Nobody ~ Lightness in the Dark

Nobody decided that if he were someone else he wouldn't want to be his friend. While it was true he had no clue as to who he was, with every little tendency he discovered he had he hated himself even more.

The jabberjays weren't helping either.

They swarmed around Nobody who sat huddled in the white washed room that he'd stumbled into after the bloodbath. Their cries ripped at his ears like fingernails on a blackboard, tore at his chest as if they were eating it, and rattled his mind as if they were only tugging at soft dirt of an eroding hill. Nobody hadn't moved since the birds had come in, he had just stared blankly ahead at broken wooden table in the centre of the room trying to think, which he was discovering was near impossible.

"You are nothing!" A bird flew dangerously near his head. "Nothing! Nothing! Nothing!" It chanted.

Well... my name is Nobody, so.... Nobody reasoned with mild irritation as his gaze flitted to the body of the tall boy who lay facedown on the ground in a pile of his own blood that contrasted sharply by the stark white of the room and of the large 6 stitched on the back of his coat. If Nobody wasn't nothing he would have tried to make an alliance with the boy before he'd attacked him. Yes, Nobody was nothing and you could hardly begrudge the bird for telling the truth.

In his other ear he heard the screech of the girl that he had killed yesterday, it sounded just as long and as horrified as it had as Nobody had slowly squeezed the life out of her. The memory sent shivers down his spine. He drew his knees in closer into his chest, but still he stared blankly ahead as if in a trace.

"Are you okay?! Dammit please be okay!" The voice from his memory taunted at his ear, daring Nobody to flinch. Nobody felt the jabberjay's claws rake the side of his cheek and attempt to tug his hat from his head. His hands flew instinctively up to his head clamping the beanie back into his head and pinched his eyes shut. "Are you okay?! Dammit please be okay!" The voice repeated as the memory of himself dying in his arms flashed before his vision sending a wave of nausea washing over him.

"You're dead, Nobody, and this is your afterlife; your eternal punishment." The jabberjay's voice snaked into his ears, Nobody could feel the bird's sharp quick breathes in his ears. The sense just fueled the growing energy in his chest. The energy swirled in his chest and infected every inch of his body, whether it was fear, anger or both Nobody had no clue but he knew he couldn't take it.

And Nobody exploded. In one fluid movement he leapt to his feet and screamed at the top of his lungs. "Dahm you birds! Just shut up, you flying pillows! I'll fucking kill you all!" His voice broke in his raw throat.

This only ignited the birds, they screeched louder, dive bombing his face and scratching his skin. "You're dead! You're dead! You're dead! You're dead! You're dead!" They chanted like hostile children on a playground who were making fun of a weak link, only Nobody wasn't a weak link, he was a bomb waiting to explode.

Nobody wasn't even aware of what his plan was as he ran through the diving birds toward the table in the center of the room. Nobody sent his foot barreling into the weak frame, crushing it underneath his wait. "If I'm dead these dahm birds have nothing to worry about." He whispered in a dull monotone, his voice as hollow as the inside of his chest. "The dead can't hurt the living." He grabbed two of the legs and began rubbing the untreated wood together, faster and faster he twisted the wood in his hands until a plume of smoke erupted from copper colored wood. Nobody grimace and lifted the end of his torch into the air, the jabberjays flew away from it, suddenly realizing the pending danger. The unstable tribute from district 8 had a torch and judging by the devilish look in his eye he wasn't afraid to use it.

He pounced, swinging the burning stick toward the jabberjay's who had nowhere to go in the low ceilinged room except the door. Nobody watched as the burning birds fell to the ground in plums of flames, they shouldn't have messed with him, they brought this upon themselves, he reasoned as the last of the birds fought to get out the door. The burning jabberjay's wailed in agony on the ground begging in a thousand voices for mercy, one by one they all went silent though. The knot grew in Nobody's stomach until it became sickening, he let the burning wood fall to the ground mixing in with the rest of the smoke and fire that burned Nobody's lungs.

Nobody knew he should move, he knew that if he would stay in there he would die, but he couldn't bring himself to move. There was something strangely consoling about the flames that danced around him joyfully, preparing to kill him. In that moment, surrounded by death on all sides, Nobody felt okay. It was the happiest moment he could remember.

And then he heard it. "Just keep fighting and everything will be okay." His last words from his memory. Nobody looked down at the small dark huddled figure that dragged it's broken body through the billowing smoke toward him. It was a lone jabberjay, it's feathers singed and its wing broken. As Nobody stared at it for a long second he realized it was just as broken as he felt, it had been forced into these games to hurt people like he had.

Without another word Nobody scooped up the fragile bird, tucking it tenderly under his coat and ran out of the burning room and toward the rest of the games.
