A Christmas Proposal
—————————

25 days until Christmas
- Dawson
I take a deep breath and wipe my sweaty palms against my jeans.

The first thing on Allison's marriage proposal list: Getting her parents blessing.

Here goes nothing...

I knock on the door and hear footsteps coming my way before the door opens. "Dawson! Well come on in boy! Don't just stand there." Allison's dad, Frank, opens the door wider for me.

I kick the snow off my boots and onto the welcome mat outside before stepping into the warm townhouse. "Mr. Montgomery."

"Mr. Montgomery? You normally call me by my name." He shuts the door behind me. "What's going on with you, Dawson?"

"It concerns Allison and her future.." I walk over and sit down on the burgundy love seat.

"You got her pregnant, didn't you? Jenny! Jenny, get the gun." He calls out to his wife.

I quickly jump up from my seat. "Hold up! No no and no! We've been going about our relationship in the Christian way and we respect each other too much to do that."

Jenny, Allison's mother, comes down the short hallway. "What's all this about?" She asks, her hair up in rollers.

"I want- I want to ask for Allison's hand in marriage." I come right out and say it before Frank gets anymore ideas. "She's the love of my life and I can't picture myself without her by my side."

Jenny smacks Frank on his shoulder. "And here you wanted to shoot the boy!"

"I got a little ahead, that's all.." He sits down on the arm of the couch before looking up at his wife.

She gives him a knowing look before they both nod and turn to face me.

"You have my blessing." Jenny smiles. "You've always been apart of our family from the very beginning."

"You have my blessing. But if you break her heart-" Frank shakes his pointer finger at me.

"She's safe with me, sir. You can always count on that." My face lights up and I shake his hand with excitement.

"She wants a princess cut ring but I have no idea what that means." I planned to propose to Allison on Christmas and I felt like I didn't have enough time to get things together.

Carly pats my arm and smiles reassuringly, she's Allison's sister. "I don't think you'll have a problem if you stick with me."

"Were you pleased with the ring Derek got you?" I ask curiously as I look down at her ring finger. A bright blue diamond shined on the silver band.

"He nailed it to a T." She smiles softly. "I couldn't have asked for better."

"I guess I'm just psyching myself out." I chuckle a little as we walk through a snow covered downtown.

"That's not going to help us." She pushed open the door to the jewelry shop. "Get it together before I change my mind."

I take off my beanie and walk over to the display case full of rings.

"What can I help you with today?" A woman who looks to be in her mid forties asks me.

"The girl I want to propose to wants a princess cut ring." I look up and I was embarrassed that I didn't know what I was looking for.

"Ah, that's the most popular." She walks over to a different display case and pulls out four options for me.

A red diamond caught my eye but so did the classic rings. "How am I supposed to choose.." I mumble to myself as I glanced over at Carly.

"Which one screams 'Allison' to you? That's how you choose." She picks up a simple but beautiful ring to examine it.

"Her favorite color is red.. but I don't know if she'd want a red engagement ring." I rub the back of my neck. "Which ones the cheapest?"

"Now you're really thinking like a man." Carly rolls her eyes and pushes me towards the door. "Credit card please."

I hesitantly hand her my credit card. "Don't break my bank account. I'm still trying to save up for a house."

"Go get us some coffee." Carly opens the jewelry shop door. "Go on, get."

I step out into the nippy winter air and instantly regret giving Carly my credit card.

"Parents permission? Check. Engagement ring? Check. Photographer? Nope.."

I check off the things I've already done and I search through the internet to find a really nice professional photographer in our area.

"Whatcha doing there?" Allison comes up behind me and wraps her arms loosely around my neck.

Allison always comes over to my apartment after she gets off work, tonight I promised her a hallmark Christmas movie marathon. I couldn't possibly say no to my girl even though I hate hallmark movies.

I click off the page I was looking at and shut my laptop before turning around in my chair. "Nothing of your concern."

She smiles mischievously and glances at my closed laptop. "Mhm, I smell a lie."

"What- no." I shake my head and push my chair away from my dining room table so I could stand up.

"I know when you're truthful and this is not one of those times." She folds her arms across her chest.

"Do I smell cookies burning?" I sniff the air. "Yep, that's definitely the smell of burning cookies."

Her smile fades as she jogs into the kitchen and opens up the oven. "Shoot!" She turns the oven off and pulls them out, they looked like they could be salvaged but I honestly didn't want to take a chance.

"No hallmark movie marathon then since the cookies are ruined." I pretend to be sad before letting out a chuckle.

She turns around slowly and gives me the evil eye, her shoulders slumped. "We're still having a hallmark Christmas movie marathon. Do you.. do you have any more cookies left?"

"You're lucky you're cute." I grin and go look in the refrigerator for another batch of Christmas cookies.

