Chapter 2: Jesus Take The Wheel

Evan was writing some notes down on his legal pad when Jessica came in from getting their daughter from her friend's house.

"Hey sweetie. How was the sleepover?" Evan asked his daughter.

"It was good daddy. We made ornaments and baked cookies." Grace said.

"That sounds fun." Evan said as Jessica was putting groceries away.

Grace went to her room as Evan snuck up behind Jessica and wrapped his arms around her waist.

"Evan, I'm putting groceries away." Jessica said.

"Come take a shower with me." Evan whispered in her ear.

"I took one this morning and you were in there with me." Jessica whispered back.

"Yeah, but Grace will know something is going on if she hears us." Evan said.

"Wait till tonight after we go to bed." Jessica said.

"Hmm... I can't wait." Evan said as Jessica smiled.

"God, I love you." Jessica said as she kissed Evan.

"God, I love you too gorgeous. What's that bottle right there?" Evan asked her.

"Well, I was thinking about making our famous coconut rum cake for Christmas and I thought we could just spend the day together, cooking and baking like we used to before we started our bakery." Jessica said as Evan smiled at her.

"I love that idea." Evan said.

"Me too." Jessica said as Evan kissed her again.

...

"How drunk are you willing to get? On a scale of one to ten?" Jessica asked him as she set out a couple of whiskey glasses.

"I don't know, depends." Evan said.

"How about a five?" Jessica questioned.

"Babe, your preference is either of three choices: vodka, tequila or wine. The last time you drunk rum was when we were in New Orleans and Grace wasn't conceived yet." Evan said.

"I know but I want to have a fun Christmas this year. Like since it's the fifth of December. I think we should drink, cook, bake, listen to Christmas music and watch Christmas movies later on with our baby girl." Jessica said.

"That sounds like a great plan but are you sure you want be too drunk?" Evan asked her.

"Honey, I can drink and still function, unlike you." Jessica said.

"I can drink and function too but when you decide that one night you want to go to a bar for date night, that's when the real fun begins." Evan said.

"When we used to go to bars, I vaguely remember that most of our time was spent either drinking or winding up in a stall farthest to where no one could here us, which they could not because the music was so loud and it wreaked of smoke and alcohol. Not to mention that a young couple was always right beside us, having the time of their lives." Jessica said.

"Well, I remember we had the time of our lives too. I remember one time, you wore this red dress and it hugged your curves and we were dancing, you looked so damn good baby." Evan said.

"I'm glad you remembered that dress, it wasn't my favorite but Sarah convinced me to wear it." Jessica said.

"Well thank you Sarah." Evan smiled.

"And the night that you asked me to be your girlfriend, I wore that red dress with my cleavage exposed for you and only you to see." Jessica said.

"That's the night I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you." Evan said.

"You have made me a very happy woman." Jessica said.

"Hey, what do you say we go out tomorrow night? We can get a room and go out on the town for drinks and dancing?" Evan asked as Jessica smiled.

"I'd love that, but who's going to watch Grace?" Jessica asked.

"We can get Sarah and Holland to watch her." Evan said.

"Okay." Jessica smiled.

"I can't wait to see what you'll wear." Evan said.

"I can't wait either." Jessica said as she poured some of the strong liquid in a glass over ice.

"Are you sure you don't want a whiskey on the rocks?" Evan asked her.

"Nope, this will give me a buzz faster and after the week we've both had, we deserve this." Jessica said.

"You're right babe, now let's have some fun." Evan said as he kissed her.

...

Jessica was piping flowers when Grace came in with her letter for Santa.

"Mommy, daddy! I have my letter for Santa!" Grace said excitedly.

"Well, when we go shopping this weekend. We can go take it to the box where all the letters for Santa go." Jessica said.

"What did you ask for this year?" Evan asked his daughter.

"You really want to know?" Grace asked them.

"Of course baby." Jessica said as she started putting flowers on the cake.

"I want a dollhouse." Grace said as Jessica looked at Evan and they both looked at their daughter.

"Well sweetheart, I think you'll get that. You've been so good this year and he'll definitely be able to get you a dollhouse." Jessica said.

"Oh, I also asked him for a baby sister." Grace said as Jessica choked on her water as she started coughing.

"Grace, mommy and I already have a baby and that's you." Evan said.

"But, I want someone to play with. It's boring being an only child." Grace said as Evan started making lunch.

"It's not so bad " Evan said.

"It is daddy." Grace said.

"Evan, can I see you for a moment?" Jessica asked him as she led him to the pantry to talk.

"See, I knew this would happen." Evan said.

"What is so wrong with wanting another child?" Jessica asked him.

"Like I said between our jobs and everything else we have going on, it'll be too much for you." Evan said as Jessica shook her head and closed her eyes.

"We opened the bakery when I was pregnant with Grace." Jessica said.

"Jessica, I don't want another child." Evan said.

"So, you get what you want. That's how it always is, it's always about what you want." Jessica said.

