Chapter 5: The First Noel

Evan was helping Finn carry a batch of freshly made bread when Danny walked in, Jessica made sure to make herself look busy.

"I'm here to pick up an order." Danny said as he looked into Jessica's eyes.

"Oh hi, Dr. Houston, you had the two boxes of cookies, two batches of cupcakes and two loaves of french bread?" Sarah questioned as she was on the phone, taking an order.

"Yeah, the hospital is having our annual Christmas Jubilee tomorrow night and you're both invited, you can bring Grace." Danny said.

"Of course! We'd love to be there. Grace would enjoy it for sure." Evan said as Jessica looked at him.

"Well, I better be going. Thank you for the treats." Danny said.

"You're welcome and we hope you and everyone will enjoy." Evan said.

"We will. Bye!" Danny said as he left.

"Jess, I have a cake order." Sarah said as she was on the phone.

"Coming!" Jessica said as she hoped no one saw the tension between her and Danny.

"Jess, are you okay?" Holland asked her.

"Of course. I'm still trying to get back in the swing of making cakes again." Jessica said.

"Well, let's go see what we can accomplish." Holland said.

"Sarah, wanna help?" Jessica asked her best friend.

"Oh goodness Jess, you sure you want my help?" Sarah asked her.

"Yes! Yes I do! It'll be just like all those times we baked, trying to create the perfect cakes." Jessica said.

"You were engaged to Evan and I remember you asked me to make your wedding cake." Sarah said as all three of them started laughing, but Jessica looked away.

"What a disaster that would have been." Holland said.

"She was so worried that no one would enjoy themselves and she stressed herself out over everything." Sarah said.

"I remember when Jessica first tasted my cooking." Sarah said.

"Oh goodness! It was terrible!" Jessica said.

"You smoked a joint before every dinner." Sarah said.

"You did too and that's because it made your food taste better and you've improved from where you were." Jessica said.

"I can eat it." Holland said.

"You're blessed." Jessica said as she laughed.

"That I am." Holland said as they walked into the kitchen to start the cake order.

...

Jessica was towel drying her hair as Evan sat there on their bed, admiring her.

"Honey?" Evan questioned.

"Yeah?" Jessica said.

"Finn and Ryan seen you at the bar the other night with Dr. Houston and they said you got pretty drunk." Evan said as Jessica hoped he didn't know all the details of her and Danny's last night together.

"I was a little buzzed but it wasn't nothing serious." Jessica lied.

"How many drinks did you have that night?" Evan asked.

"A glass of red wine and three shots of vodka, that's it." Jessica said.

"Jess, is there anything you want to tell me? Be honest with me." Evan questioned.

"Evan, nothing happened between us, I promise. We had a few drinks together, that's it." Jessica said, looking at him.

"Okay, I'll take your word for it. If you said nothing happened between you two, then nothing happened." Evan said as he felt in his heart, something happened but he pushed it aside.

"I'd never hurt you." Jessica said.

"Okay." Evan said as he felt like this was a lie.

They got in bed, he distanced himself from her after they kissed.

"Good night Jess." Evan said as he closed his eyes.

"I love you too Evan." Jessica said.

...

The next morning, Jessica woke up as she laid there, going through her phone when she got a text from Susan.

*Jess, is it true?* Susan texted.

Jessica read the text as she wondered what she was talking about.

*Is what true Sue?* Jessica texted back.

*Don't play that card Jess, you know exactly what I'm talking about!* Susan texted back.

*No, I don't Sue! Enlighten me?* Jessica said as

*Jess, did you cheat on Evan? Like what the fuck?* Susan asked.

Jessica started panicking as her mind and body went numb.

*I knew it!* Susan texted.

*Sue, I was a little buzzed and Danny asked if he could buy me a drink and I said yes.* Jessica texted.

A few moments later

*A little? The guys said you were drunk and Danny looked like he was fully enjoying himself. You were all over each other!* Susan texted.

*Like I said Susan, I was buzzed and I got a little carried away.* Jessica said.

*Yeah, I bet. What are you going to do when Evan finds out?* Susan asked her.

*I don't know.* Jessica said.

*By the way, Sarah and Holland know and they are pissed!* Susan said.

*Everyone needs to calm down!* Jessica said.

"Jess, you are about to break the heart of the sweetest man that ever walked this earth.* Susan said as Jessica looked over at the sight of her husband sleeping.

*I can't believe you.* Susan texted as Jessica closed her phone and tears formed in her eyes.

