Chapter 3: Joy To The World

It seemed strange to feel like you don't know who you are or who you're married to but with Jessica's diagnosis of mild amnesia, it felt like she was a stranger in general especially when people who know you try to make you remember events from the past.

Jessica slowly and surely tried to regain her memory especially when Grace asked her questions but it was hard to remember them as she felt like a stranger to her own daughter.

"Mommy, I know you don't remember me but don't worry, you'll get back to your old self." Grace said as Jessica smiled.

"I know I will and with yours and everyone's help, I'll be better in no time." Jessica said as Evan walked in to his wife and daughter, talking as Jessica was tickling her.

"Daddy, mommy somewhat remembers me!" Grace said as she ran up to him as Jessica smiled.

"That's great baby." Evan said.

"I'm going to color mommy a picture." Grace said as she ran off to her room as Jessica looked away from Evan, not knowing what to say.

"Evan?" Jessica's shaking voice asked.

"What's wrong?" Evan asked her.

"I don't know, it feels strange being here." Jessica said.

Jessica was let out of the hospital yesterday as she was having trouble with her memory as she just sat there and looked around at photos of them in pictures books and on the wall.

She looked around at the pictures of her and Evan with Grace, all the photos of them smiling as none of this made any of her memories come back.

"Why can't I remember anything?" Jessica asked as she heard the door creak open as Grace and Evan brought a tray in of breakfast items.

"Good morning sweetheart." Evan said as he went to kiss her.

"Evan, why can't I remember anything?" Jessica asked as Evan looked at her.

"Because you suffered a light concussion and it'll take some time for you to regain your memory." Evan said.

"This must be some kind of joke." Jessica said.

"Mommy, why are you acting strange?" Grace asked her as Jessica knew she was definitely in a dream.

"Evan, I was just here a couple of days ago and my memory was perfect." Jessica said.

"Jess, you're suffering from amnesia." Evan said.

"Evan, this can't be happening. I mean, what if I don't remember you or Grace?" Jessica questioned.

"Babe, you are Grace's mother and my wife. I know it's hard right now, but you'll regain your memory soon." Evan said.

"This is a dream." Jessica said as she walked out the room to see more pictures of them together with both sides of their family until one particular photo caught her eye.

It was a picture of Jessica and Evan together and a newborn baby Grace in her arms as their looking down at her, smiling as she grabbed it off the wall.

"Evan?" Jessica came running in his room with the photo in her hand.

"Yes?" He answered.

"This happened before Christmas." Jessica said as Evan looked at her.

"Jess, just take it easy. Don't rush yourself and I'll help you regain your memory." Evan said.

"I'm just so confused and I feel like I'm in a daze." Jessica said as she looked down at the picture of all three of them together.

"You asked your sister Jane to take that picture of me, you and Grace to frame so we'd treasure the memory forever." Evan said.

"This isn't making any sense to me right now." Jessica said.

"Maybe we should get you to a doctor." Evan said.

"No, I wanna know everything there is to know." Jessica said.

"Okay, ask me anything." Evan said.

"When did we get married?" Jessica asked.

"We got married on November nineteenth of 2010." Evan said.

"And when was Grace born?" Jessica asked.

"February eighteenth of 2016." Evan said.

"So, she's five?" Jessica asked.

"Yes." Evan said.

"Where do we work and what do we do for a living?" Jessica asked as Evan held her hands.

"We work in a bakery that we own together." Evan said.

"Okay." Jessica said.

"You're going to get your memory back babe, but for right now, let's just relax." Evan said as Jessica closed her eyes.

...

Evan walked into the bakery to see Sarah carrying a basket full of bread as she put it where it goes.

"Hey, how's Jess?" Sarah asked.

"Her memory is still fuzzy but she decided to have a little tea party with Grace so I came to pick up some treats." Evan said.

"Maybe we can bring something to eat for you three, so you don't have to cook." Holland said.

"No, I have it under control." Evan said.

"Okay, well if you need help, you know where we live and you know our phone number." Holland said.

"Yes and I have to get back before Jessica worries." Evan said.

"Okay, have a great day!" Sarah said.

"You too." Evan said, walking out of the bakery and headed home.
...

Jessica sat down on the couch, drinking a cup of hot chocolate, watching some cartoon show with her daughter when Evan walked in, admiring his wife and daughter.

