Chapter 4: Silent Night
Evan got Grace ready for the Christmas Festival as she wanted her mama to go but Evan told her that Jessica didn't feel good and needed to rest.
"We'll see you later." Evan said to Jessica as she smiled at Grace.
"Have fun, be safe and keep yourselves warm and stay bundled up." Jessica said as Evan kissed her cheek and Jessica kissed Grace's cheek.
"We will mommy." Grace said as they walked out the door and left.
...
Sarah saw Evan and Grace but not Jessica as she worried about her best friend and boss.
"I guess Jessica decided to stay home?" Sarah asked.
"Yeah, she didn't want to come. She also had a headache, so she stayed home." Evan said.
"Are you okay?" Sarah asked him.
"This is the first time Jessica has been distant from Grace and it's starting to affect her." Evan said.
"Evan, Jessica's memory is at a halt right now and she can't remember some things right now but as time goes on, she and Grace will bond together again." Holland said.
"This has been going on for awhile even before the accident." Evan said.
"I don't want to get in your marriage or anything but do you think she has ever cheated on you?" Sarah asked him.
"Jessica is not like that." Evan said.
"That's what our friend said before he caught his wife in bed with their doctor who was trying to help them conceive a child." Holland said.
"I know Jessica like a book and there's no signs of infidelity and she wouldn't do that to our family." Evan said.
"Evan, she ignored you for two days straight at the bakery not that long ago before the accident." Sarah said.
"I can't make up scenarios in my head because I will overthink until I ask her and she'll tell me no. I already know how it'll go and it won't go over well." Evan said as Grace came over to him.
"Daddy, I got to pet a baby goat!" Grace said happily.
"That's awesome baby. Did you put some hand sanitizer on because we're about to eat?" Evan asked her.
"Yeah, but the goat was so cute and fluffy." Grace said.
"Well, let's get something to eat and we'll go look for some of that popcorn you like so much." Evan said as he picked her up as Sarah and Holland stood behind him.
"That's mine and mommy's favorite popcorn." Grace said as she looked down.
"Well, how about some cotton candy?" Sarah asked her.
"Yeah!" Grace said.
"Okay." Evan said.
...
They finished eating as they started walking around as Evan saw Finn and Ryan walking around as they all spotted each other.
"Hey man!" Finn said as they did their brotherly hand clap.
"Hey, I thought you were going to the movies tonight?" Evan asked him.
"I'm going next weekend. There wasn't hardly anything playing today since the festival is in town." Finn said.
"Where's Jessica?" Ryan asked.
"She's at home, resting." Grace said.
"Well, that sucks." Ryan said.
"Yeah, me and mommy got matching outfits for tonight and then, she didn't want to come with us." Grace said as everyone looked at each other.
"You know what would make mommy feel better baby?" Sarah questioned.
"What?" Grace asked.
"A stuffed animal." Sarah said.
"I wish mommy was here." Grace said as they all looked at each other again.
"I'm sorry Gracie, but what if you won some stuffed animals to add to your collection?" Sarah asked.
"Okay." Grace said.
...
Jessica sat at home when the doorbell rang as she went to open the door to see Danny standing there with a couple of presents, a bouquet of flowers and a couple of bags of groceries.
"Hi baby doll." Danny said as Jessica smiled at the nickname he'd given her.
"Hi, I thought you'd be at the festival?" Jessica asked him as Danny kissed her cheek as she shut the door and went into the kitchen.
"No, I'd rather be here with you. I knew you weren't going, so why bother." Danny said.
"My head kinda hurts and I'm tired but we need to talk about what we have going on between us and I wanted to thank you for being there that night and now, helping me get better but Danny, I love my husband and daughter." Jessica said.
"What about us?" Danny asked her.
"I had some time to think about it and I can't be with you." Jessica said.
"You said that you don't know if you and Evan can fix your marriage." Danny said.
"We're going to marriage counseling." Jessica said.
"Do you still have feelings for me?" Danny asked.
"Somewhat yes." Jessica said.
"Jess, I know it's hard but maybe we could be together, like in secret?" Danny questioned.
"Danny, I have loved Evan for over thirteen years and we have our daughter. I just can't end my marriage and break the hearts of my family over a couple nights of drunken sex together." Jessica said.
