Heartache
She never saw him again, save for the rare times they passed each other in the hallway. And they never spoke again, not even then.
Even when she did see him, he was usually alone. Though this was true, he didn't look unhappy. He looked content, more so than she had ever seen him before.
This time when she saw him, her heart was not prepared for the shock of seeing him with someone else. The way he looked at the girl was familiar, because once he had looked at her like that. She saw their fingers intertwined, as so often theirs had been once. She heard his laughter ringing out, louder and clearer than she'd ever heard it before.
Part of her was happy for him, happy he had moved on, and happy he was happy. But part of her was not ready for the unexpected sadness that hit her in a wave at the sight of him with another girl.
She tried to hide her pain, but for a moment, a look crossed her face that gave it away. It's a good thing he wasn't looking; he was too busy with the new girl. Anger and embarrassment flushed her cheeks and sadness caused pools of starlight to fill her eyes. She continued to walk, attempting to push down her misery with deep breaths.
But breathing doesn't lessen the blow of heartache.