"Hey babe, I got some baked goods and groceries." Evan said.

"Okay." Jessica said as she just held her head.

"Babe, what's wrong?" Evan asked.

"I feel like a stranger in my house! I barely know you and I sit here, trying to think of something to ask Grace but I can't!" Jessica said.

"Honey, you just got home yesterday, but maybe we can take your mind off it. What would you like to do?" Evan asked her.

"I don't know." Jessica said.

"Daddy, we got the Christmas festival tonight, remember?" Grace questioned.

"I remember baby." Evan said.

"Mommy, we got matching Christmas outfits and I have a hair bow to match it. Don't you remember we got them together?" Grace asked her.

"I don't really remember sweetheart. I'm sorry." Jessica said as she looked away.

"Gracie, why don't you go lay out your outfit and let me and mommy talk?" Evan asked.

"Okay daddy." Grace said as she skipped off to her room.

"I can't remember anything." Jessica said.

"That's why we're going to get out of the house tonight. We'll go have some Christmas fun with our daughter and maybe it might be the boost you need." Evan said.

"How does that help me regain my memory?" Jessica asked.

"Jess, she's been looking forward to this for weeks and it's not our fault that you decided to go for a drive on a road in the middle of the night and that so many people have gotten killed on, so the least you can do is go with us to make her happy." Evan said.

"Then, you can take her because I don't wanna go." Jessica said.

"Grace won't like that you're not going." Evan said.

"Maybe I just want to stay home. If you wanna take Grace to the Christmas festival, then do it." Jessica said as Evan looked at her.

"You know what? I'm tired of arguing everyday. I mean, I understand you're upset with me because I don't want to have another child but that's no reason to just sit there." Evan said.

"I wanted to have another child?" Jessica asked him.

"Isn't that why you decided to take a drive, to clear your head?" Evan asked.

"I don't know." Jessica said.

"That's the only reason I can think of." Evan said.

"Well, maybe that's why I decided to take a drive in the middle of the night but I have always wanted another baby but if you don't want another child, then fine, have your way. Men always get their way, it's not like you'll be the one carrying our child, getting sick at every wee hour of the day and going through the excruciating hours of labor to bring our child into this world." Jessica said as Evan sat there.

"Jess, we've been over this but right now is not the time to be discussing this, not with your condition." Evan said.

"Evan, I feel like we're drifting apart. If it wasn't for that precious child in there, we'd be over." Jessica said.

"We've been drifting apart for a long time." Evan said.

"Do you even want to be with me anymore?" Jessica asked.

"Of course I want to be with you. We just don't have anything in common anymore like we used to." Evan said.

"When I get my memory back, if I do. Then, what's going to happen to us?" Jessica asked him.

"I think we need to go to marriage counseling." Evan said.

"Okay." Jessica said as she looked out the window again but closed her eyes to keep the tears from falling down.

"I think it'd be good for us to listen to someone who could help us fix our marriage. I love you Jess, but we can't go one day without fighting and I'm tired of it. We used to have tiny blow ups but now, we have the big ones and honestly, I just want to go back to what we had. All our plans we made together just seem like impossible. We opened our bakery so we could serve our town with the love they gave us when we had nothing but our dreams." Evan said.

"Why did we get married?" Jessica asked him.

"Because we couldn't imagine living without one another. I was crazy about you and you were crazy about me too. We love each other and we planned out our life together and I love you more than anything else in this world and I can't spend the rest of my life knowing if we should fix our marriage or end it. I don't want to end what we have because we've worked too hard to not end what we have." Evan said.

"Sometimes, I wonder if we just need a break and pick up the pieces after. I feel like a stranger sitting here in front of you and to our daughter." Jessica said.

"Do you think that we really need a break?" Evan asked.

"For a little while maybe. It would do us some good because I don't know how much longer I can take this." Jessica said.

"Jess, I can't leave you alone. You just had a wreck and I'm not leaving. I'm your husband and we made a vow to be there for each other from sickness and in health." Evan said.

"Fine, but I think you should take the guest bedroom." Jessica said.

"I can do that and sometimes, I can't even recognize the woman I married." Evan said.

"I don't recognize the man I married either." Jessica said.

"I'm gonna go see if Grace is ready for the festival." Evan said as he stood up and walked off.

"Joy to the world." Jessica said as Evan walked off.
