Tony - Don't Wake Me
This goes with the How You Met preference and is based on the song above. The inspiration for it came with perfect timing, considering Robert Downey Jr.'s birthday was earlier this week. (Happy 52nd, RDJ!)
I went to bed I was thinking about you
I ain't the same since I'm living without you
All the memories are getting colder
All the things that I wanna do over
You were fuming as you climbed into the jet, and wouldn't even look at Tony when he boarded. The whole team knew that something was going on between you two and kept their distance. Neither of you would remember why you had argued after that day, it was so petty. You were being stubborn. Tony was being stubborn. Neither of you wanted to admit that the other was right. That's all it was.
Cap began briefing you all on the mission, and Tony tried his best to focus, but he was already regretting the harsh words he had spoken to you. He caught the basics of the objective: There had been a terrorist attack on the Delaware Memorial Bridge. It was a rescue mission. They'd worry about the culprits later. Time was of the essence yada yada yada...
I went to bed I was thinking about you
I wanna talk and laugh like we used to
When I see you in my dreams at night
It's so real but it's in my mind
The mission was going as smoothly as it could with two team members not communicating. The silence was killing you both. The most you would say to each other was strictly mission related.
No one could have anticipated that the attackers would come back for round two. It took all of you working together to get the civilians off of the bridge. Now you had to fight off kamikaze planes.
The battle was almost over. The civilians were mostly safe. The only thing left was to take care of the terrorists. There were five planes, all swooping and zig-zagging randomly. Tony caught a glance of you leaping off the bridge and landing, catlike, on top off one as it flew under the bridge. It was pretty hot. You disabled the plane and ejected the pilot with ease. The man floated gently, on a parachute, down to the river.
He was occupied with another plane, and didn't notice you struggling to find a safe way off of the now-out-of-control aircraft. You had made a mistake. It was headed straight back for the remaining half of the bridge and you had no control. The team was still on the bridge. There could still be some straggling civilians up there. You couldn't get it to turn around.
"Tony? You busy?" Your voice crackled over his comm. He glanced your way and was nauseated at what he saw.
"A little. What's up?" He asked, trying to keep his cool.
" I can get this thing to turn, but I need you to catch me."
"On it. I'll be right there." He dropped off the child he was carrying at the shore and made his way over to where you were preparing to jump.
Suddenly, another plane flew up behind him and began firing at you. Tony turned, his suit taking the bullets. He blasted the plane out of the air with several repulsor rays. At this point, he didn't care that there was a pilot in it. They had threatened his (Y/N).
When he turned back around, you were hanging from the wing of the plane, successfully pulling it to the side. His heart dropped when you let go, obviously thinking that he would be there to catch you. He wasn't going to make it in time, having been delayed by the other plane. He turned his thrusters on full speed.
"(Y/N)!" He yelled. He saw you staring up at him when you realized that he couldn't save you. He could see the terror in your eyes as you tumbled toward the waves. "Can anyone reach her?!" He began spouting names, calling for help even though he knew it was too late. You were over a half-mile away from the bridge.
And now, I guess, this is as good as it gets
"(Y/N)!" shouted Tony. He awoke just as you hit the water. He couldn't count the times that his dreams had ended like that. He pulled the blankets tighter around himself and tried to go back to sleep. He couldn't stand to relive that moment over and over, but, sometimes, he didn't. Sometimes, he would see you smiling at him. He might dream that you and he are dancing, slowly, to your song. It was the only way he could still wrap his arms around you and have your head resting on his shoulder. That was why he wanted to keep dreaming.
Don't wake me, 'cause I don't wanna leave this dream
Don't wake me 'cause I never seem to stay asleep enough
When it's you I'm dreaming of
I don't wanna wake up
He did fall back to sleep.
"Tony!" you giggled, curling yourself into the corner of the sofa, "Stop! Stop!" You were out of breath as he tickled you relentlessly.
"Gladly," he laughed, "Just hand it over."
"Never!" you managed to gasp before he tickled you again. You had the tv remote clutched in your fingers and refused to let go.
"Come on, (Y/N)," He paused and looked into your eyes with a grin, "Please?"
You rolled your eyes. "Fine." You gave him the remote, finally catching your breath.
He pecked your cheek before sitting up to select something to watch.
"You better not turn on another corny sci-fi movie."
"I promise."
You snuggled up to him and he put his arm around you. As the opening titles to your favorite show began to play, he smiled at you. "I love you," he said.
