Forbidden Fruits
Legend tells of a sacred tree:
Tall, green, vibrant, and lush
And of the succulent fruit
That hangs from its highest branch.
Always seemingly out of reach
Is the fruit, they say, of success.
And many come to try for success.
Some try to climb the tree,
While others simply reach
into the green and lush
boughs and limbs to the branch
Where hangs the ripened fruit.
I am reminded of Tantalus and his fruit
And how it was that his success
was nigh impossible, he couldn't grasp the branch
of his salvation from that tree
and quell his hunger with the lush
fruit always just out of reach
And I recall how easy it was for Eve to reach
that sweet, juicy, fruit.
Nectar on the tongue, the reason for its lush
bright skin was sin, but also I think success
And I pity the tree,
for no one now can touch that branch
But there is another branch
that people wish to reach;
high up into a single tree
and pluck from its bough a fruit
That should give them success
Oh it would be precious and lush!
I yearn for that supple and lush
ambrosia from the branch!
Why is it that success
is never within reach?
I long so much for that fruit
from that legendary tree
Tantalizing and lush, always appearing within reach,
Dangling from that branch is the true forbidden fruit.
Truly I know that success will not fall far from its tree.
