Chapter Twenty Three - Games we played

My school friend, Geraldine and I used to dress up in Grandma's old dresses and shoes which she kept in the little box room at her house. I can't remember having dress up clothes at home.

I loved colouring books and did lots of it with wax crayons and then pencils.  I still like to do it now.  I colour in cards and send them to friends for birthdays and different events.  I have always loved art.

When I was 8 or 9 I had some roller skates. I loved skating about and thought I was Billy Wizz. I used to go really fast! It was quite dangerous looking back, but I don't think I ever hurt myself. There were no helmets then, or safety pads for knees and elbows. It was a wonder I didn't do myself any damage, I used to go so fast. Sometimes I would stop rolling by clinging to the lamp post and whizzing round it. The last pair of skates I had, had a rubber part at the end of the skate which you could use as a brake. You had to press your heel down and the rubber contacted the floor.

I had dancing lessons for three or four years and danced in a couple of dancing displays. I won third prize in a dance competition for dancing the sailor's hornpipe and was given a bronze medal. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I sang in two choirs for several years.

We played a lot of chase in the street. Someone was what we called 'on it' and they had to run after you and touch you and then you were the one 'on it.' We also played 'off ground touch' you had to climb onto a wall or cling to the lamp post or even stand on the step of your house to prevent being caught. We did sometimes play 'hop scotch' by drawing chalk boxes on the floor, each with a different number, and throwing a stone and then jumping to that box. I never saw the point of that game, but it did at least keep you active, jumping around.  We also played hide and seek.  Lots of us hid in the street and one came seeking.

Sometimes, playing in the street, we would stand with our arms outstretched and turn round and round until we were dizzy and fell to the floor! We liked the sensation. How mad is that?

I also had a ball which I played with in the garden and a skipping rope. At one point I had a little scooter, possibly when I was six or seven. Scooters went out of fashion shortly afterwards and I didn't see one until my son was eight or nine. They vanished for 20 years! They are popular at the moment with children and we also have electric scooters on the road, which I think are dangerous. They brought them out without telling us anything about them and there seem to be no regulations at all being enforced. People (and children even) are riding them without safety helmets and I've seen children riding them two at a time. Only people with driving licenses are supposed to rent them.

Looking through photographs lately of the our holidays, we were always with large groups of people. I remember when holidaying at Brean we played what we called 'Rounders.' This is what Americans call 'Baseball.' It was fun to play, Americans seem to treat it very seriously.  You need a lot of people to play the game.

I was never bored as a child, I could always find something to do and I enjoyed my life to the full.