"I love you too."
I went to bed I was thinking about you
And how it felt when I finally found you
The dream changed. Now, it was the night you met.
"Mr. Stark, I'd like you to meet my daughter, (Y/N)." An older gentleman approached Tony, he had his arm linked with you. You were wearing a beautiful (your favorite color) dress. Your (y/h/c) hair framed your face perfectly.
"Hello," you said quietly. Your dad had told you about him. He was really famous, really rich, and really snarky.
"Hi." He extended his hand. "Tony Stark."
"(Y/N) (Y/L/N). It's nice to finally meet you. My dad is always talking about you and the amazing deal you two worked out."
He had to leave to talk to his other guests, but he kept coming back to chat with you and your father. He made sure to invite you back.
There was something about you that made him really attracted to you. It was more than just your beauty. He couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was right then, but he was determined to figure it out.
It's like a movie playing over in my head
Don't wanna look 'cause I know how it ends
He dreamt of the time when you went with him to visit kids at the childrens' hospital.
He didn't normally like doing things like that, but having you there with him, and seeing you interacting with the children was enough to make it one of his favorite memories.
The way you made them giggle with your cheesy jokes or a funny story. The way that smile never left your face, even when you knew that the children wouldn't be around much longer. Your radiance brought a sparkle of hope to their eyes.
All the words that I said that I wouldn't say
All the promises I made that I wouldn't break
It's last call, last song, last dance
'Cause I can't get you back, can't get a second chance
And now, I guess, this is as good as it gets
You were sitting on the sofa in the communal room, sniffling. Everyone else was either on a mission or out having personal time. No one saw you crying.
Tony had been out partying, which meant he had been drunk... which also meant that he had had ladies all over him. Even though he had promised to keep his drinking under control. You were mad at him, disappointed too.
You had convinced yourself not to dig into Sam's ice cream that he kept in the freezer.
Tony came upstairs, still slightly hungover, to see you hugging a pillow to your curled up body. "Hey, babe," he called, stepping into the kitchen. When you didn't answer, he stopped. "You alright?"
"No. How's your hangover?" You quipped, not even looking at him.
He had messed up; he knew that. Unfortunately for him, admitting it to you was a bit harder than just knowing. Guilt crept over him and, suddenly, he really didn't want to face you. He was about to skirt around the question, but then he realized that you had been crying.
Stumbling over an apology, he sat beside you. He couldn't understand why you forgave him even after he completely failed at every attempt at expressing how sorry he was. He didn't know why you stayed with him even after all of the times he messed up. How many times had he broken a promise that he'd made to you? You still would be by his side to clean up after him in the end.
Don't wake me, 'cause I don't wanna leave this dream
Don't wake me, 'cause I never seem to stay asleep enough
When it's you I'm dreaming of
I don't wanna wake up
Don't wake me, we're together just you and me
Don't wake me, 'cause we're happy like we used to be
I know, I've gotta let you go
But I don't wanna be alone
"Tony? You busy?"
"A little. What's up?"
Here it was again. He wouldn't wake up until the end. He didn't want to. Maybe, this time, it would be different. This time, he might reach you in time. This time, he would catch you.
You didn't even fall this time. The scene was gone almost before it began.
"Hey, I remember you."
'She remembers? Why didn't she come back?' He forced a friendly smile."You do?"
"Yeah, you were here yesterday."
Oh. He still couldn't believe that you were right there. You were standing in front of him, smiling that gorgeous smile that he hadn't seen in so long. He couldn't wait for the day to come when he could hold you close again.
These dreams of you keep on growing stronger
It ain't a lot, but it's all I have
Nothing to do but keep sleeping longer
Don't wanna stop 'cause I want you back!
The dream faded once more. Nothing replaced it. Tony relaxed into a dreamless, peaceful sleep for the first time in a long while. He wouldn't wake up until the time that F.R.I.D.A.Y. had been set to wake him.
"Thank you, Wanda," said Rhodey. The two stepped out of the elevator quietly. "He needs this."
"It's not a problem. Maybe he won't be so crabby in the morning." Wanda smiled back at Rhodes.
"Oh, that can't be helped. He's always like that."
The two of them had a good laugh before retiring to their bedrooms.
Tony didn't know why he felt more rested every morning, but he didn't complain. He could now focus more on finding a way to restore your memory. For the first time in five years, he finally had a reason to want to wake up.
