Chapter 37

Third person pov

"Sasuke!" Mikoto cried out with relief as Shisui and the boy approached, holding hands. Shisui had been extremely confused as to why he had to hold hands with what could only be accurately described as a man child, but Sasuke had simply said that it was for the act. Shisui definitely wasn't going to complain. Sasuke was quite possibly scarier than Itachi was, which was saying something. Something about the boy was just... Shisui felt mildly freaked out and intimidated by him.

"Shisui took me to the park!" Sasuke's oddly happy voice made Shisui jump in surprise. Sasuke squeezed his cousins hand hard before the teen could speak, and he winced. "It was lots of fun! And, and he fed me ice cream!"

"Shisui?! Why didn't you say anything?! Weren't you with the search party? Why are you two so late?!"

Sasuke internally grimaced. He'd forgotten about that.

"Huh? No I wasn't." Shisui said in a blunt and sure tone. Sasuke stared at his mother with well hidden caution. She seemed awfully confused, her eyebrows furrowed, and her lips slightly parted as she thought about it. Shisui held his breath. He didn't see any way to swerve this without just downright denying it. Unlike those time traveling brats, he wasn't the most adept liar on the face if the planet. Seriously, these kids could change their entre vibe in less than a second. It was like they flipped a switch, turning on different personalities and pasts.

"W...Well, alright." Mikoto sounded unsure, but she stepped aside to let them in nonetheless. "I hope you watched him!" Mikoto's voice was a pitch higher than usual, emotion clouding her brain and making her feel foggy. Her son, her youngest little boy, had gone out alone with his friends and had come back violated and missing an arm. She knew Shisui was a capable shinobi, but she still worried.

"We held hands almost the whole time." Sasuke assured as he entered, Shisui hesitantly following after him. The teen hoped Mikoto didn't notice the thin sheen of sweat covering his skin. This whole situation made him feel tense. He had joined a band of time traveling war veterans, which made him the odd man out. They didn't trust him. They weren't going to trust him no matter what he did. He understood why, but it made him feel nervous. If something were to go down, he'd be the one thrown under the wagon.

"That's good." Mikoto smiled weakly as she closed the door.

"Mother? Is that Sasuke?!" Itachi's voice called from somewhere in the house, and footsteps reached their ears. Sasuke looked down, and Shisui winced slightly. Itachi wouldn't be happy that Shisui took Sasuke from the safety of this house. The boy was already hesitant to go on missions, fearing what might happen to Sasuke should he leave. Shisui somewhat understood, although now that he knew that Sasuke was some sort of four year old time-traveling powerhouse, he felt the urge to snort at Itachi's concern.

"Itachi!" Sasuke cheered as the boy came into view. The boy's brother seemed to sag in relief upon seeing him, and he rushed forward, scooping him up. Shisui watched Sasuke's entire body tense, his muscles bunching together dangerously, and his eyes momentarily narrowing. Shisui felt himself tense too, but Sasuke was quick to diminish the expression, smiling happily and forcing his body to relax.

"Where were you? Do you know how worried we were? We looked everywhere for you." Itachi looked at the boy, concern swimming in his dark eyes. Sasuke tensed ever so slightly, his smile becoming tight with caution. Itachi looked to Shisui, who shuffled his feet awkwardly.

"I...I told Shisui dad said I could go to the park..." Sasuke admitted shamefully as his mother scurried off to get blankets, as though Sasuke may be cold and traumatized from his trip outside the house.

"Shisui was searching with us." Itachi's body went tense, and his head snapped up, his eyes meeting Shisui's wide and horrified ones. Itachi looked down at Sasuke, who's face had gone blank. Itachi looked at Shisui again, his eyes narrowing. His hand inched towards the kunai pouch still around his leg, his eyes moving to Sasuke. Itachi tightened his grip, taking a small step away from Itachi.

"Did he do anything to you?" Itachi backed up more.

"It's not what you think, I swear!" Shisui immediately defended. "I- uh, well, you see I didn't know that... U-Uh-" Shisui panicked.

"Sasuke, did he t-" Sasuke slapped a hand over his brother's mouth, his face uncharacteristically stony. Itachi froze at the expression as his younger brother scowled, turning to glare at Shisui, who chuckled awkwardly. This was mostly his fault, but it's not like he knew Sasuke was going to turn out to be a time traveler stuck in his younger body. And he certainly didn't think this far ahead, either. He should have told Sasuke all the people who saw him go into the woods...

"You fucking dumbass." Itachi flinched at Sasuke's language, his kunai clattering to the floor. He stared. What was going on? Why was... Sasuke had been smiling just a minute ago. This person... h-he wasn't Sasuke. What happened? What did Shisui do? "Help me tie him up before he tells someone."

"W-What?!" Shisui shrieked, but it was too late. Sasuke had his Sharingan on, and he was already looking straight into Itachi's wide eyes.

"You were at the park?" Shikaku's eyes narrowed. "With the Kazekage and his son?"

"We're friends!" Shikamaru defended, knowing his argument wasn't that good. He'd basically dragged the Kazekage off, hissing rudely at him and nearly kicking him in the leg. All in front of the Hokage, too. Bundled up with all the other stuff he'd done, he didn't see himself getting off easily. If he got off at all, that is. His father was staring at him with a look that made him feel just a little scared. He knew he'd been pushing it.

"Shikamaru... Are you lying to me?" Shikaku asked seriously. Shikamaru didn't let his alarm show. He stared right up at his father, his gaze unwavering. The man stared right back, a heavy sadness in his eyes.

"No." Shikamaru said.

"Sh... Shikamaru." Shikaku sighed heavily and nodded, looking to the ceiling. Shikamaru's whole body went rigid. They weren't alone. "Grab him."

He was grabbed before he could do a thing, and his world went black.
