacious room where I heard noise coming from I noticed that the whole entire place had been redecorated with pink.
Glittery jewels hung from every chandelier, curtain, and tapestry in vibrant rose hued shades, brightening the rather dull, dreary mansion up in a very blinding, unsettling way.
Pinks, plums, and corals all were adorned over every piece of furniture in the shapes of shawls, rugs, pillows, accessories, and large bows.
I grimaced at the frilly state of the drawing room while stepping inside for pink really wasn't a flattering hue to me.
"Ooh, there she is!" The girl named Elizabeth hollered out, prancing over towards me, her frilly salmon shaded dress bouncing as she bounded over.
She was a petite, round emerald eyed lady who's cute doll like face was framed by her curly golden locks that were swept up in long pigtails.
Tightly, she embraced me in a hug, greeting me sweetly as if I were a dear friend instead of a mere stranger.
"You're positively lovely, Lady Elsbeth! Like you stepped out of painting! But, why such drab, dark clothes? Its not cute at all!" Elizabeth pouted, poking at the sides of my black dress which had gold accented buttons.
"Well, no need to worry! I can fix that, and turn you into such a cute woman! I'm Elizabeth Midford, Ciel's wife to be, but you can just call me Lizzy. So nice to meet you!"
I shook her hand, and she released me from her bone crushing hug.
"I'm Elsbeth Knight, pleased to meet you too." I greeted just before a grinning Lizzy shoved a vivid, blush toned ruffled dress at me.
"Here, wear this! You'd look so much prettier if you did!" The golden haired girl added. "Honestly, all of the people in this mansion wear such gloomy clothes! I don't like it! No, no I don't."
I tried earnestly to mask the disdain in my sky shaded orbs as I stared at the colorful frock, placing it back down onto the upholstered settee.
"What a nice gesture, Lizzy, for you to offer me this stylish dress, but I'm afraid that pink is simply not my color." I tried to say as politely as I could, but I just received a downcast look of sorrow from her as she pursed her lips.
"But, why!? I prepared that cute outfit just for you once I found out that you were staying here at Ciel's home. Why do you have to wear that ugly black dress!??"
"Elizabeth, please don't make such a fuss. You're giving me a headache." Ciel interrupted, stepping into the drawing room, and taking a seat down onto the blue loveseat.
"Ooh, Ciel! Its so nice to see you again!" Lizzy gleefully rejoiced, immediately forgetting about her previous depressed, agitated mood.
Her face was now back to beaming with the utmost joy.
"What are you doing here anyway, Elizabeth?" Ciel queried, his face shifting into a deep wince as he stared at his revamped mansion.
"Well, I wanted to invite you, Sebastian, and your new guest, Elsbeth, to the Autumn Carnival that's in town today. There will be lots of sweets, games, prizes, and fun things to do! Come with me, Ciel!" Lizzy insisted, taking a seat down beside the aggravated Earl who was trying his best to remain patient.
"No, Elizabeth. I do not wish to attend a carnival which is just a waste of my time. I have work to attend to today." He blurted out, causing the bright green eyed girl to begin to sniffle.
Soon her quiet, little whimpers turned into all out wails, and Lizzy started to cry.
"Ciel, you meanie! I just wanted to have fun with you, Sebastian, and Elsbeth today! H-How could your work be more important!?"
Ciel sighed a long, drained out sigh as he listened to Lizzy continue to throw a fit, her arms thrashing around in discontentment.
"My Lord, how could you make your betrothed cry so much? I do believe that you could spare a couple of hours away from your work in order to spend some time at the carnival today." Sebastian playfully piped up, walking in, making Ciel's eye smolder back at him.
"Fine, I'll come along, Elizabeth. But, just for a little while." Ciel reluctantly complied, merely on the whim to stop her from blubbering, and making his headache worse.
Immediately Lizzy's sobs became smiles, and within a second she was back to her chipper, happy self.
So, we were off to the carnival with Lizzy leading the show.
The Fair was held near the London Bridge which spanned over the River Thames, and I saw a bountiful amount of boats, and gondolas for the festivities rowing along.
The entertainment was eye-catching, causing many people whether they were nobles, of middle class, or just scraping to get by to take time out of their day, and come to partake in the merriment.
There was delicious fair food all from a myriad of different countries, apple bobbing, pony rides, costume contests, games, prizes, face painting, and turnip carving competitions.
Lizzy, solely against Ciel's wishes, dragged him everywhere. Not listening to his muttering complaints, and muffled insults.
While staying mostly in the background, I marveled at all of the happy, grinning from ear to ear families that I encountered.
The fathers all hoisted up their children onto their broad shoulders, the mothers held their offspring's hands tightly to ensure that they didn't get lost within the swarms of people, and the kids all looked so carefree, their warm giggles making me glad to see such things.
