Chapter 6

Jason was almost impressed by the way Holly spoke calmly as if they were the ones being interrogated.
"Giles! Am I done. You already have a detailed record of my history," she taunted the sherif with a half smile.
Ah! That smile which had driven him crazy the first time they'd met.
"Detective!" Holly's sharp voice brought me back from the happy memories. Oh, so we're still pretending to be strangers. Huh!
"Thank you miss Fairchild for your time. We'll get back to you if we have any more questions." Jason replied with a sully monotone.
But no! Holly was far from done. "Walker let's cut the crap, shall we. We all know that I have alibi as I was half way across the country living the perfect life. Also we all know that it was de used once she reached sixteen I would get her legal guardianship and inheritance so it couldn't have been for money. On top of all that I...I loved her. She was my only fam..family." Her sardonic voice had taken a broken tone. Her eyes were glistening and Jason's hurt was lurching for her. He felt horrible for doing this and the Sheriff too as the old man sat beside her and she leapt into his arms. A large reason for her childhood nuisance had been for the want of attention and the Sheriff had given her that. In a sense, he was the closest she'd had for a father and he for a daughter.
"Shhh. Holls, we promise that we'll find the bastard who did this." Giles was trying to soothe her. " And as for family we all are here for you. Even Matt is coming next week. He heard about the loss and it pains him too. After all, you both were joint by the hip."
At Jason's inquisitive haze he clarified, "My son. They were close friends. It's a small town after all..."

Jason say with an unlit cigar in his hand.
'Mary J Fairchild was the model child wasn't she. Amazing grades, cheerleader, beauty pageant queen, volunteered at church on weekends. She didn't have a single mean bone in her body.
Keeping the cigar on the table he picked up a picture of her. She was blindingly pretty with strawberry blonde hair, ivory skin, rosy tinged cheeks and an athletic figure with all her curves in the right places. The girl look seraphic and she was perfect. Too perfect. Hmmm...
A sharp knock on the door roused Jason from his train of thought as he pinned the photo on his chart and covered it. Opening the door he found another person who looked perfect but was far from it. Holly K Fairchild stood on his hotel room door with a beautiful wine halter dress and a mischievous look ok her face.
Moving inside she said, "What a surprise to find out that we're staying the same hotel.
"Well it is the only one darlin'."
"Well I hope you have dinner ready Jason. Today has been terribly taxing."
"Well anything for you, wifey!"