She laid back down, thankful that today was not a work day.

...

Evan was making breakfast as Grace was coloring a Christmas coloring page when Jessica walked in to see her husband and daughter, doing their own thing while talking to Grace.

"Mommy, I'm coloring this for you." Grace said.

"Thank you honey." Jessica said as she grabbed a cup of coffee.

"You're welcome mommy." Grace said.

"Hey babe! I made our traditional Christmas breakfast. I thought I'd test it before Christmas next week like I always do." Evan said.

"Looks good sweetheart." Jessica said.

"Thanks." Evan said, thinking of a way to put her in the Christmas spirit.

"Mommy, I can't wait to go to the Christmas Jubilee tonight. I have my dress picked out and everything!" Grace said.

"Mommy does too baby." Evan said as Jessica smiled.

"Mommy, are you okay?" Grace asked her.

"Yes sweetheart, mommy's okay." Jessica said.

"Okay." Grace said as she went back to coloring.

"Breakfast is ready." Evan said as he made Grace's plate first and set it front of her.

"This is good daddy." Grace said as Evan smiled and kissed her cheek.

"Thank you baby and after we eat, we still have some shopping to do." Evan said.

"Mommy, are you coming with us?" Grace asked her.

"Mommy hates crowds baby." Jessica said.

"Jess, this is a tradition we do every year." Evan said.

"I'm not going." Jessica said.

"Mommy, please?" Grace asked.

"Mommy has a few things to do." Jessica said as Evan looked at Grace's face.

"You never do anything with me anymore." Grace said as she got up and walked out of the kitchen.

"I don't feel like going, okay?" Jessica questioned.

"Alright." Evan said quietly.

...

That night

Evan and Grace walked into the hospital as Susan, Sarah and Holland looked at Evan and Grace.

"Let me guess, Jessica is at home?" Sarah asked.

"Yeah, but let's not talk about that right now." Evan said.

"Hi Grace. You want something to eat?" Holland asked her.

"Yeah." Grace said.

"Alright, let's go see what we have." Holland said as they walked away.

"I need to ask you something Susan?" Evan asked.

"Okay, what's up?" Susan questioned.

"Is Jess seeing Danny?" Evan asked as Susan looked at him.

"I don't know but Finn and Ryan seen them that night at the bar and they were all over each other." Susan said as Evan seen Holland walking back with Grace to give Sarah a plate.

"Daddy, we got you something to eat." Grace said as Evan smiled.

"Thank you baby." Evan said.

"You're welcome daddy." Grace said as Danny took the stage.

"Hello everyone and welcome to our annual Christmas Jubilee." Danny said as Evan looked down at the ground.

"You alright man?" Finn asked Evan.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Evan said.

"Wanna talk about it?" Finn asked.

"No." Evan asked.

"Man, it's not healthy to hold onto your emotions." Ryan said.

"If I said what I was thinking, I'd just be even angrier than what I am now." Evan said.

"You're always welcome to come over to my house and talk." Finn said.

"Thanks man but I've been thinking about moving out." Evan said.

"Like I said, come stay with me. I know you have the money but I hate to see you like this." Finn said.

"Thanks, I appreciate it." Evan said.

"You don't know all the details yet. I know it happened, but just let it play out." Sarah said.

"I blame myself for why it happened. I'm the reason why Jessica is unhappy, she wanted another baby and I don't because she almost died after giving birth to Grace and I don't want her to go through anymore pain." Evan said.

"I'm sorry Evan." Sarah said.

"It's okay Sarah but I think I'll let Danny and Jessica be together, she seems happier with him anyway. I'll just leave and let them have a baby together." Evan said.

"Nooo... Evan, don't say that. Jessica loves you and everyone hits a rough patch in their marriage. I mean, I remember when Johnathan was traveling for and I missed him so much." Susan said.

"Did Johnathan ever cheat on you?" Evan asked.

"I don't know if he did or not, but listen to me, I know Jessica messed up and maybe you will divorce but let it come out from them." Susan said.

"I love Jessica with all my heart but I can't be with her if we're not happy." Evan said.

"Then, go to marriage counseling." Susan said.

"We are, but what if it doesn't solve anything?" He asked her.

"Then, do what's best for you both but don't forget Grace is going to ask questions. She's very smart for a five year old and I don't want her to get hurt." Susan said.

"I know and we'll see if therapy works." Evan said.

"I hope it does." Susan said as Johnathan walked over to where her and Evan were sitting.

"Hey babe. I got some sandwiches and some other stuff." Johnathan said.

