Evening Waltz

Revali leaned against the cool stone wall of Hyrule Castle's Sanctum, away from the crowd of people huddled together on the dance floor, dancing senselessly about to whatever song the musicians were playing at that moment.

The five Champions of Hyrule had been summoned to Hyrule Castle by King Rhoam for the celebration of his daughter's 17th birthday, though the Princess's actual date of birth wasn't for another few weeks.

The rest of the guests that were in attendance were mainly diplomats and those in leadership positions in the various settlements scattered across Hyrule, as well as some Hylians from the surrounding villages near the castle.

Link and Zelda were among the crowd dancing swiftly to the beat, looking positively as content as could be, with Zelda in her royal gown swishing around and Link in his Champion's Tunic crafted by Zelda herself.

Their right hands were clasped together, while Zelda had her left hand on Link's shoulder, and Link had his on her waist, holding her close to him with each turn.

Urbosa and Daruk were standing near the refreshments having what appeared to be a drink in Zelda's honor, though judging by the empty glasses beside them, it had been more than one.

Revali then shifted his gaze to Mipha, where she was also standing alone, and while he didn't pin Mipha as a social butterfly, he couldn't help but feel sorry about the painful awkwardness she must have been going through at that moment.

Seeing Link, someone she had said was the love of her life, dancing with someone else, that person being their own Princess of Hyrule must have been awful for her to see no matter how many times she had said she was alright with Link and Zelda being together.

Revali walked closer to Mipha, careful not to be noticed by Urbosa or Daruk, though they seemed to pay him nor Mipha no mind.

Mipha looked over to see Revali standing beside her, though he seemed quite determined to not make eye contact with her despite the fact he had obviously moved closer towards her for whatever reason.

"Revali? Is everything okay?"

Her voice full of concern almost made Revali shiver, even with something as simple as a question as what she had just asked making his heart skip a beat.

Of course, he couldn't say how he had felt sorry for her seeing her lost love dancing with another, or that the sound of her voice was enough to make him melt into a pile of goo.

He finally dared to make eye contact with her, her amber-colored eyes looking at him with such concern, and Revali could have sworn that he could stare into those eyes forever and never tire of the sight.

"I am fine, Princess." He said simply, and Mipha smiled sweetly at him with a small giggle, one that could only be heard by Revali, as if it was a secret shared only between them.

"I am not a Princess tonight, I am simply the Champion of the Zora, as well as a guest of our Princess Zelda. It is her birthday celebration, after all."

Revali smiled at her comment, though he didn't expect any other response from her. Mipha did hold the utmost respect for Zelda, as they all did, even himself.

"Alright then, Mipha, if you are merely a guest tonight, then don't you think you should be dancing like the rest of them that are here?" He asked, and Mipha thought for a moment, slowly nodding in agreement.

"I suppose you are right, but who would I dance with is the question." She pondered, causing Revali to sigh as the hidden meaning behind his words did not quite land. He supposed he would have to be more direct.

"Well, you could dance with me, if you would like to."

Mipha froze, caught off guard by Revali's proposition, but yet, nowhere in her mind did she want to say no.

She then looked up to see him smiling at her kindly, something she didn't see him do very often. Though she hadn't seen him get any alcohol that night, Mipha couldn't help but think Revali was slightly drunk as he was acting so differently from his normal self.

Revali wished he had been at least slightly tipsy so he would be able to somewhat quiet the turmoil in his racing mind.

"I would love to."

Mipha's smile had returned when Revali looked back at her after she had spoken, though it made him feel more confident as he held out his hand to her.

"Shall we?" He asked, and Mipha nodded as she placed her hand in his own, the feathers covering his wing soft on her hand as Revali clasped it, leading her out onto the dance floor.

Urbosa and Daruk looked over to see Mipha and Revali walking together onto the dance floor hand in hand, the bright blue of their Champion clothing standing out quite obviously from the rather muted attire worn by the rest of the crowd.

However, even if it had been them as ordinary people at an event, a Zora and a Rito dancing together would have been sure to turn heads.

Zelda and Link looked away from one another for a moment and they both stopped in surprise as Mipha and Revali walked past them, though neither of them paid any attention to anyone else besides each other.

