11. Vampire Prompt (Black Heart characters)

He twisted and turned inside his wooden casket as his mind thought back to a live long since past. His eyes flicked as a bright glow seeped from his iris, the colour changed from dark grey to red and then back to grey. The more he dreamed the more he moved, unable to sleep soundly while battling his dark inner turmoil.

"No! No!" His voice muffled by the wooded coffin his young teenaged body lay inside, "don't stake him!"

In his mind he could see a space he once knew, the basement of an old Victorian terraced property, a building from his past. The coffin of his father, Count Wolfgang, lay in the room, lid closed as the 600-year-old Vampire slept the daylight hours away.

It was if Jack was there in the flesh, watching the scenes unfolding in front of him.

The eerie sound of footsteps crept down the stairs to the basement. Steps squeaked as if the wood cried under the persons weight. He watched. Waited. He'd been there before, seen a scene like this before, but this wasn't reality, but a dream, or more precisely, a nightmare.

A shadow made its way down the stairs. As the dim light of a candle glowed the clearer the persons face became. Their cold white fingers were clasped around a visible piece of wood. It's handle perfectly formed and lined with bronze detail and the danger zone, sharp and painful, perfect for doing the job the person had in mind. Slowly and carefully, they moved towards Count Wolfgang's coffin. With their free hand, they gradually began to lift the lid.

Count Wolfgang lay still. His dark eyes tightly closed and his hands crossed over his chest. He didn't breath. Didn't move. Just stayed there. The perfect target.

Their hand reached towards the hood that covered their identity, and slipped it down over the head. The girls long black hair flowed freely down her back. Her blue-grey eyes glared at the Count.

"No!" Jack shouted. A sharp knock sounded as his head hit the inside lid of his coffin.

That wasn't a dream. That was a horrific nightmare, but all the boy wondered was if that was all it was?