"Thanks babe." Susan said as Johnathan kissed her head.

"Hey Evan, where's Jessica?" Johnathan asked.

"She's at home. She wasn't feeling well, so she stayed at home." Evan said.

"Aww... That's too bad." Johnathan said.

Evan looked at them as he wished he could have their marriage as he seen Grace dancing with some of her friends as he grinned.

Next thing he knew, he felt a pair of hands start massaging his shoulders as he looked up to see Jessica all dolled up as Grace came and jumped on her.

"Mommy, you came!" Grace said, hanging onto her with her as Jessica smiled.

"Of course I did baby. I was just missing my babies so much!" Jessica said as she smiled at Evan, tucking a piece of loose hair behind her ear.

"We got you a present for Christmas." Grace said.

"What is it?" Jessica asked her.

"I can't tell you!" Grace said.

"Well, I can't wait to open it." Jessica said.

"I gotta go tell Ellie you're here! Hold on!" Grace said excitedly as she got up and ran off to get her friend.

"Nice to see you Jess." Susan said as Jessica pursed her lips.

"It's nice to see you too Sue." Jessica said as Grace came back with her friend Ellie and her mom.

"Oh Jessica, it's so good to see you again." Ellie's mom said.

"It's good to see you too Isabel." Jessica said as Grace sat back down on her lap.

"I hate that we haven't hung out in a long time." Isabel said.

"Well, between being home with Evan and Grace and working full time at our bakery, I barely have time to hang out with anyone besides Sarah, Holland and Susan." Jessica said.

"Well, one day we should have lunch or dinner together." Isabel said.

"I'd like that." Jessica said.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the couples dance will happen in ten minutes, so grab your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend or date and be ready to dance." Danny said.

"Evan, would you dance with me?" Jessica asked him.

"Of course baby." Evan said.

Danny was walking around to see if everyone was enjoying themselves as he spotted Jessica, laughing and smiling at Evan as he looked for someone to dance with.

"Just so you know doc, Jessica is my man Evan's wife and she'd never leave him and their daughter." Finn said as he walked away.

Evan looked at Danny as Jessica seen him standing there as she felt the tension run between them.

"He better not even think about coming over here." Jessica said as she grabbed Evan's hand.

"Alright ladies and gentlemen, grab your special someone and let's dance!" The announcer said.

Jessica stood up and grabbed Evan and kissed him.

"Let's see if you've improved since our first dance at our wedding." Jessica said as she pulled him out onto the dance floor.

"I've been dancing with Grace so, you're in for a treat baby." Evan said as he slid his hands down to her hips but she moved them to her behind.

"Mhmm... I can't wait!" Jessica whispered in his ear.

"Jess, I know we've been on the rocks lately but you know I love you so much and we can work this out together." Evan said.

"Honey, I know I've been a pain in the ass and I'm so sorry for everything that I put you through but we'll work this out and I love you so much too." Jessica said as she hugged him.as the music came on.

The First Noel by Josh Groban

"This is my favorite version of this song." Jessica said.

"Jess?" Evan questioned.

"Yeah?" Jessica asked.

"I've thought about this over and over again and I know I said some things I shouldn't have but I was scared and I never meant to hurt you." Evan said.

"Honey, I was just thinking way too fast about having another baby and I know you were scared about what happened when Grace was born." Jessica said.

"But what if we had another baby?" Evan questioned.

"Honey, I have all I've ever needed and I'm blessed to have you and Grace. I don't need another baby to make me happy, unless you really want to have that little boy we talked about when we were dating." Jessica said.

"Let's have another baby." Evan said as he smiled at the thought of another child with his and Jessica's features.

"Okay." Jessica said as she hugged him.

...

"God, I want you so bad right now!" Jessica whispered in his ear.

"I want you too but those cranberry spritzers are really kicking in right now." Evan whispered back.

"You had a whiskey on the rocks and the rest of my last spritzer." Jessica said.

"You had two spritzers and two tequila shots with Holland and Sarah." Evan said.

"I know but those spritzers are really good!" Jessica said as Sarah and Holland came over to where they were.

"Danny is looking none too thrilled about you two dancing together." Sarah said.

"He can get over it! I'm his wife and no one is going to come between me and my family!" Jessica said.

"So you already know?" Holland asked him.

"I do." Evan said.

"And you're okay with it?" Susan asked him.

"They had a few drinks together, so what's the big deal?" Evan questioned as they looked at him as Jessica knew he was about to find out what happened that night.