"I just don't want another baby." Evan said.

"Well I do!" Jessica said in a firm voice.

"I'm tired of having this discussion." Evan said.

"You're being an asshole and I'm tired of having to do whatever you want to do." Jessica said.

"I'm sorry if I'm being that way but I don't want to have another baby and Grace is just going to have to get her dollhouse and be happy." Evan said.

"You know what? I'm sorry I ever gave you a child to begin with! If I could have a child on my own without a coward of a man like you, I totally would!" Jessica said as she walked out of the pantry to see Grace coloring.

"Grace, go put on your coat and boots, please sweetheart?" Jessica asked as Evan looked at her.

"Mommy, what's wrong?" Grace asked her mother as she could feel the tension between her parents.

"Mommy and daddy need some time apart for right now, plus I need to go get some items." Jessica said as she put on her boots and jacket.

"Jess, the reason why I don't want another child is because we almost lost Grace when you were pregnant." Evan said.

"So, that's it. Just because of that one scare is the reason why you don't want another baby? You're the one who is being childish." Jessica said as she grabbed her purse, keys and phone.

"Sorry if I don't want us to go through that again but I have my reasons." Evan said.

"Mommy, am I not getting a baby sister?" Grace asked her.

"No baby, but maybe daddy can play dress up with you like I do." Jessica said.

"I will." Evan said.

"I want a baby sister!" Grace screamed as she stomped her foot.

"See, what you started?" Evan asked Jessica.

"Yes I did and just for that, I'm not going out with you tomorrow night." Jessica said.

"Jessica, I'm sorry." Evan said.

"No, I'm sorry. I'm just gonna clean up and go to bed." Jessica said as she set her stuff down.

"I love you and I'm saving us from the pain that could happen if we were to get pregnant again." Evan said.

"It's fine." Jessica said.

...

Jessica laid in their bed as she just looked at the ceiling, tears rolling down her face as she figured Evan would have come to bed by now.

She got up and walked down the hallway and down the stairs to see that he was asleep on the couch.

She walked over to the fridge to look in the freezer for a snack as she found nothing.

"I need to run to the store for something sweet and a pack of cigarettes." Jessica said as she quietly put on her coat and easily picked up her keys and purse as she walked to the door and slowly slipped out, walking to her car as she started it and drove off.

She started driving, feeling her head and body ache from the tiredness that overtook her overworked body.

"Jess, I'm doing what's best for us baby." She heard Evan's voice.

"Ever since I was a young girl, I always wanted children. I love Grace more than anything else in this entire world but I want her to have someone there for her just in case something ever happens to me and Evan." Jessica said.

"Maybe it's for the best, like I said we have Grace and life is good." Evan said.

"You think it's for the best! I love my daughter and I've always wanted another baby and when Grace asked us if we could give her a baby sister, my heart started aching for another baby." Jessica said.

"Where are we going?" Evan's voice asked her.

"To get some ice cream and a pack of cigarettes. After what you said to me today, I need them. I might even get a bottle of wine because I'm craving it." Jessica said as she was driving like she was running from something.

"You need to slow down." The voice said.

"Don't tell me how to fucking drive! That's all you do is boss me around." Jessica said.

"Jess, you're going over the speed limit and I don't have to listen to you. You're just a voice in my head that won't go away." Jessica said.

"This is the road they warn us about and slow down Jess!" The voice said.

"I'm fine." Jessica said.

Jessica slowed the speed down as she decided to turn back and go home as she didn't see it coming when a dip in the road came out of nowhere and her front and back tire on her side caught the bump and her car swerved off the road.

...

Evan was in a deep sleep when his phone rang as he jolted of it when he picked up his phone and answered it.

"Hello?" Evan asked, looking at the time and wondered who would call this late at night.

"Hello, is this Mr. Evan Peters?" A lady on the other end asked.

"Umm... Yes ma'am this is. What's this call regarding?" Evan asked.

"Your wife was in a car accident about ten minutes ago sir and she's being taken to the hospital as we speak." The responder said as Evan's mind went haywire.

"I'll be right there." Evan said as he ran to Grace's bedroom to wake her up.

"Gracie, hey baby, wake up." Evan said as Grace slowly woke up.

"What's going on?" She asked.

"We have to go the hospital." He said.

"Why?" She asked.

"Mommy was in a car accident and we have to go baby." Evan said.

"Okay." Grace said as she got her coat and boots on.

...

Evan arrived at the hospital and hurried up to desk to ask which room Jessica was in.

"Hi, my wife was just brought in. Jessica Peters, she was in a car accident." Evan said as the receptionist could hear him trembling.

"She's in the emergency part of the hospital. Come on, I'll take you there." They lady said as Evan's body was just trying to walk without falling.

"What happened?" He asked her.

"They didn't tell me anything but her doctor will tell you everything." She said.

"I need to see her." Evan said as they walked to see where her doctor was.

"Hello Mr. Peters." The doctor said.

"I wanna see my wife." Evan said as he held Grace's hand.

