Indigo ~ The Massacre

Only in my life can a fun filled get-together somehow warp into a massacre. Quite frankly, I'm not even sure what exactly happened, one second I was downing my seventh cup of coffee and the next someone screamed "Shapeshifter!" and the entire evening broke into mayhem.

But really, I shouldn't have expected anything else.

A girl with raven black hair and eyes that reflected in the window beside us was the first one to attack me. I had just been sitting there, frozen mid sip, trying to figure out what was going on. My eyes had scanned the previously warm scenery full of misfits like myself mingling carelessly that had collapsed into a full out warzone. Gunshots ricocheted off the sides of the room mixing with the dying screams of those who lay on the floor sucking in their last breath. Hunters and shifters clashed against each other ferociously for dominance of the little restaurant.

I had ducked just in time and then responded appropriately by flinging the cup at her face. She had shrunk backward a little bit but it didn't seem to scald her skin like it would have done to my own. I stood up and grabbed my chair and cracked it against her body to the best of my ability, she stumbled but didn't fall, her face contorting into something hideous. "It's kind of insulting that you think a chair can kill me."

I backed up wracking my brain for something that would tell me how to kill a shapeshifter. I had never fought one before, the girl tossed the chair aside and lunged at me, her fist crashing into my jaw. Pain electrified my body as I fell backward and hit the ground. I turned my head to the side only to find a dead woman staring right past me, her pale skin stained with the blood that dripped from her skin. I tried not to gag at the sight of the twisted flesh on her forehead. I had seen dead bodies in the movies before but movies couldn't capture the penetrating stench or the waxy feeling of lifeless skin.

I looked away as quickly as I had seen it. The shapeshifter had pulled out a knife in the brief time I had spent looking at the corpse and was advancing quickly. Thinking quickly I kicked her in the stomach sending her tumbling backwards. With a crazed desperation I got to my feet as quickly as possible and looked at the hunters around me who here fighting savagely.

Silver. All the weapons were coated in silver. My eyes shot over to my messanger bag full of weapons that I had stuffed under the table I had been dining at. The shapeshifter attacking me charged me and I ducked under her arm, making a desperate dive to my bag. I ripped it open, my fingers closing around the hilt of the silver loaded pistol that I kept loaded at all times.

The shapeshifter's clammy palms closed around my neck, her fingers hooking around my jawline as if she was going to try and crack my neck. With my heart thundering in my chest I fired the gun over my shoulder to the best of my ability.

I heard the 'thunk' of a body hitting the ground and I crained my neck around to see the shapeshifter writhing on the ground in pain. It only took one more well aimed shot to end her.

"Indi!" I turned spun around to see one of the hunters I had spoken to earlier sprinting towards me. "My gun is out of bullets, give me yours." He panted, looking over his shoulder nervously.

Hardly hesitating I started to extend the gun to him. Something stopped me though as my eyes laid themselves on another Andre leaping over two female corpses. I pulled the gun away from Andre's fingers and taking a step backward. The Andre next to me started to grab at it but I turned the gun on him. I watched his eyes fill with hurt and frustration. "Come on just give it to me!" He cried irritably.

"No, give it to me Indi! This shapeshifter has disguised itself as me!" The other one cried running over to us. I swung the gun slightly pointing it at him, resisting the urge to politely ask whoever the real shapeshifter was to give me a break and just go home. It was a stupid, immature notion but I felt completely stuck and I had no idea what I should do.

"Indi," The one on the left said looking nervously at the one on the right, "You can tell a shapeshifter by looking at them through a lense. Take my camera and see for yourself." I watched his hands slowly pull the camera from around his neck.

"No!" The other one cried furrowing his brow in confusion. "Indi, don't listen to him! Thats complete nonsense, he is just trying to get you to put the gun down so that he can wrestle it out of your hands and kill you." He cried looking at me pleadingly and then added, "We have to kill these damn things. Shoot us both if that is what it takes." That sounded like the boy I had talked to earlier.

The other Andre shook his head, tears beginning to stream from his eyes. "No! Indi, don't listen to that goddamned thing! Don't you dare!" I turned the gun to the boy and after one long, heavy second I forced myself to pull the trigger trying to shake the feeling in my gut that screamed that something wasn't right.

Just like that Andre lay sprawled on the ground bleeding to death as the shapeshifter gave me a mocking salute and ran out the door. I felt my gun clatter to the ground as my hands fell to my sides weakly. The evening had turned into a massacre, who would have known that I would be one of the ones responsible for it?
