Chains and Shadows

I'm sitting by the fire now. The soft crackling of the orange-golden tinted flame calmed my slightly traumatized nerves from the shadow that was standing there. I swear I can still see it's familiar face in the dance of the flame. I look away from it's entrancing dance and sit in a chair that has the book I'm reading testing on its arm.

Click-Clack. Click-Clack.

I perk up and glance at the door to the room I'm in. I shrug since there was nothing there. I turn to the next page of my really enticing book.

Click-Clack. Click-Clack.

This time it was getting louder and louder. The sound of dragging chains and the tundra-like chill that suddenly filled the air, there was no doubt in my mind now. Someone's in the house! I ran straight to the door and double locked it. I turned out all the lights except the fire because it was the only thing that was fighting what seemed like that arctic that just entered my room. I jumped to the sound of a solemn, melancholy, bell's ring. It started out slow and literally got louder and louder as it got faster and faster. More bells joined in the chorus of the obnoxious ringing. Then they stopped. A dusty figure with chains just formed out of the dust from underneath the door. "H-how did you get inside?! I locked all the doors! Wh-what do you want of me??" I was terrified. I huddled inside my wings and curled into a ball.

"Much."

"Who are you?"

"Ask me who I was."

"Alright," I huffed and crossed my arms as I unfurled and withdrew my wings."Who were you then?"

"Take a hint."

"Oh, I um, thought you actually would tell me the answer."

"Ugh, fiiinnnnneeee." The spirit said with a groan. "In life I was a very close friend of yours, Mr.G"

"No. Not possible. He died seven years ago on this very day!" I said in disbelief.

"You don't believe in me, do you?" The spirit stated.

"Do I believe Nightmare should live?"

"No."

"Then there's you answer- wait, how do you know that?"

"I've walked alongside you ever since I died." The phantom stated. "Now do you believe me?"

"Before I answer, may I ask why is there a chain around you? I've never seen that anywhere near you when you were alive."

"I've made it link by link and yard by yard. But it's nothing compared to the chain you bear."

I looked around my body and found nothing. "Tch. Sounds like bullshit to me." I snorted. In response I got one of those horrible screeches. I swear if I had ears, they would be bleeding, big time.

"Ok, so, what you're telling me is that you've came to tell me I got a chain and nothing else?" I asked the ghost.

"No, you got a chance to rewrite your fate."

"Well don't just stand there! Tell me!"

"Tonight you'll be haunted my three spirits."

"Shit!" I muttered under my breath.

"What was that?"

"Nothing. Continue."

The spirit sighed. "Expect the first at one. The second at two. And the third will come at its own good time."

"U-huh."

"Oh speaking of time. I gotta go. Bye Dream!" It said as it literally faded out into the dark abyss of the night.

"Welp! I'm out."
