Lily and Gabe
Ding!
I sigh and groan, rolling over. I stretch my arms and legs then reach over and grab my phone. I squint my eyes at the bright phone light.
One New Text From: Gabriel
Morning Sweetheart
Smiling, I type in a reply and hit send. Then, I close my eyes again and try to go back to sleep.
Ding!
I ignore the annoying sound.
Ding!
A pillow is stuffed over my face to block out the noise.
Ding! Ding!
"URGH!"
I grab my phone again.
Four New Texts From: Gabriel
You wanna hang out today?
Lily?
Are you ignoring me?!
You better not roll back over, don't make me come over there and get you up myself ;)
I chuckle.
Make me, I text back.
No more texts will awake my sleeping body for the next twenty minutes. Or else.
I roll over one final time and snuggle up against my pillow. Soon, dreams envelope me and I am fast asleep once again.
"Lily", a voice whispers.
Someone shakes my arm.
"Lily, wake up."
"Go away", I mumble through my blankets.
"It's me, Gabriel."
I jump out of my bed and leap into his arms, throwing off my covers.
"Gabriel!!" I shriek.
He laughs and embraces me tightly.
"So, about my text. Do you want to hang out today?"
"Of course I do!" I exclaim. "Did you have anything planned?"
"Did I have anything planned?" Gabriel smirks. "You could say that."
I jump up and down like a little girl, "I'm so excited!"
Gabriel laughs and starts walking towards the door.
"I will be downstairs, get dressed", he says.
He shuts the door. After a few minutes of searching and deciding, I settle on wearing a pair of skinny jeans and a yellow tank top. I run down the stairs and into the kitchen to get some cereal, but stop dead in my tracks when I see what's in front of me.
Gabriel has set the table and made a delicious breakfast for me. There are waffles, bacon, sausage, and sliced watermelon. Orange juice has been poured into glasses and set at two places. Gabriel pulls out my chair for me and starts speaking in a funny voice.
"Welcome to breakfast. I have assembled your favourite breakfast foods for you this morning. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, they always say. So, please be seated and begin ingesting this delicious morsel."
I laugh and sit down, taking in all the food.
"How did you make all this?" I ask him.
He looks at me.
"With a stove and the food in your fridge", he replies.
I smack his arm playfully.
"No, seriously. What is all this for?"
Gabriel grins at me.
"It's all for you. This whole day has been planned out especially for you. This is just the beginning."
My eyes water up.
"You're so sweet", I say.
"Not as sweet as you, my flower. Did you know that lilies are considered the most beautiful flower in the world? No wonder you were named that."
My face heats up with blush blood.
"Oh and also, there are over 100 types of lilies. You are the only one for me though", he continues.
I look up at him and see that he is staring at me, his eyes full of love.
"You're adorable when you blush", he says.
My face heats up more.
"We should start eating", I say, trying to change the subject.
Gabriel nods. I shove a piece of waffle in my mouth.
"Mmmm", I moan.
Gabriel tries to stifle a laugh.
"Good?" he asks.
I close my eyes and nod my head.
"So good", I say, feeling the waffle melt in my mouth.
Suddenly, Gabriel stands up. I watch as he leaves the room and returns with something small clutched in his hand.
What?.... I think.
He stands behind me and puts my hair up in a ponytail.
"There", he says. "Now the syrup won't get in your hair."
I smile.
"You're so thoughtful.....but......there is no syrup..." I look around, making sure I didn't miss something.
"I've forgotten the best part!" Gabriel gasps.
He goes into the cabinet and pulls out the syrup. He uncaps the bottle and squirts some on my waffles.
"There you go. Now there is syrup."
I laugh at his goofiness and shake my head.
"Thank you", I say, taking a bite of sausage.
"You're welcome, flower."
----
After I've devoured the delicious waffles and guzzled down my orange juice, I turn to Gabriel who is sitting beside me. His back and shoulders are hunched over and his arms and legs are limp and relaxed, but I don't fall for the calm demeanor. I can see on his face the fear, anxiety, worry, and excitement. Something that he had planned today was the cause of all this stress...
I clear my throat and Gabriel stands up.
"Are you ready to go?" he asks.
I tilt my head to the side in a questioning gesture.
"Um...where are we going?"
He shakes his head, causing his chocolate locks to shake and bounce.
"It's a surprise. If I tell you, it won't be a surprise anymore", he smiles, flashing his perfect teeth. "So you'll just have to wait and see."
I curl my lips into a fake pout and sigh dramatically.
"Oh", I moan. "You know I hate surprises!"
I throw my head back pitifully and toss my hands over my face, peeking to see his reaction. His eyes flash with fear and disappointment, but then clear and his face morphs into a smirk.
"Maybe I will just tickle you then", he says. "Maybe that will make you like surprises."
"You wouldn't DARE!" I gasp.
His smirk grows.
"Oh, I would."
As he grows closer, my heart beats faster. He suddenly lunges at me and I shriek, scrambling to get away, but his hand snatches my arm. I trip and fall and he pounces on me, his fingers wiggling across my stomach. I squirm and squeal, giggles escaping my lips without my consent.
"St-stop!" I heave. "Please-please Gabriel! Stop it!"
He laughs and gets off of me, then leans down to offer his hand. I grab it and he pulls me to my feet. I turn to go upstairs, but he grips my hand tighter and yanks, spinning me into his chest. My free hand grasps his shirt and my knees buckle. He catches me and gazes into my eyes. I keep my eyes on his and let my body go limp, trusting that he won't let me fall. His strong arms lift me to my feet, but I keep my palm planted on his broad chest. Moments pass and we just stare into each other's eyes, loving and content. Then, he leans down and kisses me. His soft lips meet mine and electricity surges through me. Even after 3 years of those kisses, they still make my head light and giddy. He breaks the kiss and places his forehead gently on mine.
"Now do you like surprises?"
I laugh and nod.
"Good", he smiles. "Now go finish getting ready, my flower, we have places to be!"
I turn and trot up the carpeted stairs and into my room. I slip into the bathroom and brush my teeth and hair, then apply a small amount of makeup. When I'm finished, I look in the mirror and decide I look good enough. I turn out the light, and head back down to where Gabriel is waiting.
"Lily...you look beautiful", he says, his eyes sparkling.
"What do you mean? I didn't do anything special?"
He shakes his head.
"You don't have to do anything special, Lily. You always look beautiful. When you just wake up and your hair is frizzy and your face is red from the pillow, you look beautiful. When you are focused on a book, and your face is scrunched up in concentration, you look beautiful. When you dress up nice and you put on makeup, you look beautiful. Everything you do is beautiful and you make everything look beautiful."
My face heats up and suddenly the design of the wall seems very interesting.
"Erm....well....thanks?"
He chuckles and nods his head towards the door.
"Your jacket m'lady?"
Now I chuckle, and I take my jacket from his outstretched hand. He wraps his arm around my waist and leads me outside into the warm sun.
"We have a whole day of fun and excitement ahead of us", he whispers. "It's all for you. I love you so much."
