Chapter 7~ Fake it until you make it.
Grian strolled over to Mumbo's starter base, entering and seeing him crafting some more end crystals.
"Hey Mumbo, can I talk to you for a second?" He said, wondering how he would bring up the subject.
"Oh yeah sure. What is it?" He finished whatever he was doing and walked over to Grian.
"...I think that Sam's good now... he seems like he changed!" Grian smiled, but it couldn't fool Mumbo.
"No. You're lying to yourself! You were terrified when he whispered something at The Octagon! He even acted way too happy to be a real person with real feelings. He seemed... sadistic..." Mumbo finished, giving Grian a concerned look.
"I... I was just scared because I was meeting him for the first time in years!" Grian laughed nervously.
"You became even more terrified when he finished whispering to you! What did he say, Grian?" Mumbo had began shouting at his shorter friend.
"I-... he said nothing, Mumbo!" Grian shouted in retaliation, getting angrier with each word.
"Well, he evidently said something, because you looked petrified!" Mumbo said, becoming annoyed.
"Fine! If you don't believe me, then I'll just leave!" Grian shouted, thinking he had just won the conversation.
"Well that's great, because I don't want you here! Maybe I don't need you! Maybe no-one wants you here either!" Mumbo shouted, instantly regretting his words.
"...O-oh...I- I think I'll let myself out..." Grian said, holding back sobs, and staring at Mumbo with sadness.
Grian turned and ran out of the base, immediately flying away.
"Wait- Grian!" Mumbo tried running after his friend but it was too late- Grian was gone.
"What have I done..." Mumbo muttered to himself, still looking around for the upset Hermit.
With Grian
"Pity, isn't it?" Grian heard from behind him.
Grian was sat in the deepest part of the forest, crying to himself, leant against a tree. No-one could have found him, and someone just did.
"Wha- How did you find me?!" Grian asked, very alarmed.
He looked behind him, seeing Sam also sat on the muddy ground.
"I have my ways..." Sam said, giving Grian a stalkerish look.
"Oh..." Grian continued looking down at the floor.
"Anyway, Mumbo didn't seem to believe your story earlier, did he. To be fair, he is your best friend, and you've been neighbours ever since you joined Hermitcraft! He knows you. Almost like I know you! Except he respects boundaries...I don't at all!" Sam finished, seeming way too happy to be talking about something so personal.
Grian didn't say anything. He only wondered why Mumbo actually said what he did. He could have just said it in the heat of the moment, but maybe he meant it? His thoughts were all very reasonable, but he didn't want to believe any of them.
"...you seem upset, Grian. Should I leave?" Sam said, standing up and leaving anyway.
Grian closed his eyes, just wanting the sadness too end. He eventually fell asleep, still sat against the tall tree.
A little later
Grian woke, still alone, sat shivering in a forest. A single tear slipped down his cheek, when he heard a twig snap in the forest ahead. His eyes darted forward to where the sound came from and saw Tango, Bdubs, and Keralis, all looking at him, worried and concerned.
"Grian...?" Tango asked, shuffling a little closer, trying to approach the smaller Hermit carefully.
Grian wasn't sure what to do. One part of him was saying to run into the forest and pretend they never saw him. Another part of him said that he should stay and talk. He decided to try running.
He got up, stumbling a little, and tried fleeing. He could tell it was now night as it was dark, and the sun was nowhere to be found. He kept running, hearing shouting close behind him. He got tired, feeling his legs ache with each step. He slowed down a little, trying to get his breath back. His chest hurt. All he had to do was run some more. But he couldn't. Tears clouded his vision. He wasn't sure why, but he couldn't stop it. He just let out his tears. He fell to the floor, clutching his chest, trying to stop the aching feeling.
Soon enough, the other Hermits caught up to him and they were crouched down, trying to calm him.
"Hey, Grian? I'm going to need you to calm down, alright?" Tango said, putting a hand on Grian's shoulder.
Grian practiced breathing slowly and became calmer, still breathing irregularly every minute or two.
"What happened, G? And why did you run from us?" Tango asked, helping Grian stand up.
"... M-me and Mumbo got into a fight... and we both said some things we didn't mean to..." Grian mumbled.
The others looked at eachother, giving glances between the three of them. They all knew how close Grian and Mumbo were, so fighting between them was rarely heard of.
"Listen, I'm sure Mumbo wouldn't have actually meant what he said. It was probably just him being angry and unreasonable!" Keralis said, smiling at Grian.
"Maybe..." He didn't feel like saying much and started fiddling with his sleeves.
They all evidently made a decision because Tango spoke up again, "Hey, you can stay with us for the night, if you don't feel comfortable going back to Boatem. We have some spare rooms and stuff back at home, so you can crash there for the night. What do you think?"
Grian thought for a second before saying "Yeah... I think that'd be great... thank you..."
He smiled at them, feeling a little better, for the first time since he had spoken with Mumbo.