Parents permission? Check. Engagement ring? Check. Professional photographer? Check.

Who knew that so many people would propose to their girlfriends on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

It took me a while to find one that wasn't booked but after a week of searching I found one that looked promising. The price was also reasonable so I wouldn't have to break bank for a few engagement pictures.

Next up on Allison's perfect proposal list: Make sure she's wearing something pretty.

I headed to the small mall in town and immediately went to her favorite store. I was alone on this journey to find clothes she'd approve of but I had a feeling I'd nail it, today would be a great day.

The store had different colored jeans folded on a display table when you walked into the store and my eyes went to the burgundy colored ones. I mentally praise myself for this choice, Allison would approve of this.

I walk over to the sweaters hanging on a rack and search through them for a white one.

"Need any help, sir?" A saleswoman asks me.

"A white sweater." I state. "It's for a special occasion."

"There's some more towards the back of the store." She smiles kindly.

"It's not for me." I blurt out and chuckle. "It's for my girlfriend."

She nods and leads me to some more sweaters. "I figured as much. I'm sure she'll be pleased with everything you get her."

"Thank you." I look through and find a white sweater in her size. I turn around and grab a burgundy scarf off a hook.

"Those are our most popular pairings." The saleswoman points to the clothing in my hands. "They're often bought with our black knee high laced boots."

"Boots, right." I smile appreciatively. "Do you have a size 7?"

"We should." She grins before handing me a shopping basket. "Just let me know if you need help with anything else."

"Thanks again.." I look at her name tag. "Nancy."

"Merry Christmas." She replies then walks away to help other customers.

I find the boots and do a little happy dance on the inside when I see they have Allison's size.

Burgundy jeans: Check
White sweater: Check
Burgundy scarf: Check
Black laced up boots: Check

I also pick up some Christmas mittens and a gingerbread smelling perfume before heading to checkout.

I had bought three present boxes to put the outfit, boots, and perfume in.

My grandmother passed down a cross necklace to me and told me to give it to my future wife. I place it in the box with the perfume and then shut everything up.

"Don't let her open these until the day of." I give Carly instructions.

"Got it." She takes the boxes into her arms.

"I mean it, Carly. Don't even let her peek at what's inside." I warn with a teasing tone.

"You have my word." She squeezes my shoulder. "Allison will love everything you have planned."

"Don't forget to take her to get her nails done on the 23rd. Her nails have to be done, it's on Allison's perfect proposal list."

"Stop worrying!" She laughs and opens up the door to exit my apartment. "It's going to go great."

I really hoped Carly was right.

"Dawson's been acting really weird here lately.. do you happen to have an idea as to why?" I look over at Carly who was getting her nails done beside me.

"Everyone gets a little crazier around Christmas." She smiles, but there was something she wasn't telling me.

"He's been avoiding me and he makes up these lame excuses." I sigh and look down at my nails. A sparkly ruby red nail polish with white stripes to resemble candy canes.

"If only you knew what he has planned." Carly mutters to herself.

"What did you just say?" I was curious. What did she mean by that?

"Huh? Oh.. it's nothing. Really." She reassures me.

"Okay then." I didn't buy that for one second.

Something was going on and I hated that I was being left in the dark.

Christmas Eve
- Dawson

"I can't go out with you tonight, Allison. I've got something I need to finish up.. I'm sorry. I know you wanted to try that new restaurant in town." I hated to do that to her but I needed to get everything wrapped up for tomorrow.

"That's alright. I honestly like being avoided." She was a bit snappy with me. "Have a nice night, Dawson." And with that she hangs up.

I didn't mean to be so distant but if I was going to pull this proposal off then she couldn't be sticking her nose in things.

Now I start to wonder if I'll even have a girlfriend to propose to at all on Christmas.
So I close my eyes and begin praying.

"Dear Lord,
Even if I don't end up with Allison I want to pray for her. I pray for her heart. May You continue to mature her, and reveal Yourself to her in mighty ways. I pray that she will love You passionately. May You and her have an incredibly deep relationship. I pray she'll be willing to open her heart to You. I pray she comes to You in prayer and is vulnerable about the things she is facing in this life. I pray she relies on You for help and guidance. Fill her with Your wisdom. I pray a blessing over her heart. I also pray for protection. Please remove any temptation or evil that is attempting to make her fall, get hurt, or turn from You. Guard her heart, and cover her with Your peace. If there are any situations or circumstances that cause her pain, I pray that You will heal her. Make her heart whole. I pray Allison will have a strong understanding of who You are and how You are moving in her life. I pray her heart is full of discernment and is sensitive to Your Holy Spirit. I pray that she is willing to address her emotions and doesn't push them away. Soften her heart so that she is always willing to yield to You in humbleness. I also pray that she will embrace all that You have for her and that she'll be passionate to serve You joyfully. I pray she'll love You will all her heart, all her soul, all of her mind, and all of her strength.
In Jesus' name I pray, Amen."