"She's being examined right now." He said.

"What happened to my mommy?" Grace asked.

"From what the paramedics told me is that there was a bump in the road and your wife's front and back tire treaded on her side and she hit the dip in front of it and swerved off the road, hitting the power pole on her side and she tried to miss it and her car would not stop." He said.

"I told her not to take that road. It's dangerous and so many people have gotten killed on it." Evan said.

"Mr. Peters, we're going to need some more information about Jessica, if that's okay?" The nurse asked him.

"Yeah." Evan said as they sat down.

"What's her full name, including her maiden name?" She asked.

"Jessica Phyllis Lange-Peters." He said.

"Birthday?"

"April 20, 1949." He said as he just wanted to see her.

"Okay, is she allergic to anything? Any kind of medicines or foods?" She asked.

"No." He said.

"Okay, well I'll give her chart to her doctor." He said.

"Okay." Evan said as he sat there with Grace, trying to keep strong for her and his wife.

...

Evan and Grace had been given updates about Jessica but they haven't got to see her yet as her doctor came out to see them.

"Mr. Peters?" He asked as Evan looked up.

"Is my wife okay?" Evan asked.

"She suffered a light concussion but nothing that requires surgery and of course with that being said, we need to keep her here for a few days because she's still in a comatose state." He said.

"Can we see her?" Evan asked.

"Of course, follow me." He said as they did.

They arrived in the room where Jessica was as Evan took a deep breath as he carried Grace to see where she laid there, hooked up to an EKG machine with a nose breathing tube and an IV.

Her face was slightly swollen and she sustained a few scratches but Evan worried something might have happened that they don't know about yet.

"Is mommy going to be okay?" Grace asked him.

"Yes baby, she's just had a rough day." Evan said as he looked at her and her doctor walked in.

"How long is mommy going to be here?" Grace asked.

"I don't know sweetheart, it's different with every patient we have here." Her doctor said.

"Is it okay if we stay here with her?" Evan asked him.

"Of course." He said.

"Well since we're going to be seeing a lot of each other. I'm Evan and this is our daughter Grace." Evan said, extending his hand to shake her doctor's hand.

"I'm Danny Houston and I'm Jessica's doctor." Danny said extending his hand to shake Evan's.

"I just want you to know that we thank you for letting us stay. I could not sleep if I were to go home, not knowing if she were to wake up and ask questions." Evan said.

"She needs her family around her and I can't turn away people who love and care for her." Danny said.

"Umm... I need to go and make a few phone calls." Evan said.

"Go ahead. I'll get one of the nurses to keep an eye on Grace here." Danny said.

"Thank you and Grace, I'll be right back." Evan said.

"Okay." Grace said, not taking her eyes off her mother.

...

Evan made the phone calls to their family as they said they would be there soon, feeling like it was his fault the reason why she was here.

"If we wouldn't have had that stupid fight, she would still be home and in bed." Evan said.

"I know I don't pray much God, but please let Jessica get through this." Evan said.

"I know this was my fault, but what if we were to have another baby? I seen her go through hell with Grace, she was miserable and I don't want to watch her go through anymore pain but this beats labor. I cause my wife pain God and I'm so sorry that I was the reason why we're here." Evan said as tears filled his eyes as he heard someone call his name as he looked up and seen Jessica's parents coming towards him.

"Evan?" Jessica's father Albert snapped him out of his trance.

"Hey Albert, Dorothy." He said.

"Where's Grace?" Dorothy asked.

"She wanted to stay in the room with Jessica." He said as they started walking towards an elevator.

...

They walked in to see that Grace had curled up next to her mama and fell asleep, to which the nurses didn't mind.

"Grace said she's not leaving her mama's side." Danny said.

"Oh Dr. Houston, these are Jessica's parents, Albert and Dorothy." Evan said as they shook his hand.

"Thank you for taking care of our daughter since she's been here." Albert said as he looked at his daughter and granddaughter.

"You're welcome." Danny said.

...

Albert and Dorothy left for the night as Evan made sure Jessica and Grace were okay as he sat down, holding his wife's hand.

"I need you here." Evan told her.

"Grace needs you to be okay, she prayed in the car. I heard her prayer and she needs you here too." Evan said.

"I need you to be okay. So, if Jesus can take the wheel at this point and stir you back to us. I promise that we'll have more one on one time together and please forgive me for what happened earlier." Evan said as he felt somewhat of what felt like a grasp of her squeezing his hand as he smiled.

"That's it baby, but take your time and don't rush yourself." Evan said as he noticed her moving somewhat.

"Let me go get your doctor." Evan said as he seen Danny standing there.

"I think she squeezed my hand." Evan told him.

"Well, let's see it." Danny said as they walked back into the room to see Jessica with her eyes opened, looking around, confused as to where she was.

"I'll get her some water." Evan said as he hurried and walked back in the room for he knew her throat was dry as he helped her.

"Jesus, take the wheel " Jessica said as she felt her pound.
