Trick or Treat
I have heard of the spooky tale that apparently occurs in our little town on the night of Halloween.
Apparently on midnight exactly, not a second earlier or later, the dead arise from their graves on the cemetery, only a few blocks away from my house. And according to legend, they take one poor soul with them every time and that one person is never seen again.
But I never believed it to be true. "A tale is all that it is", I say, when people confront me with this and ask me, if I reckon it to be true.
I guess I should never have said that, because today is the night of Halloween and I am about to have the worst night of my life.
---------------------------------------------
I am roaming the streets with my two best friends, Ella and Leila, going around trick or treating, although we are probably way too old for that. We all turned fifteen this year, but going from house to house trick or treating on Halloween has been our tradition for as long as I can remember.
I cannot imagine a year without trick or treating and I know that Ella and Leila feel the same. All three of us are dressed as skeletons, knocking on all the front doors we pass.
"Trick or treat", we shout in sync, when the front doors open.
"Wow, don't you three look amazing", a little old lady answers, when she sees us. "Here you go", she holds out a bowl, filled with sweets.
"Thank you", we reply, after we have each taken a sweet out of the bowl.
"This was a really productive night", Ella smiles, as she takes a peak into her full sweets bag.
Leila and me agree, before we split up to make our way home.
I need to walk a few blocks from here to get to my house. This would not be a problem, if I did not have to go through the cemetery... But there is no other way home.
The graves are surrounded by darkness and I need to get out my phone to light my way.
Suddenly, I see a shadow ahead of me. It is coming closer.
Slowly the light of my phone falls onto the shadow, standing only a few feet away from me.
"Wow, I call that a scary skeleton costume. It looks so real. Where did you get that from?" I ask the stranger.
"Hello Sophia, we have been awaiting you", the stranger answers in a whisper.
"W...e...? Who is we...? And how do you know my n...name?" I am frightened, but my entire body is stiff and will not budge. I cannot run and I cannot scream.
Now I can see the stranger. What I thought was a skeleton costume, turns out to be a real skeleton and he is out to get me.
Then, the light from my phone fades and I do not hear or see anything anymore...
