4. lovers & liars

Hoseok was someone who never dwelled on the past.

He was relaxed, lighthearted, dare he say, a free spirit. If he ever made any mistakes, he'd brush over them. Sure, his mistakes would cost him— maybe he'd get a slap on the wrist, or two, depending on how bad the situation was. But overall, Hoseok could move past it all, all of his mistakes becoming lost in the wind as Hoseok moved on to the next obstacle in his life.

This time though, his mistake was going to cost him.

He should have known that his parents had something up their sleeves. For someone that prided himself in being naturally intelligent, Hoseok had been blind to see that this deal that his parents had wanted to strike with someone as inconsiderable as the Mins was because of him.

Hoseok wanted to scream, to leave destruction in his wake, to make his parents regret even coming up with the idea of this stupid proposal. He wanted to throw himself because he'd been far too lenient with Yoongi and his family. He should have made it harder for them to win his parents ever. He should have made it especially impossible for Yoongi to look appealing enough that his parents would want Hoseok to marry him.

"Sweetie, don't be mad at us."

Hoseok ate his lunch in silence, making sure to keep the glare on his face. His parents say in front of him, saddened expressions on their faces. They'd been kind enough to let Hoseok stay home for the day, considering that Hoseok had gone to sleep enraged. The last thing Hoseok wanted to do was to see Yoongi, the one that his parents had said would be his future husband.

"You know we're only trying to find you someone for you," his mother said, sighing. "I'm sorry we didn't tell you at first. We thought you would get angry at us and see, you are angry."

If it were anyone else, Hoseok would have been fine. Sure, he would have gotten upset, but he wouldn't be furious. But, the guy that Hoseok's parents had set him up with wasn't just anyone. It was Yoongi fucking Min, the one guy that Hoseok loathed with all his heart.

"I understand that he's the one that gives you detention, but this is better for us," his mother continued. "You saw Yoongi. He's so pretty. You two would look perfect together. Not to mention this would bring more money for us. Come on, Hoseok, you knew this day would come eventually."

That was true. Hoseok knew that one day his parents would marry him off. It had always been their intention— the only way for the Jungs to accumulate more wealth. It had happened to his parents, which had also happened to their parents before that. To accumulate wealth meant to marry off to secure more wealth, just as much as it was not to have a failing business. Hoseok knew there many families that wanted to join the Jungs, but unfortunately for them, the sole heir of the Jung wealth, he refused to marry just anyone.

More specifically, he refused to marry a woman.

When Hoseok had first come out as gay, his parents were devastated. Any company they had been setting their eye on was out of the question, given that the heirs to those companies were females. As much as his parents hated the idea of missing out on partnerships, they still wanted to ensure that whoever their son's future partner would be would be someone he could fall in love with.

Solidified bond through marriage, and get a chance to fall in love, all while gaining more money.

It was a win win situation.

Just not for Hoseok.

"I'll never fall in love with Yoongi," Hoseok snapped. "That boy has done nothing but fuck my freedoms up. He's given me detention, and you haven't seen how self conceited he actually is. Yoongi's such a brat. He thinks he's all that just because of his hard work."

"Yoongi's ambitious," Hoseok's father corrected. "It is a good trait to have. Yoongi knows his self worth. Hoseok, he's perfect for someone like you."

"I'll be lucky if I ever see the light of day with him," Hoseok muttered. "I can't believe you're making me do this. Can't it be someone else? There are so many eligible bachelor's out there."

"Hoseok, I'm not marrying you to someone who isn't near your age," Hoseok's mother responded. "The next available bachelor is twenty five. I'm not doing that to you. Yoongi is perfect for you."

Yes, Yoongi Min, a stuck up, controlling, ruiner of fun man, was perfect for someone like Hoseok. Hoseok shook his head, pushing his food away. The fact that his parents were discussing Hoseok marrying as if it was something as simple as the weather angered Hoseok even more. They weren't even trying to see his side of things.

Man, money made people into the uglier versions of themselves.

Why did it have to be Yoongi?

"There's nothing you can do about it, Hoseok," his mother sighed. "We've already notified Yoongi's parents. Now that you're done eating, we're going to pick Yoongi up from school, and we're going to meet up with his parents."

"Now?!"

"Yes," Hoseok's mother nodded. "You didn't think we'd let you stay out of school if we weren't planning on taking out early now, did you?"

Of course, they had something up their sleeve, Hoseok thought bitterly to himself. Hoseok should have known.