The musicians noticed the two Champions walking together onto the dance floor, and immediately ended the piece they were currently playing as subtly as they could before starting a more slow-paced song.

"Here, place your hand on my waist," Mipha directed, Revali nodding hesitantly as he carefully did as she said, her skin smooth to the touch as he rested his hand against her waist.

Mipha then placed her hand on his shoulder and began to lead the both of them into the dance amongst the others already falling into step with the new song being played.

Everyone soon returned to their dancing, including Link and Zelda as Mipha spotted Daruk and Urbosa both finally striding out into the main area of the Sanctum, joining in with the others.

She turned back to look at Revali, who hadn't noticed her distraction by the others as he had taken the lead now, his wing around her making her feel...well, she supposed 'protected' would be appropriate in that moment.

"Have you ever danced with anyone before?" Mipha asked, looking up into Revali's eyes, him slowly shaking his head in response.

"I have danced before, but mainly for performances at festivals back in Rito Village, though those are usually more lively than how we are dancing now." He said, and Mipha laughed.

"Is it bad that this is more slow-paced?" She asked, and Revali smiled softly at her, as they both swayed together.

"No, I'm enjoying myself very much with you." He murmured, and Mipha smiled back at him, shifting closer towards him as the song slowed down slightly, barely noticeable but allowed the two to sway more to the beat than actually dancing.

"I'm enjoying myself with you as well. Thank you for inviting me to dance." She said softly, leaning her head against Revali's chest, the cool metal of his armor doing very little to cool down her very warm face.

She didn't mind though, as she held onto his hand more tightly and felt him gently pull her only a little closer.

Revali felt as if his heart would leap out of his chest as he continued to lead the both of them along, the music seemingly going softer as he did so, and as he looked around more people seemed to be relaxing into their partner's arms, much as Mipha was doing.

"Of course. This is quite nice." He said, resting his chin atop her head as best he could.

He supposed it'd make sense that people would be more holding each other than actual dancing, given that it was late and almost every person on the dance floor was drunk or tired, or both.

Urbosa and Daruk passed by them on the dance floor, and they both could see Mipha's face was red even as she pressed her face against Revali's chest, and Revali's feathers around his cheeks were prickled as he held Mipha close.

"They seem to be having fun, huh?" Urbosa whispered, Daruk nodding in agreement as they moved closer towards where Zelda and Link were located, and while Zelda still had an image to uphold as Princess of Hyrule, her and Link were holding each other just as tightly.

Zelda heard the familiar click of Urbosa's heels against the tile floor and looked up from Link's shoulder to see Daruk and Urbosa dancing next to them.

"Urbosa, Daruk! I didn't expect to see you two on the dance floor at all tonight!" Zelda said, and Urbosa held a finger to her lips as she pointed across the Sanctum.

"This isn't the only surprising thing tonight, Little Bird." She said with a smile, and Zelda followed to where the Gerudo was pointing to see Mipha and Revali together, holding each other close like there was no tomorrow.

Zelda gasped, and even Link had a surprised expression upon his face as they both turned to see the two Champions embracing one another, barely moving to the music, though neither seemed to mind.

"I don't believe it. Is that actually happening?" Daruk asked, and Urbosa nodded.

"It seems they've both finally made progress with one another. We should give them some privacy. No staring, from any of you." Urbosa said firmly, and everyone nodded in agreement, before slowly moving away from each other once again.

Mipha looked up from where she had been staring into Revali's chest, hearing a low hum following along with the melody of the music from just above her, the sound enough to make her heart flutter even with how soft it was.

"Revali, are you humming?" Mipha whispered, and Revali froze for a moment, but nodded slowly in response.

"I am. Do you like my humming, Princess?" He asked, and Mipha smiled.

"I do, it sounds quite lovely. Are you secretly also a musician as well as an archer?" She asked with a joking smile, causing Revali to laugh and shake his head.

"No, I am considered an average singer at best and I wouldn't be able to play an instrument to save my life, but I suppose to any other race I would be considered good at singing. Are you experienced with music at all, Princess?"

Mipha thought for a moment before nodding, remembering all the times she sang for Sidon back home at Zora's Domain.

