Animal Farm

It was cold in their dorm, but that wasn't why they couldn't sleep. James, Peter and Sirius all lay awake on their beds, silently staring at the ceiling or at the big full moon hanging in the sky. Sirius looked at it with sad eyes, it's bright silvery light reflecting in his eyes.

"Sirius, go to sleep." Peter said suddenly, his voice soft.

"I'm fine." Sirius said, he tried to be confident but his voice failed him.

"We get it, you're worried about Remus, we are too. But losing sleep can't help him." James said, looking over at his best friend. "We'll see him tomorrow. Until then, get some rest."

Sirius sighed loudly. It was the same situation every full moon; he could never sleep knowing what Remus was going through. Repositioning himself into a more comfy position, he yawned and closed his eyes.

Someone was shaking him awake. Soft sunlight blinded his vulnerable eyes. Groaning as he sat up, he opened his eyes and saw Peter next to him.

"I'm going to get Remus now. Coming?" Peter asked.

Sirius nodded. Dressing as quickly as his tired body could, Sirius and Peter made their way down to the Whomping Willow. James would, hopefully, be there soon after them with a small energy potion for Remus. Sirius was carrying spare clothes incase Remus shredded his; it happened sometimes.

"Know what. You can get him this morning. I'll get in the way." Peter said, suddenly stopping.

"No, come on Pete, Remus will want you there as well."

But Peter was already walking back up the stairs. Sirius watched him with confusion, usually Peter couldn't wait to see Remus fine again. Shrugging, he waved off Peter's behaviour and carried on down the stairs.

It had never occurred to Sirius just how beautiful Hogwarts was first thing in the morning. The way the sunrise brought everything to life, the way the breeze woke up the world, the way you could just lose yourself.

"No. Job to do." Sirius scolded himself, shaking the daydream from his mind.

He hummed as he froze the Whomping Willow and as he walked through the passage way to the Shrieking Shack.

When Sirius opened the bedroom door on the first floor, he stopped when he saw the battered figure of Remus. Some full moons were worse than others, and it looked like it had been one of the toughest yet.

"Rem, it's time to get up and go back up soon." Sirius said softly, shaking him awake.

Remus groaned in reply. Looking up at Sirius with half-open sleepy eyes, he said, "Don't want to."

"I know, but you can't stay here all day."

"Can we stay a little longer?" Remus asked.

"Of course." Sirius said, lying next to him. "I brought you a spare set of clothes ."

Remus took the clothes that lay on top of Sirius and put them under his head as a pillow. For a while, the two said nothing.

"Book." Remus suddenly.

"No, Rem, those are clothes. C-L-O-T-H-E-S. Fabric you wear ... or in your case use as a pillow."

"No, in the wall, there's a book."

"Okay, so?" Sirius said, confused.

"Read to me." Remus asked, sounding more awake.

"Wait what?"

"Read to me, please?" Turning his head to face his friend, he gave his best 'puppy eyes' that he could muster.

"Damn you Lupin and your wonderful eyes." Sirius muttered as he slid off the bed.

Sirius retrieved the book from the wall and sat cross-legged on the bed, Remus' head in his lap. And he read to him. To Remus, his voice was something he wanted to hear forever.

Forever ended at about lunch time when they both realised how hungry they were. Fully clothed, Remus though to himself, "Until the next moon", as he put the book back in the wall and followed Sirius up to the school.