"Jess, when's the last time you and Evan had sex that was pleasure, not rushed?" Danny asked.
"Not too long ago but the other night, I just felt so lonely with Evan being away at a meeting for the expansion of our bakery and Grace was at her friend's house. I can't break up my marriage for something that shouldn't of happened. I cheated on my husband and I feel guilty and like I said, I don't think we should see each other outside our occupations." Jessica said as Danny put his head down and Jessica looked away.
"So, this is it? Was I just some fun time to be had because it sounds to me like I'm just your rebound sex toy." Danny said.
"Danny, if I left my husband and daughter for you, then I would lose my reputation as a good bakery owner to which my husband and I own together and Grace, she won't know what to think if her mommy decided to separate from her daddy. She'd be all confused and I am not putting her through that." Jessica said.
"Then, I'll leave and refer you to one of my colleagues. Have a wonderful holiday season Jessica, maybe your husband won't find out about this." Danny said as he walked to the door as Jessica was hot on his heels.
"Are you going to tell him?" Jessica asked him.
"No, but someone who watched us those nights you were all over me at the bar might come to the bakery and tell him." Danny said.
Jessica was nervous at this point. What if someone were to tell him, that for sure would be the end of their marriage.
"And a couple of those guys that we seen there that night because they waved at us, are Evan's friends from the charity baseball games we host to raise money for children with illnesses." Danny said.
"Danny, do not tell Evan, please? My marriage would be over and done. I was very lonely at that time and you were there for me, drinking and I crossed a line when we went back to your room you reserved that night before you left for a business trip." Jessica said as Danny looked at her.
"So, when you personally came by and sat in my office, waiting for me, you kissed me and decided we should continue this little game you're playing because you and Evan aren't happy anymore. What was all that about? You made every first move in whatever charade this is." Danny said.
"Me and Evan are very happy!" Jessica hollered.
"No you're not! You didn't even go to the damn Christmas festival with your husband and daughter, who wants you there and instead, you called me over here to tell me that you needed me so bad and now, you changed your mind? If you were happy with your husband, then you'd be with him and your daughter, not me because I wanted to go too but no, we're here, talking about this." Danny said.
"I told you I have a headache and I'm tired." Jessica said.
"Then, I'll leave and let you rest." Danny said.
"Danny?" She questioned.
"What?" He asked.
"You and I got closer than we should've been and I'm to blame for that and I don't want Evan to find out about this." Jessica said.
"That's exactly what this was. You used me because you're unhappy in your marriage to a great guy who's tired of having to deal with his wife being in a nutshell all day long. Evan's a great guy and he deserves to know exactly what happened but it won't be me telling him and the truth eventually will come out." Danny said.
"You're right, I'm unhappy in my marriage but Evan knows that I have my reasons for wanting to be alone at times and we're going to marriage counseling. I know he's a great guy and I know it'll come out eventually that I cheated on him but you came onto me as well. You're just as guilty as I am and that'll come to light too Danny and I can't believe that you thought you were that amazing enough in bed to think that I'd leave my husband and child and everything I have ever worked for and accomplished. I love my family and I'm sorry we ever got close and now, I don't know what I'll do if he ever found out about us." Jessica said as she started crying.
"I never asked you to leave your husband and daughter. I think you had some fantasy to think I would stoop that low to ask you to leave them. Evan is a great man and I would never do that to him and I was there when Grace was born, held her while Evan cut her umbilical cord and the look of happiness on his face when that little angel was born. I would never do that to anyone's family and now, I get to deal with it too when Evan finds out that we slept together." Danny said.
"I think it's best if you just leave because Evan and Grace will be home soon and I have to prepare dinner." Jessica said.
"I don't think you should do that in your condition." Danny said.
"I'm perfectly fine to cook dinner for my family." Jessica said as she started setting stuff out.
"Well, I hope you and Evan enjoy the bottle of wine I brought." Danny said.
"I'm on medication right now and I wish I could drink." Jessica said.
"I'm sorry, it totally slipped my mind that you couldn't drink." Danny said as Jessica's phone started ringing as she looked at it.
"It's Evan. I have to take this so please be gone before I get back." Jessica said as she walked into the pantry to get something and answered her phone.