"I sing lullabies to Sidon every night I am home, it's the only way he'll fall asleep. I also can play a little bit of piano." She said with a slight laugh, though that was a lie as she was quite experienced with playing the piano, not that he knew that.

Revali had a faint memory of hearing a mysterious pianist when he had visited Zora's Domain for the first time, but decided not to pry.

"Perhaps you'll allow me to hear your singing sometime. I'm sure you sound absolutely beautiful." He whispered, causing Mipha to shudder at the sound of his voice as she felt a strange feeling in her chest.

She took a deep breath in an attempt to calm down, but to little avail as her face began to heat up again.

"Only if you'll allow me to hear you sing." She teased, causing Revali to chuckle.

"You drive a hard bargain. It's a deal."

He then pressed his forehead against hers, his eyes closed and a small smile on his face.

Mipha closed her eyes as well as she placed her hand against Revali's cheek, the two of them having stopped dancing altogether as the music seemed to fade away, along with everyone dancing around them until it was just them holding one another.

Revali went to speak but hesitated for a moment as he thought about what to say.

"Mipha, I am so glad you are here with me." He said softly, and Mipha smiled as she wrapped both her arms around Revali's neck, Revali taking the opportunity to wrap both his wings around her waist, holding her as close as he could to him.

"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but here in your arms at this very moment." She murmured, causing Revali's heart to race as she looked back up at him, her eyes filled with such warmth.

Mipha then separated from him for a moment, pressing her lips against the front of Revali's beak, wiping away the small smudge of lipstick as she smiled so sweetly at him, he felt as if he was going to melt.

"Ahem."

The two were then suddenly brought back to reality, with Urbosa, Daruk, Link, and Zelda all staring at them with bewildered expressions on their faces.

Urbosa smirked, placing a hand on her hip as she chuckled.

"Did you two have a fun time?" She asked, and Mipha and Revali immediately stepped away from each other, the both of them quite flustered.

"Yes, it was fine," Revali said with a cough, Mipha too embarrassed to say anything in response to Urbosa's question.

"You two sure seem to be more than just fine. However, I think the celebration is over." Urbosa said, gesturing to where King Rhoam was standing in front of his throne, though he seemed to be adamantly not looking at the six of them.

"Thank you all for coming today to celebrate the birth of my daughter and our Princess, Zelda! She is my most precious daughter, and I have the utmost faith that she will lead us to victory against Calamity Ganon! May the Goddess smile upon us all, and may we all march on to victory!" The King proclaimed, spreading his arms wide as he spoke, everyone in the room cheering at his small speech.

Zelda looked down at her hands, a sad look upon her face, causing everyone to glance over at her in worry.

"He failed to mention how I have not yet awakened my sealing power. How will I stop anything if I can't use the power of the Goddess?"

Tears began to well up in her eyes as Urbosa pulled her into a hug, patting her back in a comforting manner.

"You need not worry about anything tonight, Little Bird. This is a celebration of you being born, not about whether or not you can use your sealing power. I believe we've all had enough excitement for tonight. Link, will you escort Zelda back to her quarters?" Urbosa asked, and Link nodded as he took ahold of the Princess's hand and led her away.

"I should be leaving as well, but it was nice to see all of you tonight. I hope that we'll see each other again soon." Mipha said, and Urbosa and Daruk smiled.

"Of course. Please be safe in your travels. I shall retire for the night, farewell." Urbosa said as she went in the direction of where Link and Zelda had gone.

"I should get going too, the Gorons will be needing me. Good night, you two!" Daruk said, leaving the Sanctum and Mipha and Revali alone.

Revali looked down at Mipha, who grinned at him in response, which still served to make his heart swell.

"I'll escort you down to the entrance of the Castle if you would like me to, Princess," Revali said finally after a moment of silence, and Mipha nodded in acceptance.

"Thank you, Revali. Shall we be on our way?"

Revali nodded, holding his hand out to her once again, which she almost immediately took as they both left the Sanctum after a night well spent, the both of them hopeful for the future as they walked out into the night together hand in hand.

At that moment, everything was right. Everything was perfect.
