The mysterious house
"Are you ready?" my friend Stacey calls up the stairs, waiting to go out to a party we have been invited to.
"Coming now", I reply and come crashing down the stairs like a heard of elephants, the cape of my vampire costume trailing along behind me.
"Wow, you look amazing", Stacey smiles.
"And so do you, twin vamp", I says, smiling back at her.
Stacey and me have decided to both go dressed as vampires, because we just love having the same things and that also includes wearing the same scary costume for this awesome Halloween party we are invited to.
"We are leaving now, mum. See you later", I shout to my mum, who is standing in the kitchen.
She peaks her head around the corner. "Wow, don't you two look spooky", she grins. "Have fun then."
With that we leave the house and make our way to the party, which is only a few blocks away.
"Boooo", Ben screams, as he jumps out of a bush we are just passing.
"Christ sake, Ben. You almost gave me a heart attack", I shout at him, almost jumping out of my own skin, when he pops up out of the bush.
"Sorry, but it is Halloween after all", he apologises, but cannot help laughing.
"Haha, very funny", I answer, truly annoyed.
"Anyway, are you guys up for some fun?" Ben looks at us, clearly expecting a yes as an answer.
"What kind of fun?" Stacey looks curious. You can always see her curiosity in her eyes, as they begin to sparkle like a trillion stars.
"Well, you guys know about this old abandoned house just around the corner, right?" he looks really excited now. "I hear it is haunted on Halloween. What do you say we go and check it out? See if the stories are true."
"Are you mad", I scowl at him.
"What's up, Kimmy? Scared? I dare you to go and check it out" he mocks me.
I hate it, when he calls me 'Kimmy'. There is only one person in this entire world, that is allowed to call me 'Kimmy' and that is my mum. And definitely not Ben. Who does he think he is? Does he think he is any better than me? Me? Scared? No way. I am going to show him that I am not scared one bit. And sure I am up for a dare!
"Yeah, you wish", I answer. "Come on then, let's go and check this creepy place out then."
"Hey, Kim, are you sure this is a good idea? Don't we just better want to go to the party?" Stacey looks worried now.
"It'll be fine, Stace", I reassure her, "Ben is just trying to scare us, that is all".
"Well then, let's go", Ben starts to lead the way.
A few moments later, the three of us are standing in front of the house. Everything is dark, the pathway, the front garden, the façade of the house and even the windows. The front garden is full of weed and wild trees and other plants. It really does look like a house from a horror movie. Slowly, we make our way up the small pathway to the house.
Now, we are standing in front of the big, black front door.
"What now?" Stacey asks with a small voice, clearly frightened.
"We ring the doorbell, stupid", Ben answers and before any of us can stop him, he rings the doorbell. The ringing is heard really loudly from inside, as if somebody is standing exactly on the other side of the door, making the ringing sound go through some loudspeakers.
All of us shudder, but nothing happens.
"What did you do that for? Who were you expecting to see? Nobody lives here, you know that?" I look at him confused and also angry, for frightening us for the second time this evening.
"Well then, let's go back. There is nothing to see here", Stacey says, turning on her heels, ready to ascend the steps and get away from this creepy house.
Ben and I decide to follow her.
Then, a creak is heard. All three of us slowly turn our heads back towards the door, staying dead in our tracks. The front door of the house is now wide open, inviting us in.
"Looks like someone is home after all", Ben looks pleased and heads back up the steps towards the door.
"Are you sure about this", now I look worried. I mean nobody has lived here for centuries. The house could collapse, as soon as we enter and bury us alive.
"We are just going to have a quick look around. Nothing is going to happen", Ben reassures us and heads into the dark hallway, Stacey and me close on his heels.
Once inside the dark hallway, the front door slams shut, causing all three of us to jump, before we are left in darkness.
Then suddenly, the lights in the hall turn on and in front of us there are three identical doors. There is not even a slight little difference visible.
"What the hell is this. Some kind of joke", I look confused.
"You must choose a door. But beware, there is only one door that will lead back out of this place. So, choose wisely", a voice is heard, but we cannot identify from where it is coming. I almost sounds as if it is the house itself speaking to us.
"And what happens if we choose the wrong door", Ben calls out.
"You will see", the voice answers and roars with laughter, before it vanishes completely.
"Now look at what you got us into again, Ben. Well done, we are going to die. I am way too young to die", Stacey starts crying and I carefully give her a hug, trying to sooth her.
"It will be fine, won't it", I look at Ben with a stern face.
"Yeah, of course it will be... We will get out of this, Stacey, don't worry", he answers, looking a little worried himself.
"Okay, so we have to figure out, which of these identical doors is the way out of here", I state, heading to the doors to inspect them.
After what feels like hours, we have inspected every little detail of all three doors. They really are completely identical.
"Okay, so there is not one thing different. All we can do now, is choose a door and hope it is the right one. On three we point at the one we think is the right one, okay", I tell them. "One... two... three!" All of us point to a door and it turns out that we are all pointing to different doors.
"Okay, so we all reckon that a different door is the way out. This is not going to help. Then we will have to decide together on which door we want to take."
We think about it for a while in silence.
"Well, have you decided yet?" the voice reappears again.
"No, we need more time", I call out pleadingly.
"Sorry, but the time is up. Choose now, or I will choose for you", the voice answers.
"Okay, guys. Then let us choose, because whoever this voice belongs to, is not going to choose the door to get out of here", I say anxiously.
"Let's take that one", Ben states and points to the one in the middle.
"Are you sure?" Stacey asks looking scared.
"No, but it is the best option we have right now", Ben continues and goes towards the middle door, Stacey and me following closely.
"Okay, let's do this together. Take my hand", he holds out his hand for me to take and I quickly grab Stacey's hand on the other side.
"On three. One... two... three", Ben shouts and pushes the door open. Carefully we step in and are welcomed by darkness, before the door slams shut again.
A few seconds later, the lights come back on again, and we are standing in the same hallway as before. Again, three identical doors are standing in front of us.
"What the...?" Ben starts and rushes to the left door, still holding my hand, dragging Stacey along with me.
Ben pushes the door open and we step through. Again darkness.
And then again light. The same hallway, the same doors.
We take the last door, the one on the right and step through.
Darkness. Light. Same hallway. Same identical doors.
"What does this mean?" I look confused.
"This means that you are trapped in here forever", the voice cackles.
