Hours went by and the doctors worked tirelessly to mend Dotty's heart and give her the chance to live the rest of her life. Her heart had stopped three times and each time it was growing progressively harder to get it started again. Blood paints their cover ups and their gloves, sweat beads on their foreheads and the sound of the monitors ring in their ears. It was a painfully slow and difficult process of which even the doctors began to give up hope— except one— Doctor Cody. He persevered and wouldn't let anyone even mutter any doubt. He pressed on about how much Dotty needed to be saved and that he wouldn't hear of anything different.
"Zach," Said another Doctor (Dr. Woodson), "you're getting tired, this next parts the most crucial and risky, are you sure you can do it? I'd be okay to take over if you aren't."
"I'm fine," Doctor Cody returned, holding his hand out, "scalpel."
Doctor Woodson sighed and nodded his head, keeping his clamps on Dotty's chest to keep it open. Doctor Cody continued with the operation, his breathing low and his eyes flaring with concentration like a fire trailing along a line in order to reach its victim. The victim being the problem that had caused Dotty all of her issues.
Another hour dragged on by and finally the last stitches were being sewn and a breath of relief escaped all of the doctor's lips. The blood was cleaned off and it wasn't long until the porters came in to wheel Dotty's unconscious body out of the operating theatre and onto a ward. Doctor Cody and Doctor Woodson were very happy to remove their cover ups and clean themselves up. The former more hurriedly as he wanted to talk to Chris and Emma as soon as he could.
"How is she?" Chris asked before Dr Cody could even stop fully.
"We lost her three times but we managed to get her back. The operations was gruelling and my most difficult one of yet but it was a success. You have a wonderful and strong daughter Mr Nolan."
Chris and Emma smiled happily, "thank you Doctor," the former shook his hands, "you are one remarkable man."
"I was only doing my job, Mrs Nolan." The Doctor scratched the back of her neck. "Dotty should wake within the hour, she'll have to stay in the hospital for a little while longer but rest assured your daughter is not going anywhere anytime soon."
Tom, Harry and Jack all crowded around Fionn who burst into tears, his emotions had gotten the better of him and he could no longer keep them hidden. The three hugged him close, all muttering how good it is. How Dotty is okay. That she will no longer be ill. Fionn clutched onto Harry's shirt tightly, his head in Jack's chest and his other hand holding Tom's. He was more than grateful that Dotty was going to be perfectly fine, but the thought of losing her was still burrowed deep inside of his head and he could rip it out and throw it away.
"Can we see her?" Asked Chris who held his wife in his arms, the pair both in ecstasy.
"Of course. Normally there would be a limit of the amount of persons allowed in at a time but I can see that the group of you are in desperate need to see Dorothy, so I'll allow you all in at one time."
"Thank you Doctor."
The three guys helped Fionn up and Emma reached out to take his hand. He shakily took it, sniffing and wiping his eyes and they all entered the hospital room where Dotty laid soundlessly on the bed connected to the monitors to see her heart beat which was finally back to beating regularly and her blood pressure was normal once again. Fionn grasped his girlfriend's hand and raised it to his lips kissing her warm skin, letting his lips linger there. The last time he held her she was cold, she had no heartbeat and had no breath, no it was the opposite and he had never felt so relieved.
"She looks so healthy," Said Jack, "And that's all down to one operation. The NHS is a wonderful thing."
"Doctor Cody is a wonderful man," added Tom.
The room fell silent and the group simply stared at Dotty as her eyes began to move and flutter open, her face confronting into a mix of confusion and fear. "Hello, sweetheart," Emma soothes brushing back her hair gently, "you've just had an operation and are in hospital."
"What?" Dotty croaked not even processing anything around her except her mother's voice.
"Doctor Cody fixed your heart, darling, you're all better."
"I am? He did?"
"He really did, Dotty, you're going to get at least sixty to seventy more years from your heart."
Dotty was speechless, her eyes smoothing over her mother's face and locking into Fionn who sat beside her bed with her father behind him. "Fionn?"
"Hey you," he said softly, his voice still dripping with tears like a sugared coating making it sweet yet melancholy.
"Don't cry," Said Dotty who slowly raised her hand to wipe away the tears that had run down his cheeks. Fionn nuzzled his cheek into her touch as she held him like he was the world.
"He's been ever so worried, Dot, we all have. Everyone else are on the edge of their seats back at your house waiting for news on your operation. But trust me, hun, this is happy tears," Harry said making himself and the other two known to the young woman.
Dotty smiled gently at the three and turned back to her parents, "I love you all but could you wait outside for a little while. I need to talk to Fionn alone. Please?" Chris wanted to object, he didn't really what to leave his daughter just yet but from the pleading glint in her eyes he nodded and the five exited the room. "Oi, Fionnly, I love you."
Fionn couldn't help but chuckled at Dotty's tired forwardness, "I love you too, love. You really scared me. I couldn't lose you."
"And you're not going to. Not anymore. Dotty pushes herself up but was still weak from the anaesthetic that she was given during the operation so Fionn had to help her. He went to pull his arms away from where he had wrapped them around her waist but she wouldn't let him. "Not so fast, tiger, I want cuddles."
"Wow you're out of an operation for nearly an hour and you're already demanding cuddles!"
"Duh, you're my teddy bear. And I'm sleepy so I need a teddy bear to cuddle." She peppered his neck with kisses. "I love you
"So you've said."
"No Fionn, I don't think you get it. I'm in love with you. With every part of my body. Nobody has ever made me feel this trying towards them and the sheer thought that I nearly died really brought that out. I can't explain how much you mean to me."
"I think I already know."
"How?"
"Because I'm absolutely mad about you Dorothy Nolan."
