Fionn had been gone for a while now. He was away doing interview after interview and Dotty felt quite alone. She had gone from months of Fionn by her side tending to her when she couldn't do it herself to now, her parents both busy (both completing interviews around the world) and Fionn not even being in the country. To say it felt unfamiliar would be an understatement.
She spoke to Tom regularly, every day in fact, and the Funkirk group chat was alive and kicking day in day out, it was still such as shame that Harry still remained whatsappless. She was immensely proud of everyone and what they had achieved in the months following the release of Dunkirk and the reviews they were gaining were incredible as well. All of the hard work, sweat, fake sweat and bacon and cheese wraps paid off!
Dotty usually spent her days writing and editing her books, leaving the house to go on a long walk once a day before returning home and settling down for the evening either by reading a book, watching a movie or playing video games. Was this what living alone truly felt like?
Today was different, however, she woke up early, showered, washed her hair, dried and straightened it, she dressed in a smart shirt with a black ribbon tied in a bow around the collar, a black skater skirt and some ballet pump shoes. On her shoulder was a rucksack filled with everything she needed as she took the car and drove into Central London. Finding the right building, she approached the desk, was greeted by a kind lady who handed her a visitors pass and directed her to the office where her interview would be taking place.
Inside the office was a stout man with a potbelly and a friendly smile. He had a small white tufty beard and piercing blue eyes like that of the Mediterranean sea. He wore a rich navy blue suit with a sterling silver tie and on his desk sat a leather folder a black fountain pen resting beside it,
"Miss Nolan, a pleasure to see you." He greeted extending out his hand which she shook with a small smile, trying to contain her nerves but apparently he saw right through her. "No need to be nervous, I'm just a regular guy, call me Alex, Mr Nelson is too formal. May I call you Dorothy?"
Dotty nodded her head, "Or Dotty, I don't mind."
"Dotty it is then. Well then Dotty, please, take a seat." Dotty slipped her rucksack off of her shoulder and laid it gently at her feet before flattening down her skirt and sitting opposite the man who leaned back in his seat. He opened p the leather folder and slipped out the stack of paper that had red pen scribbled all over it. "What can I say? I fell in love with your words. I read many a manuscript each week and by jove did I come across some empty oysters before finding this pearl. I was growing tired by the time I even printed your exert out but within the first paragraph my mind and body alike were alive and sleep was far behind me. Your way with words is magnificent and well crafted that I wish I had the whole manuscript to read in that very moment. Alas, when you sent the rest over I put everything else aside and read it in a matter of hours. My dear, you a sorcerous in the world of books!"
She was astonished, never in her life did she ever think she would be sat in front of a literary agent being given so much praise at once. It was unimaginable. "Thank you so much," she beamed but composed herself quickly.
"Oh, Dotty it's my pleasure. Tell me, do you have a writer in the family?"
"My father writes many movie scripts that he then goes on to direct."
Alex Nelson's mouth dropped and his eyes lit like a piece of wood after some flint had sparked near it. "Are you telling me that your father is Christopher Nolan?" Dotty nodded her head. "My, oh, my! I just watched Dunkirk at the cinema last night with my two sons, oh it was phenomenal! No wonder you have such a talent! It runs through your veins. Dearie me, I am on a swift tangent, back to business. I would love to represent you. Your work will be a hit, a best seller and I would love to take you there."
Dotty was grinning from ear-to-ear at the offer and could not turn it down. She and Alex Nelson spoke terms and conditions, money and contracts and within an hour Dotty was signed to his literary agency and her work was ready to be sent to prospectus publishers. She left the building with her head held high and a smile that seemed endless. It felt as if she was a character in a movie and was so tempted to greet everyone around her, but with that being said, it was London and there were many reasons why talking to strangers was not a good idea. As soon as she got home she ordered some food and put on some music and began to celebrate her achievement, albeit by herself but it was still enjoyable nonetheless.
All her dreams seem to be coming true, let's just hope it continues to go that way.