Christmas Day ( A.k.a proposal day! )
- Dawson

I rented a suit for this, I'm pretty sure Allison would like the touch of class.

I pick up our new golden retriever puppy and put on it's red collar. "Alright, you ready to surprise mommy in a little bit?" Allison has always dreamed of owning her own dog but her parents never allowed it, so I'm making her dream—or shall I say dreams—come true today.

He just wags his tail as he tries to lick my face. I chuckle. "I take that as a yes."

My phone buzzes in my pocket as I sit the little rascal down. I pull out my phone.

I have a text from Carly

Carly- 'Allison is all dressed up in the outfit you bought her but she's beginning to get really impatient. You need to be ready ASAP!'

Me- 'That's Allison for ya. Everything is set up so all you need to do is bring the special lady.'

Carly- 'She's been a pain in the butt! I better get a awesome Christmas gift out of this.'

Me- 'Come on down to the church. I'll be waiting :)'

- Allison

"What are we doing at a church? I thought we were meeting Dawson at the restaurant." I had to admit that the scene was beautiful. Everything covered in snow except for the rose petals leading up to the church.

"I thought it would be a good idea if we stopped here and had a Christmas photo shoot. You're dressed appropriately, your nails are done, and you're having an awesome hair day!" Carly parks the car in between two snow covered pine trees.

"You know I can't resist some good pictures, especially at a place this beautiful." I smile and get out of the car.

When we get out and walk to the front of the little white church the door opens just enough to let a puppy out. The puppy comes running down towards me so I scoop him up.

"Hey little guy." I smile and check his collar. "So your name is Scout." I notice a note tied to the back of his collar so I take it off of him and untie the red string around it.

'Follow the rose petals into the church and stop when you get to the middle of the aisle.'

I turn around and look at Carly. "This is in Dawson's handwriting."

"Why would Dawson be here?" She tries to play dumb.

"You tell me." I smile as I begin to follow the rose petals up the steps. Little did I know that a photographer was capturing this moment.

"I'll just wait out here." Carly grins before walking around to the side of the church. Odd.

"Alright, Scout. Let's go on a little adventure." I scratch the puppies head and push open the door that leads into the church.

The church was dark except for the candles lining the aisle. "Hello?"

No answer.

I proceeded to follow the directions of the note and stop in the middle of the aisle. "Hello? I did what the note said, now what?"

Soft lights come on right in front of the altar. The lights form the words 'Will You Marry Me?'.

"I must be in the wrong place." I look around but it's too dark to see anyone.

"No, sweetheart." Dawson's low but sweet voice comes from somewhere behind me. "You're at the right place."

I turn around to see Dawson holding a candle in one hand and a rose in the other. He was also dressed in a suit which was even weirder. "Merry Christmas."

"What-" I glance at the lights in front of the altar and then at him again.

Scout wiggles around in my arms so I adjust him into a more comfortable position.

"I haven't been avoiding you in a bad way. I've been avoiding you to keep all of this a secret." Dawson explains as his smile grows. "Scout is your Christmas present and so is all of this."

He puts the candle down before reaching into his back pocket to pull out a red velvet box. Dawson gets down on one knee and looks up at me with adoration.

"Allison Rose Montgomery, you've made me the happiest man alive and I can't wait to see what our future holds." He opens the red velvet box to reveal a beautiful princess cut ring. "Will you marry me?"

I didn't even notice Carly or the photographer filming and photographing us. I was so wrapped up in the moment that I didn't care what I looked like, and I knew my eye makeup was a hot mess.

I nod quickly and wipes my eyes. "Yes, a million times yes!" I smile happily as he slips the ring onto my ring finger, both our hands shaking a little.

He stands up and pulls me in for a sweet and loving kiss. "You don't know how long I've been waiting to do this." He mumbles as we break the kiss.

"It's about time." I giggle and look down at Scout. "A fiancé and a puppy all in the same day. I'm living my dream!"

Dawson stares at me like I'm a rare jewel. "Do you really know how much I love you?"

I meet his eyes as I touch his cheek. "I do. And.. I really need to apologize for my attitude last night."

"It's already been forgiven." He smiles and cups my cheeks gently in his hands. "I'm just glad you didn't breakup with me before I proposed."

"I'd be losing something amazing if I broke up with you." I kiss him again. Scout licks our faces which causes us to laugh.

"Merry Christmas, Allison." Dawson takes my left hand and presses a gentle kiss to my knuckles.

"Merry Christmas, Dawson." I whisper as my eyes fill up with more tears.