I could for a moment be jealous of them, but my envy was short-lived, and I just remained delighted looking at all of the happy, loving families.
Light clouds swept over the sky in swirls of slate blue, and dark silver.
I, leaving the boisterous jubilation, took off past the London Bridge, down near the rivers edge.
I took a seat down onto a little bench which sat beneath the large, billowing branches of an oak tree. The rustling wooden limbs of the grand oak swayed within the frigid autumn air, and the chilly breeze nipped at my rosy cheeks.
From across the slender formation of rippling water I could clearly see the carnival continue on. The laughing, and chitchat more dull now since I was further away. But, I could still easily tell that the joyous mirth was still alive, and well.
Collapsing my black parasol down I placed its curved handle on top of the metal armrest beside me, allowing it to take a break from keeping me out of the direct daylight.
The hardy oak above me that's thick branches curled down nearly to the dead grass was still lush with crisp leaves on it. Not letting much sun rays get to me, the orange, red, and yellow foliage created a circle of complete shade.
Soon, I saw a tousled, worn out looking Earl find his way to where I was hiding, his disheveled look making it seem like he had been mugged rather than just having experienced carnival fun.
With a deep, exhausted sounding groan Ciel took a seat beside me, not even caring about his perfect posture, and allowing himself to fully relax in an arched spine, and flailing limb sort of way.
"How did you manage to escape from Lizzy's grasp?" I inquired, thoroughly amused at how Ciel, a child himself, was having a rotten time at a fair designed for children.
"I ordered Sebastian to keep her busy for awhile, and to win her every prize that she could possibly want."
I smiled lightly, bending down onto the fallen leaf coated soil, and kneeled in front of him, my knees colliding with the dead leaves creating a crunching sound.
With my fingers I took a hold of the two edges of Ciel's untied blue necktie, and I laced them back together once again into a neat bow.
"You really want to make her happy, don't you?"
"Well, Elizabeth comes from a good family, and despite how tiring she may be I've always just had it engraved in me that she was the only one fit to be my betrothed." Ciel stated after I had finished up with his ribbon.
"And, she's the only family that you have left. The only one around who saw you as the happy boy you were before you turned cold." I noted.
Ciel's one uncovered navy orb widened a fraction at my comment before he just masked it with a scowl.
"That's rubbish. How could you, an emotionless Vampire, say something like that anyway?"
"Because I'm not emotionless," I retort, swiftly standing back up, and returning to the bench. "And, despite your adamant denial I know that that's why you put up with Lizzy because she's the only one who you can remember your past with. I know how that feels, Ciel, and you're incredibly lucky to have Lizzy. The only one who I have to remember my past with is Sebastian."
"So, what you spoke of that day I first met you is true? Sebastian did leave you long ago?" Ciel questioned, my remark seeming to have sparked his intrigue.
I just nodded, not really in the mood to battle his prying interrogations.
"Since you're so interested I'll tell you something to entertain you," I started up. "You know how I told you that our pasts are quite familiar? Well, Sebastian saved me too when I needed someone to get me out of the desperate situation that I was in too. I clung to him, he became my everything, and I loved him dearly."
"Did you have a contract with him too?" Ciel asked, now on the edge of his seat. "Why did Sebastian stay by your side anyway? Did he actually love you back?"
I sighed, looking back into my past seemingly becoming harder with each second that passed.
"I am not going to probably answer every one of your questions, Ciel, but no we didn't have a contract between us. I don't know why he stayed by my side for so many years, and I also don't know if Sebastian did love me, or not. He was kind, caring, gentle, and protective of me all without having the bounds of a contract. So, naturally I thought that that was love, but then one day he left without a single word, so I don't know."
"But, you once said that Sebastian told you he loved you back." Ciel further investigated.
"I don't know if his words were sincere, or not," I answered. "Besides, he abandoned me the day after anyway."
"Do you know why he left?" The thoroughly attentive Earl averred, causing my body to stiffen for that was a question that I myself wanted to ask Sebastian for many, many years.
"I have never asked Sebastian why he left, and in some way I don't want to because I'm afraid of his answer... But, anyway. I've revealed more of my story to you, and now I do believe that you will be left without an end again." I said, my sadness returning back, so I efficiently wanted to slide into another topic, much to Ciel's dread.
"Wait, now I'm even more confused then I was before! I order you to tell me the whole story."
With a little chuckle at his words I spun myself around on my heels, and lightly flicked the center of his forehead.
"I'm sorry, but that's the end of today's learning lesson. When I'm in the mood again I might fill you in more, or perhaps I may just leave you in suspense for the rest of your life." I joked, putting up a comical side for the boy, or for myself to hide how I truly felt.
"Now, go back to Lizzy," I stated. "Don't take moments of a loved one smiling for granted."
