Nobody ~ With the Light
It wasn't until the hallucinations shattered that Nobody realized that the scene that had danced before his eyes had been real. The festival had been one of the few days each year that was set aside for celebration by the capital. If his memory served him correctly the day had been the day that the rebels surrendered during some long forgotten rebellion. For young Nobody, that festivel had been proof that good could come from bad things.
Much like Everybody.
Everybody had been a mutt designed to drive Nobody insane; instead he became the only thing to keep him sane. They were both broke the capital's mold and in that one similarity the two found consolence and a loyalty that, as far as Nobody was concerned, would last until they died. Which in his case probably wouldn't be very long.
Everybody was also missing at the moment. The hallucination that had toyed with Nobody's mind had played before his eyes, however his body was very much still in the arena and when he had run, he had left Everyone behind.
Guilt wracked Nobody's body as he wandered the halls recklessly, not even bothering to peek around corners or tiptoe quietly. He knew he should; that it might even save his life but he was just so tired. His limbs were sore aching with each step, his wounds reminded him constantly of their existence and his stomach begged for food loudly. Nobody's chest hurt more than all of that put together. It felt as though a giant weight had settled upon it and was slowly crushing him. There was hardly a doubt in Nobody's mind that he was going to die, but when he died he wanted to be with Everyone.
"Everyone, you stupid jabberjay! Get back here!" He yelled, his voice hoarse as he looked either way, his eyes scanning for something that looked even remotely familiar- however new turn just mirrored the one before it. "Please come back, Everyone! Please! I didn't mean to leave you...." You're my friend. Perhaps the only one I ever had, he added in his head. He swore he could physically feel his heart break in that moment, shattering under the pressure that surrounded him.
Water filled his eyes blurring everything around him. He walked over to a lone cart that lined the particular hall he was in and stared at it blankly. He fought the tears with every fiber of his being, it wasn't his fault. He wasn't in his right mind, he would have never left the bird willingly. Suddenly he was sure the capital had put him under that hallucination to steal Everybody away from him, for no one defects from the capital and lives to tell the tale; not even a little jabberjay. Nobody's heart tightened. If they touched his bird he would murder them all- every last one. Nobody's eye caught one of the many camera lenses that hung from every angle and sent a long glower into it. He wanted to scream at it but refrained, he couldn't let them know that their deaths were currently pending, turning slowly like gears in the clock of fortune.
Right now, Nobody simply had to focus on surviving long enough to get his revenge. Nobody needed someone to lean on, he didn't have the strength to do this alone. On top of the cart that he stood before his eyes focused on a lone metal paperclip. He picked it up and held it to the electric lighting. "I shall call you Spot, and you shall be my friend." Nobody declared trying not to think of Everybody as the words left his mouth.
Spot said nothing.
Nobody hugged the paperclip to his chest turning to lean against the wall and sink slowly to the floor. "Spot, I am so confused. And sad. And lonely. I have no idea as to who I am." Nobody had wanted to add that he missed Everybody, but he didn't want to hurt Spot's feelings. The paperclip was being so kind filling in for Everybody and all. "I- I found a piece of paper in my hallucination. It had a picture of me on it along with some other guy. It said I was wanted for treason. Well actually they called me 'Somebody' but I guess they just spelled my name wrong right?" Nobody sigh, sinking deeper against the wall. Somehow he knew that was true, he couldn't remember why he had rebelled but even as he sat there he could feel a familiar wave of defiance rise within him.
Familiar...? He couldn't remember anything why was it familiar? A flash of the man's face that had been on the poster beside his flickered in his memory. Reddick. His heart jumped. He could remember! He felt strange memories locked away in my head cascade free like water breaking free of a collapsing dam. Strange images and vibrant emotions flooded his head, each begging for his attention. Some of them were urgent and others were downright terrifying, but the one that won Nobody's attention was one that promised him peace, at least for a second anyway.
Nobody sat in an alleyway across from a younger version of himself. The child was scrawny with his hair more than a tad too overgrown, hanging in golden brown curls around his face. The eyes were the same though; two round grey colored orbs staring attentively at whoever Nobody's present self possessed. Nobody felt his arms reach up before his eyes holding a fold of cards. The arms before him were just as skinny and youthful as the younger version of himself that sat across from him.
Little Nobody grinned raising up a deck of his own. "This is so on." He giggled placing a won card down on the pavement before him.
Present Nobody did the same thing as he felt himself let out a defiant laugh. "In your dreams! They call you Nobody for a reason." Little Nobody only rolled his eyes placing the card in front of him again.
Card games of any shape form or type had always made Nobody feel good. He liked the predictability in them paired with the gentle suspense of wondering who out of them might win. It wasn't like the Hunger Games where there was no such thing as predictability and where the suspense could drive you to insanity.
The card game would have been a pleasant memory that is; until whoever Nobody's body possessed felt the need to look to one side. Nobody wasn't ready for what his eyes fell upon reflected in the shards of a broken window that someone had propped against a garbage can.
In the horrifying instant he completely understood why he kept having out of body memories. He understood how he had died and still stood here. The fact was that he had probably never have been shot at all. The boy who stared back at him had wide grey eyes and short brown curly hair covered by an oversized grey beanie.
He, Nobody Westing, was a twin.
Without warning the boy in the reflection smiled, his face divided by the cracks in the glass. Nobody felt that his face was still slack. "Congratulations, you figured it out! But you are missing the most important detail." The boy's haunting voice curled from the mirror. Nobody glanced back over his shoulder at... other Nobody. He hadn't seemed to of have heard anything as he was still playing his card game.
Detail? What could he be missing? Nobody and his twin seemed to have the same name, but that could just be the result of a lazy mother or father, right? "You lied Nobody." The reflection snorted. "Or should I say Somebody. The real Nobody is dead, shot to death in the woods. You told the peacekeepers that you were your goody two shoes brother to avoid the criminal charges meant for you. I wonder what the gamemakers will do when they find out, if you were to win would your victory even count?"
Nobody blinked. He couldn't think. He couldn't speak. All he could do was stare at the mirror in absolute shock. That was when all insanity broke loose. The boy threw his head back and laughed crazily as tentacles poked through his eyes and one huge one extended from his mouth. Nobody gagged at the gruesome image- then one of the tentacles shot from the image on the broken glass and wrapped around his ankle it yanked him backward, pulling him toward the sharp glass.
A cry ripped from Nobody's throat as he tried to spin on his stomach to grab something- anything. His flailing arms only found air. Nobody's foot hit the glass and his flesh began to shred in the glass.
Nobody stopped remembering. He was fairly sure that the last part had never happened. He shivered at the gruesome memory feeling sick. Apparently the capital had planted that in there, how many other false memories awaited him if he dared to delve deeper into his mind?
Nobody wasn't sure but as his mind lept back to his conversation that he had with with possessed glass version of himself he knew that he needed answers. He needed to know for sure if he really wasn't who he said he was and why he'd done this in the first place and most importantly if he had been responsible for his brother's death. Answers scared Nobody on some level, but not knowing scared him twice as much.
And so, Nobody began the extensive search, deep into the darkest parts of his mind.
It was going to be a long night.
