After explaining the mission to the group and the spies that Jax turned to Carmen.  " Wanna take on the gym here in town" Jax asked as he pointed to a gym in the center of town. "What do you think my answer will be?" she retorted back at the boy. They gave each other determined looks as the raced to the gym to see who would get to challenge it first. 

"I'm almost there" Carmen yelled back to see no one behind her except the rest of the group. "Where are you looking" Jax said as she turned to see him as well as Joan and Claire ahead of her. "How did you do that without me sensing your aura?" Carmen asked in astonishment before tripping over a rock. Jax stopped to help her up only for her to pull him down and continue to run. Jax saw that she did this and told his two companions "follow her but keep your distance I will catch up". The two looked at each other and nodded  as they began to run not looking back. Jax waited until they were out of sight to teleport to the gym door and clean himself up.

Soon the group began to show up with Carmen looking to see that she lost the race. She pulled Jax's ear and pulled him to the side. "Why did you use your powers to get here" she asked still pulling on his ear until his nanodex began to glow. Out came Asura, Jesse, Kera, Rosella, And Stryker all ready to defend their trainer. Jesse and Kera readied shadow balls while Asura readied an aura sphere in one hand and a dragon pulse in the other. Rosella's eyes began to glow light blue  as purple rocks began to appear around her while Stryker began to have electricity run through his hands. "Stand down" Jax said in a commanding tone which scared his pokemon because they had never heard him talk in such a tone. They all began to stop their attacks as Jesse and Kera hopped onto his shoulders and nuzzled his cheeks. Jesse jumped onto Carmen and did the same. Rosella and Stryker looked on as they had never seen jesse act so friendly. "Jax who is that" Rosella finally broke the silence. "This is carmen she is a travelling companion of mine as well as an older sister figure and to answer your question sis I only used them because you cheated" Jax explained. Soon an argument broke out between the two trainers before the entire group showed up to stop them from escalating into an all out aura war.  

The two finally calmed down after a few minutes. They all entered the gym to see large windmills and odd wooden doors that seem to move when you push them. Asura, Kera , and jesse all went back into the nanodex while Rosella and Stryker looked at the gym in awe. Jax used his abilities to sense how to open the doors. As soon as he was about to push the first door Carmen had already done it along with the next few. Jax ran to catch up to the group with his two psychic types on his shoulders. Once he caught up to them he began to hear arguing coming from the highest point in the gym. jax began to jump over the wooden doors with help from Rosella and Stryker who were using psychic to lift him off the ground. Soon the entire group began to float to the top where jax and the arguing was coming from. As they reached the top they saw to young women arguing one was in a full on bluish gray jumpsuit with purple wings on the top.

The other girl was a bit more tan wearing a light blue crop top and short shorts of the same color. Her hair was a dark red color with part of it in a flower like bow.

 The two looked as if they were about to tear each other to pieces if someone didn't stop them soon. Jax, Carmen, and Kumori all cleared their throats at the same time getting the attention of the arguing women. "Welcome to the Fortree city gym" the lavender haired woman said "my name is winona and I am the gym leader here. "Hi i'm Skyla the gym leader at the Mistralton city gym in Unova" the redhead said. Hearing the region unova struck jax like a truck. Jax quickly snapped out of it before anyone noticed. "I came here to challenge the fortree gym for the feather badge" Jax and Carmen said in unison freaking both the trainers out. Winona began to laugh and say "I'd be happy to take you both on but one trainer at a time". Suddenly Kumori began to leave the gym saying she would challenge it some other time before walking out the front door. "Well whose first" winona asked with a smile on her face. "Me" Jax quickly answered knowing Carmen would try to answer first. Carmen went to the stands laughing because Jax knew her all to well. 

"This will be all double battle matches that fine with you" Winona asked as she held two pokeballs. "Fine by me" Jax answered nodding to  his two kirlia's.  They quickly jumped onto the battlefield ready and raring to go. Winona threw two pokeballs into the air releasing a tropius and pelipper. The two let out battle cries in female voices. The battle quickly began with jax linking his mind to his pokemons. Winona took the first move telling pelipper to use supersonic and Tropius to use sunny day. Jax quickly reacted with hand motions that made his pokemon split up while the sunny day was being activated. Jax took this chance and thought to Stryker "Use thunderbolt on the pelipper and Rosella use Will-o-wisp on tropius" the only thing winona saw was purple fire hit her tropius and a lightning bolt hit her pelipper as both began to cry out in pain before hitting the ground. Both pokemon had fainted and jax had won the first match of three. 

