Chapter 21~ The Sam Squad

Ren looked around the grassy plain like he'd been told to do. Sam had said that he should be on lookout duty until Doc was finished on his newest project. It was a shame that the rest of his friends didn't believe Sam. Thinking about how many people trusted Grian instead made him think there was something he didn't know.

"Ren! I need your help to test a new 'toy' I made" Doc said, placing a hand on his friends shoulder, surprising him.

"Ah! You scared me!" Ren pouted playfully.

"Sorry, dude. Anyway, I made a new device that can shoot a net out of a gun. I need your help to test it." Doc stated, pulling out a well-crafted metal gun.

"As long as it's safe." Ren said, inspecting the new weapon.

"It won't hurt you, but you'll probably need help getting out of the net." Doc explained, whilst pressing a few buttons on the machine.

"Alright, dude. Let's get this over with." Ren said.

Doc lined up the gun perfectly and shot. The net sped towards Ren and tackled him to the floor, leaving him tangled in the thin ropes.

"Yes! It worked!" Doc shouted, grinning.

"Can you help me out now." Ren said, trying to bite through the ropes.

"Fine." Doc sighed, running over to his friend.

Doc managed to help Ren out of the net but found that the ropes had multiple bite marks and probably couldn't be used again.

"What are you two doing?" They heard a voice from behind.

"Hey Sam. We're just testing out Doc's net gun." Ren replied, grinning.

"Well, I need to talk to Ren now, so you can continue later." Sam explained.

Ren and Doc looked at each other and shrugged. Sam called for Ren once more and he ran over to join their leader.

"You know how we invited the rest of the Hermits to meet us?" Sam asked.

"Yep, and then we'll explain that it was all a big misunderstanding." Ren continued happily.

"Well... I'm actually planning on capturing them all. That's why I asked Doc to create a capture device. Although, if they don't behave, I might have to take more drastic measures..." Sam explained, continuing to walk down the path.

"What?! But they're my friends! Why would you want to hurt them?!" Ren shouted angrily.

"Come on, Ren. We've come so far together to get my 'revenge'. What's stopping you now?" Sam replied, stopping abruptly on the path. Ren stopped too, folding his arms.

"...They're still my friends though. I don't want them to go through any pain! I'm starting to see why Grian and the others don't like you!" Ren retorted angrily.

"I don't care, Ren! All I want is to kill Grian! And if a few more people die in the process, I really don't care." Sam shouted, finally snapping.

"W-what...? You...want to kill Grian?" Ren muttered in disbelief. Sam's eyes went wide realising what he had just said.

"... That's not what I meant I-" Sam started.

"Save it! I'm getting Doc and then we're leaving. Now I know why no one trusts you! Were you even controlled by Watchers?!" Ren shouted, stepping away from the bunny-eared man.

"No! I wasn't controlled by Watchers! But that doesn't matter. Grian ruined my life!" Sam explained, still screaming.

"How?! It seems that you ruined his, and you're ruining the lives of us Hermits!" Ren retorted.

"Leave then. Maybe the other Hermits won't believe you. It doesn't matter. I plan to kill all of them!" Sam said, turning away from Ren.

Ren immediately ran towards the Octagon where Doc was tweaking the same gun that he was caught in earlier.

"Doc! We have to leave! Sam's planning to kill the other Hermits! And he wasn't even controlled by the watchers! He just hurt Grian for fun! I don't know what to do..." Ren ran towards his taller friend and held him by the shoulders.

"What? Are you joking?" Doc asked, concerned.

"No, I'm not joking, dude! Sam is planning to capture and kill the other Hermits. That's why he asked you to build that net gun!" Ren continued.

"Oh no...we need to go. Pack everything up. Get as many supplies as possible. We're going to take all the weapons that Sam asked me to create and then hopefully find the Hermits before it's too late." Doc planned, already grabbing his bag from the table.

"We can just message them on the communicators!" Ren suggested, looking down, about to message his friends.

"...Dammit!...Sam took our communicators because he said he wanted to 'fix them up'" Doc explained, clearly annoyed.

"Yeah, I think it was just an excuse to steal our personal texts with the others." Ren said, helping Doc collect all the supplies.

"That doesn't matter. We know they should be at Stress' base, since Sam hasn't been around. If we start making our way there, we should meet them." Doc suggested, slinging his heavy bag over his shoulder.

"Yeah. That should work!" Ren exclaimed, feeling a little less hopeless.