"Hi honey." Jessica said.
"Hey babe, I was wondering if you needed me to get anything on my way home?" Evan asked.
"No, but I'm making dinner for us." Jessica said.
"Jess, you shouldn't be cooking. You should be resting like Dr. Houston said to." Evan said as Jessica's heart started racing at the mention of Danny's name.
"Evan, I can cook whether he says my memory is gone or not." Jessica said.
"Have you already started?" Evan asked.
"Yes, but what if you, me and Grace watched Christmas movies when you get home?" Jessica asked as she felt guilty of what she had done, hoping that no one would say anything.
"Sure babe, we'd like that and Grace has some presents for you when we get home. She's really excited to show them to you." Evan said as Jessica smiled.
"I can't wait for her to show them to me." Jessica said as she walked out of the pantry to see if Danny had left yet and went to see if his car was still in the driveway but he had already left as she sighed in relief.
"We missed you today. Me, Grace, Sarah, Holland, Ryan, Finn and everyone. They were asking about you and I told them you weren't feeling well but Grace and I got you some things to make you feel better." Evan said as Jessica smiled but looked over on the table to see the vase full of flowers and bottle of wine Danny got her as she tried to shove him out of her mind.
"Well Monday, I'll be there with you at work. I'm slowly regaining my memory and I'm ready to go back to work. I hate staying here in the house all day." Jessica said.
"Okay, then I'll call Sarah before I get home and tell her. She'll be so happy to see you." Evan said.
"I'll be happy to get back to work and I just want you to know honey, that I love you." Jessica said.
"I love you too baby." Evan said.
"I'll see you when you get here." Jessica said.
"Okay." Evan said as he hung up the phone as he looked to see that Grace fell asleep.
...
They got home to see Jessica propped up against the sink with her iPad.
"Hey babe, we're home!" Evan said as Jessica smiled.
"How was the festival?" She asked.
"It was great!" Evan said as he put the bag of stuff they got at the fair on the table.
"Mommy, I got you some popcorn and a caramel apple." Grace said as Jessica smiled.
"Thank you baby, we'll eat these during our movie after dinner." Jessica said.
"What's for dinner?" Evan asked.
"Chicken noodle soup." Jessica said.
"Yummy." Grace said.
"I'm taking a bath after movie night. Want to join me honey?" Jessica asked Evan.
"I'd love to babe." Evan said.
"Miss Gracie, I'll give you your bath before the movie." Jessica said.
"Okay." Grace said.
"Go pick your pajamas out." Jessica said as Grace went to her room as Evan spotted a bottle of wine on the table.
"Jess, where did this bottle of wine come from?" Evan asked.
"I bought it a few days before the accident. I just can't drink it right now because of my medicine." Jessica said.
"Okay." Evan said as Jessica felt guilty for lying to him but she didn't want to tell him Danny stopped by.
"What movie were you wanting to watch first?" Jessica asked him.
"What do you want to watch?" Evan asked her.
"I was thinking 'The Polar Express'?" Jessica questioned.
"Sounds good." Evan said.
"Now, I know Sarah taught you how to work that Roku thing but I can't figure it out." Jessica said.
"It's easy babe, I'll show you how to use it." Evan said.
"Okay." Jessica said.
...
Dinner was served and they are together as Jessica felt so blessed to have them and to think that could all vanish because of a couple stupid drunken nights.
"Mommy, I also mailed off my letter to Santa and Aunt Sarah said that she's having a Christmas party at her house a couple days before Christmas." Grace said.
"Well, mommy and daddy will talk to Aunt Sarah on Monday." Jessica said.
"Okay mommy." Grace said.
"Evan, we still have a few people to shop for for Christmas." Jessica said.
"I know babe. I thought we could go this weekend." Evan said.
"Yeah, I'd like that." Jessica said.
"I do too." Evan said.
...
After their movie night, they turned out the lights and Evan carried a sleeping Grace into her bedroom and tucked her in, kissing her head and turning on her night light as he walked out of her room and into his and Jessica's.
"Good night babe." Evan said kissing Jessica's cheek.
"Good night darling." Jessica said as they turned out their light and went to sleep.
It definitely felt like a silent night here at the Peters household.