The Devil worked hard, but those hungry for money worked harder.

"Yoongi's parents will be expecting us soon," his father said, standing. "Come on. We have to pick up Yoongi."

Hoseok grimaced. "Do I have to?"

He received dirty looks.

"Fine."

Brusquely standing up, Hoseok marched out of the dining room while his parents followed behind him, grateful that Hoseok hadn't done anything too rash.

Though that didn't mean that Hoseok wouldn't.

For the first time in Yoongi's promising high school career, filled with medals and a variety of honors, including but not limited to team trophies, honor roll, and perfect attendance, he was terrified about stepping foot in the place he should be most comfortable.

And it all had to do with Hoseok flipping Jung.

"Hey, are you okay?" Minseo asked, looking at Yoongi with concern. "You've been acting strange all morning."

Yoongi forced a smile onto his face, turning to look at Minseo, though his mind was elsewhere.

"Everything's fine," Yoongi reassured, tucking Minseo's hair behind her ear. "I'm just a bit worried about how yesterday's dinner went."

Minseo nodded in understanding. "Did it go well?"

It had gone well, a little too well from Yoongi's point of view. Perhaps it was that he was expecting Hoseok to sabotage Yoongi and his family and set Yoongi up for failure, but, overall, the dinner had gone pretty smoothly. No, what had happened overall wasn't what was concerning Yoongi. What was bothering Yoongi the most was the last words Hoseok had told him.

Glad to hear Minseo's back on the market, though.

Per his parents' request, Yoongi had willingly lied to the Jungs. He'd seen how Hoseok had reacted and felt true fear that second that Hoseok had choked on his drink. But, Hoseok had played along with Yoongi's antics, and now, Yoongi had been trying to find Hoseok all day long so he could try to clear the air.

He couldn't tell Minseo that he'd lied about her being his girlfriend. She wouldn't understand why Yoongi would lie about something like that, even if it had been for his parents. To pretend that you weren't in a relationship with someone, you were in a relationship, well, it wasn't a sign of trust. It could give Minseo the wrong impression, and the last thing Yoongi wanted was for Minseo to behave irrationally in his decisions.

Was Hoseok interested in Minseo? No, that couldn't be; Hoseok's parents mentioned that Hoseok was gay. Maybe his other friends were? Frankly, Yoongi didn't know who Hoseok surrounded himself with, other than Jungkook, but as far as he knew, Jungkook had never shown any interest in Minseo. They were more of rivals, being each other's competition so that it couldn't be Jungkook.

Did Hoseok have more friends than Jungkook?

"Well, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about," Minseo smiled, lacing her hands with Yoongi's. "Everything's going to go well. Don't worry."

"Oh, you know how much of a worrier Yoongi is, Seo."

Yoongi rolled his eyes, recognizing Seokjin Kim's voice from afar. Seokjin grinned at them, sitting at the next available seat. Minseo smiled kindly at him, politely greeting him.

"Shouldn't you be sitting with the rest of the juniors?" Yoongi remarked. Seokjin scoffed.

"Watch it, Yoongi; I'm still older than you," Seokjin retorted, crossing his arms. "If you were as talented and immersed as me, you would be in my situation, but no. We could have gone abroad together!"

Yoongi made a face. "That's the last thing I wanted to do with you."

Seokjin had taken a year off from school to go abroad. Though Seokijn didn't go into exact details, Yoongi knew that Seokjin had wanted them to go together. As someone who didn't want to ruin his chances of graduating with the current class, Yoongi had declined. There would be plenty of times to study abroad later. He could do that in college.

Before Seokjin had left to go abroad, he had been known as the school's ''It-Boy' fitting seamlessly with Minseo. Everyone had thought that they were going to be the ones to end up together, and Yoongi could see why. They fit each other well, like puzzle pieces of the high school clique puzzle. They probably would have, too, if Seokjin hadn't left to study abroad. Now, though, Seokjin was stuck as an eleventh grader (though he was already making appeals to graduate with his former class).

"I learned so much, though," Seokjin sighed dramatically. "And the girls were amazing too. Of course, nothing can compare to the lovely Minseo."

That was another thing Yoongi didn't like about Seokjin.

"Can you have the decency to flirt with my girlfriend when I'm not around?" Yoongi asked, a bit annoyed. At Seokjin's blunt no, Minseo laughed and leaned her head against Yoongi's shoulder.

"You don't have to feel threatened by Seokjin, babe," Minseo smiled at Yoongi affectionately. "You know I only have eyes for you."