Winona returned her two pokemon and sent out a shiny swellow and a skarmory as jax called his two psychic types. "Go team fire breaker" jax called out as he sent in Blake the shiny Charizard and Kurama his shiny ninetails.

 As team fire breaker was revealed they began to shine in the sunlight. The shiny swellow looked on at the other two shiny pokemon with determination to be the strongest shiny on the battlefield. Jax started the battle off with telling his ninetails to jump and use flamethrower on the skarmory while Blake used smokescreen to cover the attack so the other two pokemon didn't know where it would come from. Winona smirked and told her swellow to use gust to blow the attack and the smoke screen away. As the battlefield cleared only kurama was visible Blake was nowhere to be found. Jax laughed as he pointed towards the still active sunny day. As Winona looked she saw a shadow. "Blake use fireblast on the swellow and Kurama use psystrike on the skarmory". Before the gym leader could react her skarmory was hit by several purple rocks. Swellow was able to dodge the fire blast but only by an inch. "Swellow use aerial ace Skarmory use steel wing on the ninetails" Winona  said as jax looked even more determined. "Blake use flamethrower same with you Kurama" Jax yelled as he had planned for her to slip up. The flamethrowers hit home as the two flying types were caught in between two flamethrowers. as the two flames ceased both flying types fell to the ground. 

Jax was declared the winner and received the feather badge. Next was Carmen who used  Diana and Eileen to face off against Swablu and Altaria. The battle was over quickly as Carmen made it one on one by separating the two flying types and knocking them out. Carmen received the feather badge and an impressed look from Skyla just like Jax. The group exited the gym knowing where they needed to go. Joey was about to turn back to his pokemon form but was stopped by Jax who said that there is someone they need to see first. This confused everyone as Jax lead the way to the next route. As they were crossing the bridge they saw none other than Steven Stone looking at an empty space before fax used foresight to reveal a kecleon who got scared and attacked Jax who quickly dealt with the color change pokemon with Asura. Steven then noticed the black bracelet on jax's right arm that was missing its jewel. "Is that what i think it is?" Steven questioned pointing towards the mega ring. "Here" he said as he handed Carmen, Melody and Gary white versions of the mega ring. They each put them on as they were all given bags with several different colored jewels in them. He was about to give Jax a bag as well but was stopped as Jax whistled and a pidgeot swooped down and gave him a larger bag than the rest of the groups. The group fitted their mega rings with the keystones that were in the bags. 

After being told how they work by Jax they all left for mt. Pyre on pokemon back instead of walking through the rain. As they landed at the base Jax told latios and Latias to go into the nanodexes so they could rest. Latios angrily went into the one Jax was wearing while Latias went into the one that Carmen was wearing. As they entered they had a feeling they were being watched. "Joan Claire meet up with your respective teams so they don't get suspicious" Jax said as the two who were back in uniform ran on ahead. Jax sent out the Stryker and Rosella incase they ran into any ghost type pokemon and sure enough they were ambushed by six Banettes and ten Sableye. Carmen sent out Diana who now had a necklace with the charizardite X on it as Carmen called out an odd chant that caused the keystone to glow and for Diana to turn into a mega charizard X.

 The fire/Dragon type quickly dealt with the Sableyes. Jax began to focus  on his battle when Rosella began to evolve into a Gardevoir. Jax smirked as he told Rosella to use moonblast to deal with the ghost types. As the battles finished Jax walked over to Stryker and asked "Do you want to evolve too". Stryker's eyes were dim as he looked at Rosella. "No thanks I don't want to look even more like a girl". Stryker said as he turned his head. "You can have a more masculine look you know" Carmen said as she returned her charizard. His lit up as he was shown a picture of a Gallade on the nanodex. "Yes I want to evolve into that" stryker said excitedly. "Carmen can you get the small wooden box out of my backpack and give him the dawn stone since I can't touch them" Jax asked nicely. "Why can't you touch them" Carmen  asked Jax as she pulled the dawn stone out of the box before handing it to Stryker. As the kirlia began to evolve Jax explained that since he has so much pokemon DNA in him if he were to touch an evolutionary stone it could burn him or worse. As Stryker finished evolving they all saw a tall blue and white pokemon with an orange spike type thing on his chest and back. "Here each of you take these" Jax said while handing them their respective mega stones. Stryker's was in the form of a sword pendant while Rosella's was in the form of a ring. Each to symbolize how they would look after they mega evolved. The two put the charms on before returning to the nanodex happily. 

Soon Kera came out of the nanodex confused but also furious. "What have you done to my boyfriend he is beyond gorgeous and has a sword pendant. All the group could do was laugh while Jax explained.
