Shijie
"But how we get to England?" Shijie asked, completely bewildered.
"Well, how did you get here? And I know you said that you went by the fortune or whatever, but what did you do other than that to get here?" Louise replied. Shijie sighed inwardly. Louise was pretty tough to convince and considering that she stood firm in her opinions, she was even tougher.
"I think of Breachwood, and I here." Louise looked as if she were about to say something but apparently thought better of it and said nothing.
"But me fortune cookie gone. It disappear when I here," he added. Louise suddenly appeared thoughtful.
"But I still have mine," she responded with a jubilant look in her eyes. Then what looked like a wave of disappointment faded out the excitement.
"What?"
"If you haven't noticed, I can't really walk out of here and then just bibbity-bobbity-boo myself back home." He realized she was right. And they probably couldn't walk back all the way back to her house. The possibility of that happening was just unlikely, and plus, it will take a sizeable amount of time - time they couldn't afford to waste. Besides, walking up to Alexa's and Joshua's houses wasn't something people considered not odd. Walking into the school, however would provide them an efficient cover because no one would question a couple of high schoolers in a high school. Almost immediately, a thought perked it's way into his mind, it was the most ludicrous idea he had ever remotely thought of, and he didn't even genuinely know the full extent of his abilities, but it was worth a try.
"Louise, I have a idea," he exclaimed. Louise looked into this eyes, as if trying to read his mind. After not being able to pick up anything she finally said, "Okay, but it better be good."
***
"Are all of your ideas this insane?!" Louise exasperated, her words dripping with disdain, as the bus jumped over a small bump in the road. Shijie glanced at the brain-washed bus driver.
"It's a good idea, yes?" Shijie replied. Louise raked her hands through her hair.
"I'm so getting expelled," she muttered. Shijie had an overwhelming urge to scream. What other choice did they have? And their mission was becoming slightly tattered due to her constant neglect to what was right in front of her.
"I had no other ideas." And I wasn't completely sure it would work, either, Shijie thought to himself. He didn't completely know the full extent of his abilities yet, but considering the fact that he was able to send a telepathic message to Louise definitely told Shijie his abilities didn't stop at just reading other's thoughts. 'Great, no other ideas. How lovely,' emanated a thought from Louise.
"If you no like plan. You no have to do it," Shijie replied with his eyes furrowed, concentrating on exactly what he wanted the bus driver to do. For the most part, he was cooperative, but every so often, Shijie's concentration would waver and the bus driver would start to yell at them, threatening to call the police. However, then, Shijie would work his magic, and the bus driver would murmur something associated how dust bunnies seemed to be appearing everywhere before he would succumb to a deep slumber-like state. With all things considered, it was more like hypnotism than something supernatural. Louise huffed.
"I sorry. America - first time."
"Actually, it would be, 'I'm sorry,' and it would be, 'This is my first time in America.' Anyway, welcome to America, Shijie. If you look to the right and left of you, you will see the regular New Jerseyan environment," she replied monotonously. And for a few minutes, neither said a word and the only sound that hung in the air was that of the reassuring rumbling of the bus. A few minutes passed when the bus came to a halt.
"Here is your destination... Hope you find Starbucks suitable to your liking...," the bus driver said, as if he had just woken up. Shijie glanced over towards Louise. There was nothing fortuitous as to what the bus driver had said this time. Just as he had expected, Louise leaned over, howling in a fit of laughter. Shijie couldn't help but grin.
"I... I'm sorry about earlier sings. Forgive me?" Shijie asked. Truth be told, he felt that he owed no apology. If it wasn't for Shijie, things would have run much more smoothly, but the fact that Louise was more-or-less a stubborn person, there seemed to be more cracks in the road than there really were. Louise sighed inwardly.
"Shijie, I-"
"Hey, what are you kids doing on my bus?!" the bus driver interjected. He scanned his surroundings. "And where the hell am I?!" Crud! I forgot to keep my concentration in check! Shijie walked up in between the aisles of chairs and placed his hand on the bus driver's arm. 'You are our private chauffeur, and we are going to a party. Er - we're also at the party right now,' he thought to the bus driver in Mandarin. It was queer how he could both understand and deliver thoughts in any language. Well, the understanding part was compromised, where the thoughts were in English or whatever language the person was thinking in, but it would be transmitted in Mandarin for Shijie. It was like translate without the Google. Immediately the tension in the bus driver's arms relaxed.
"Have a wonderful time at the party, folks," the bus driver chirped. 'You are going back to Breachwood High School now, because... possessed bunnies are trying to get you. And the only sanctuary that's available is at the school - don't hurry, though! You don't want to look conspicuous.' Fear instantaneously seemed to seep into the bus driver. His eyes widened to the size that of golf balls with an overwhelming urge to run within them. His hands gripped the wheel tightly, his knuckles white. A wave of shame washed over Shijie. He should have been completing his algebra homework, and yet, he was doing some mind tricks with this poor man.
"Shijie, we have to go!" Louise yelled. Shijie nodded, acknowledging her and exited the bus. As soon as he stepped out from it, the doors swung closed with a shudder, and the bus sped off. Louise's house wasn't something Shijie would consider unusual; it was an almost identical copy of all the houses the lined in the block. The house consisted of a porch that stretched out fairly far forward, a pointed roof (sort of one that one would see in a first grade drawing), and two windows in the front. The white paint was already peeling, implying the factor of its age. Louise, however, didn't spend a moment of hesitation examining the outlook of the house, and was instead, walking up to the porch of her house, her ponytail bobbing up and down with each step. A thought suddenly peeked it's way into Shijie's mind.
"Won't parents be at house?" Shijie inquired. Louise came to a sudden halt. She bit her bottom lip.
"Oh crud! Why didn't I think-" she paused. She grinned. "Ah, yes, today is grocery day. She won't be here until two-forty. Darn, am I sneaky, or what?" Shijie shrugged. He couldn't care less how sneaky she was. He just cared that they would be able to get the fortune in time without as much casualties as possible. Without another word, Louise hopped onto the front steps, two at a time, and pulled out a key from her pocket. With a satisfying click, she jerked the key out and pushed open the door. "After you," she said. Shijie walked inside, careful not the trip over the threshold. A pungent odor of lilacs filled Shijie's nose. "I'll be right back!" Louise exclaimed, already halfway up the steps. Evidence of a family was almost in every nook and cranny of the house. Pictures of a young Louise (maybe five to the age of thirteen) and an older couple that, surprisingly, held no resemblance to Louise whatsoever, lined the walls. Her mother had blonde hair, and her father held a much darker brown rather than Louise's chestnut-colored hair. Even the skin tone was a bit off. Whereas the older couple had a pleasant tan, Louise contrasted profoundly with her innocent pale skin. Though the resemblance was not evident, the relationship between Louise and her parents was. In every photo, every being smiled, their eyes twinkling.
"Yeah, people think my parents and I look nothing alike. But I don't really care. I mean, that's really all that legacy crud, isn't it?" Shijie snapped his attention back towards the staircase. Louise was scanning the framed photos in the hall.
"I guess so." Louise produced a small piece of paper -the size of her thumb- from within the side pocket of her jeans. "We haven't a moment to waste, for adventure awaits us!" Louise exclaimed with a horrid mimication of a British accent. Louise descended the stairs and handed the fortune to Shijie. "Okay, do what you did last time, I guess." Shijie despised Louise's lack of seriousness, but accepted the fortune, all the same. He closed his eyes and thought, 'Josh's and Alexa's school' repeatedly until a familiar blindingly-white light engulfed them once more.
