He stepped in the coffee shop, his hair in a bun with a few loose curls.
It was almost immediate that he spotted her, sitting at her usual oak table, with a sketch book and pencils in front of her.
She had a coffee cup and a half eaten muffin on the table in front of her, just above her supplies.
Matty bit his lip as he worked to keep a neutral expression.
She had looked up at him, and her eyes seemed to light up at the sight of him.
She smiled, waving as she did so.
Matty offered a smile that didn't show his full affections as he raised a hand in her direction.
He walked up to the counter, ordering his usual coffee and paying for it.
Once he had it, he sat at a booth somewhat diagonal to the girl.
He drank his coffee, in a slightly distracted manner.
It was Jessie.
Every few minutes and occasionally every few seconds her head turned to gaze at Matty.
It was ever so slightly unsettling, but Matty enjoyed the attention.
Matty finally looked over and just as he did, Jessie rose her head, and her eyes met Matty's.
Her eyes went wide as the world slowed around them.
The moment was short lived as a waiter set a boxed salad down on her table.
She looked up at the man, smiling her charming smile and thanking him, as she glanced down at it.
After a moment, she reached into her pocket.
Matty rested his chin in his palm, watching with curiosity.
She pulled out her phone, adjusting the salad as she held the camera above the leafy foliage.
She snapped a photo, then typed, a slight smile tugging ever so gently at her lips.
Matty gulped.
She looked so cool.
So... Fit.
Matty gripped his drink in his shaking hand, and stopped only for a moment to consider whether or not his next action could be seen as rude.
After a second, he stood, making his way over to her.
When he reached her table he clearly saw a finished drawing of himself back at the other table on her sketch pad.
She glanced up at him, eyes widening as she looked down at her drawing.
"S-Sorry..." She muttered, trying to cover up the drawing as if she were embarrassed about it.
"It's good," be reached down, touching her wrist. "I like it."
She stared at his hand over her skin.
"Really?" She asked.
"Yes," Matty giggled. "I'm flattered." They both said at the same time.
Both their eyes widened before they began giggling.
"Sit, please." She offered.
After the pleasant effects of the laughter had worn off, Matty leaned in a bit.
"How are you, Jess?" He asked.
Something glazed over her eyes.
There it was, that tidbit, that fraction of sadness.
Just then, he noticed that that fraction actually took over the entirety of her eyes.
"I'm fine." She said, her voice sounding small.
"How are you, Matty?"
Matty took a second as he blinked, recovering from her swift emotion change.
"Been alright." He said.
She looked him over and in that moment, the pair had known one another for years.
"I've been a bit worried about you, lately." She let out.
Matty was taken back.
"W-what?"
"You just, look... Unfit. N-not, fat or... Anything, just... Unwell." She said.
Matty took in her words, and from that moment, they spoke every day.
Hours upon hours of conversations were had in small coffee shop booths, in parks, in the woods, in the dents of beds in dark rooms...
He found that throughout their time as friends, he'd seen past the wall in her eyes that kept her seemingly happy.
He got to her core, where she'd cry while explaining experiences and horrifying times in her life.
In actuality, Matty found that she was quite like him.
And now, here he was, with her laying against his chest in his bed.
He had those fluffy white sheets pulled up to their pajama covered laps.
Matty looked up at the ceiling that was covered in galaxy like decorations and muttered aloud.
"I just had a change of heart..."
He'd accepted that he liked her.
It was okay.
Fuck, it was so fucking okay to like someone who didn't do the sane things that you did.
"What?" She asked softly, turning her head to look at him.
"Nothing," he whispered, planting a surprising yet welcomed kiss on her lips.
Their first kiss.
She kissed back before parting and resting her head against his shoulder, and he gently wrapped his arms around her and rested his head upon hers.
"Nothing."