"YOONGI MIN!"

At the sound of his name being angrily called out, Yoongi looked up, face morphing to shock as his eyes met with Hoseok's furious ones. He immediately let go of Minseo, creating distance between them as Hoseok marched right up to him. Already there were people beginning to look into their direction, curiosity igniting their expressions, looking at the exchange like moths drawn to the flame.

"Hoseok, chill," Yoongi said, raising his arms in mock surrender. "I didn't give you detention today."

Hoseok scoffed. "I'm absent today, Yoongi. If you were to actually give me a detention, I'd have you fucking expelled. This isn't about detention."

"Then what is this about?" Yoongi asked, raising an eyebrow.

"You've screwed the both of us up."

Before Yoongi could say anything else in response, Hoseok's eyes flitted towards Minseo. His lips parted in surprise, and Yoongi noticed Hoseok's anger increase tenfold.

"You liar!" he hissed, walking up to Yoongi. Hoseok's fingers latched onto Yoongi's shirt, and Hoseok pulled him out of the seat. "You're still dating Minseo? You fucker, just wait until I tell my parents."

"Hoseok, let me go," Yoongi pleaded, grabbing Hoseok's wrist. Surprisingly, Hoseok quickly let him go, though his expression hadn't simmered. "There's clearly a rational explanation for all of this."

"Do tell, Yoongi," Hoseok drawled, pointing at Minseo. "You told my parents you weren't dating anyone. You told them you weren't dating her, and I thought you were telling the truth. You're fucking lucky it was me that came in here. If my parents had seen you, you would be a goner."

"What are you talking about?" Minseo asked, confused. "We haven't broken up. We're still together."

This was exactly what Yoongi had been afraid of.

"Thank you for the astute observation, Minseo," Hoseok remarked sarcastically. "Now, if you'll excuse me, your boyfriend and I have places to be."

Hoseok grabbed Yoongi's wrist and began dragging him out of the cafeteria. Yoongi stumbled forward at the brute force of Hoseok's pull, muttering curses under his breath as he noticed everyone with the phones in their hands. Some of them had followed Yoongi and Hoseok out of the doors of the gymnasium, wondering what the hell was happening between the two.

"Do you have to create such a scene?" Yoongi sputtered. "You're making a fool out of me."

"Oh, boo hoo, Student Body President," Hoseok pouted mockingly, rolling his eyes. "I was given the delightful task to pick you up. My parents are waiting in the car."

"You could have called me from the intercom," Yoongi grumbled. "It looks like I'm about to get beat up."

Hoseok let Yoongi's arm go and stopped briefly. He dusted Yoongi's uniform quickly before placing both his hands on Yoongi's shoulders, squeezing them tightly.

"Believe me, I want to do much worse," Hoseok threatened. "But because my parents are waiting for us, I won't make a fool out of you. Your parents are already waiting for us. Come on."

So Hoseok was just going to drag him into his parents' car without saying anything? Yoongi thought to himself as he followed Hoseok out of the school. What type of entitled people were the Jungs, anyway?

Whatever it was, Hoseok was clearly pissed. But, Yoongi couldn't read minds, so his mind had immediately begun conjuring bad scenarios. Something had clearly gone well between their two families. If it hadn't, then Hoseok wouldn't be mad. All Yoongi had to do was figure out what.

What and how much that would also affect Yoongi.

Hoseok's fingers grasped the car's handle. He took a deep breath, turning to Yoongi once more.

"Congratulations," Hoseok said, though his voice said anything but. "You're about to reap the consequences of your actions."

Yoongi's eyebrows furrowed. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Hoseok pointed to his lips, motioning upwards. "Smile, honey, you and your family are about to find out the news of a lifetime."

Honey?

Hoseok opened the door to the car, and Yoongi climbed in, smiling and greeting Hoseok's parents, who were in the front. Hoseok climbed in after, sitting comfortably next (but as far away as it could be permitted in the back of the car) to Yoongi. Any trace of his anger had been masked by an award-winning smile and an enthusiastic expression.

"We're ready to go," Hoseok informed his parents, still masked with the same facade.

"Look at you already using 'we' to refer to each other," Yuri laughed. "I'm so glad you've come to your senses, Seok. I would have hated to meet Yoongi's parents with an angry son."

Yoongi turned to Hoseok. "What is she talking about?"

"You'll see," Hoseok said, looking back out. "It'll be your greatest triumph."

For some reason, Yoongi didn't like the sound of that.
