"My love," he murmured sadly into her hair. "Why?"

She felt a hot tear soak into her hair. Her mind was buzzing and numb, and her heart beat wildly in her chest. His arms were wrapped tightly around her, almost as if he was trying to love all her broken pieces back together in a single desperate action.

Her legs trembled violently and her breaths were shaky and terrified. "I'm sorry," she managed to whisper.

Car horns and engines roared below them, filling the night air with a squalor similar to the chaos in her mind. Sniffles joined the city sounds.

"Don't apologize," he whimpered. "I'm sorry for not being here sooner. I'm sorry for letting you think you were alone when you're not. I'm always here for you. Always."

"I'm still sorry for scaring you."

His whole body shook. "Just don't ever do that again. I can't lose you."

Finally the shock began to wear off and sobs erupted from her body. Tears streamed down her cheeks, increasing the tears coming from his eyes as well. He squeezed her harder and she squeezed back, clinging onto him for dear life - the very life she had just tried to throw away.
