Chapter 20~ Escape

Grian stared out of the window into the dark sky as Xanthe collected together various supplies.

"Thanks for this, Xanthe..." Grian said, still watching the stars twinkle and shimmer.

"Yeah... I've never really been outside of the Void, so it'll be good for me, too. Although, helping you and your friends is probably the number one priority right now." Xanthe said, throwing his bag over his shoulder and turning to face his friend.

"...How long do you think it'll take until she notices we're gone?" Grian asked.

"40 minutes... An hour at most. We'll need to rush through the town to the cliff, where you arrived. The magic levels there are heightened so it will be less draining for you. That will take about half an hour and the spell only takes a few minutes to cast so we should be okay." Xanthe answered, standing next to Grian and looking at the familiar star patterns.

"Yeah, unless someone sees you. If they see you out of the castle, they'll immediately tell the guards and the Queen will be notified within minutes! You need a disguise..." Grian looked around the room for some fabric to cover the 6'5 Admin prince.

Eventually, he found an old cloak which had a large hood to cover Xanthe's entire face.

He slipped the cloak on and put the hood up, ready to leave.

"... Alright. Here we go. You're still good at climbing, right?" Grian asked, opening the window and sitting on the ledge, letting his legs dangle over the 30 foot drop.

"I'm still decent. I've not practiced much after you left, but I think I can do it." Xanthe answered, joining Grian on the ledge.

"Wait! I need to grab a few things first! I'll be back in a minute." Grian said abruptly, swinging his legs back inside and standing up.

He ran out of the room and towards his own. He pulled the wooden plank up once more and grabbing the items that were under the floor. He shoved the journal and emotion sphere into his satchel and closed it swiftly. He sprinted back to Xanthe's room and made his way back to the ledge, sitting down beside his friend again.

"Sorry. I just had to grab some things... You ready now?" Grian sighed, turning his head to his confused friend.

"Yeah... Let's go." Xanthe answered, lowering himself over the ledge, hanging on with his hands.

Grian followed, gripping the ledge with all his strength. He let his feet rest on a crack in the brickwork and let his hand find another ledge to grab on to. Using this method, they both managed to get down in about ten minutes.

They were both exhausted but continued, making their way to the walls that surrounded the palace.

"I'll go over first and help you after, okay?" Xanthe said, gripping the stone wall and lifting himself on top. He sat on top and reached his arms down to Grian, who grabbed Xanthe's arms and was lifted on top, instantly.

"Since when were you that strong?!" Grian whispered, vividly remembering Xanthe struggling to pick up some of the other Admins around the village.

"I don't know. Probably just good genetics or something?" Xanthe answered, jumping down onto the floor.

"I don't believe you!" Grian retorted, following his friend.

"It doesn't matter, come on!" Xanthe said, running into the marketplace.

They rushed through people, knocking a few of the various vendors accidentally during their rush. Many people shouted at them as they passed and others glared at them judgementally. Some assumed the worse and cowered away, thinking they were criminals or thieves.

They exit the market onto the main street where a flock of songbirds flew by, ruining the view of the street.

They pushed through, and made their way onto the cliff edge.

"Give me a few minutes. I need to prepare for the spell. Stand guard and look out for any Admins." Grian instructed.

"Alright." Xanthe answered, standing back to give Grian the space he needed.

Grian cast a portal as fast as he could, immediately feeling the energy drain from his body.

"Xanthe! Come on! I can't hold this open much longer!" Grian shouted, feeling weaker by the second.

Xanthe didn't have time to respond. Instead, he stepped through the portal, followed swiftly by Grian who had sweat dripping down his forehead and was panting like a dog.

The portal made a 'whoosh' noise as it closed, leaving the two stood in an empty field, seemingly far away from any civilisation.

"Whoa... Everything is so... Green." Xanthe muttered, looking around the field.

"Yeah... Welcome to Hermitcraft..." Grian said, sitting amongst the long grass.

"Are you alright? That seemed to drain a lot of energy from you..." Xanthe asked, sitting beside Grian and placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Yep. I just wasn't ready and I panicked, so the spell was ruined and now we're... here. Probably miles away from the main server!" Grian replied, resting his head on his hands anxiously.

"I'm sure it'll end up fine... Right?" Xanthe aksed glancing at Grian.

"I really, really hope so..." Grian muttered.

"...It's about midday, so we'll have a few more hours before it turns night. We should use this time to find any of your friends." Xanthe suggested, standing up.

Xanthe reached out a hand, which Grian took, standing up next to his friend.

"Let's go, then." Grian smiled, looking at the Sun, which seemed to be going down in the West, meaning the had a general idea of the direction they were facing.

"That way." Grian said, pointing in the direction opposite the Sun.

"You extra sure?" Xanthe asked, finally pulling his hood down.

"Yep. I know exactly where we're going. It might take a while but if we're fast, we can get there in a day." Grian replied, walking through the field.

"An entire day?" Xanthe said, following his friend.

"Yeah. But we'll find somewhere to rest at night and set off again early in the morning." Grian reassured.

"Alright... here we go, I guess." Xanthe murmured, continuing through the long grass.

They continued through the field for hours before find a dark-oak forest. It was beginning to get dark and they were both getting a little tired.

"We can stop here for the night." Grian said abruptly, stopping in a clearing, where they could see the dusk sky above.

"Cool. You have tents, right?" Xanthe asked, looking around for any potential mobs.

"... No... I wasn't expecting to be this far out from the main island! I'm so sorry, Xanthe..." Grian muttered, sitting on a log.

"It's fine. You can use my cloak as a blanket." Xanthe insisted, taking off the purple and gold fabric.

"But...won't you be cold?" Grian asked, reluctantly taking the hooded clothing.

"I've lived in the void during winter, so I think I can get through a night in the overworld during spring." Xanthe said, readjusting the collar on his Royal shirt.

"If you're completely fine with it... Then I suppose I could use the cloak. Thank you. " Grian said, draping the purple cloth around his shoulders.

"No problem." Xanthe smiled, joining Grian on the small log.

Grian stood up, walking towards the trees where he picked up some sticks for a fire. Xanthe saw what he was doing and helped, dropping some twigs in the centre of the clearing.
In about an hour, they had started a fire and created two piles of leaves which would serve as temporary beds.

"I'm sorry things have to be like this..." Grian said once more, staring into the night sky.

"Like what?" Xanthe asked, sitting on his own leaf pile.

"You know... Being so far away from everyone and everything. For all we know, Sam could have dug his way out of prison by now!" Grian explained, stressing every scenario possible.

"Gri, we've been through this already. Everything will be fine. It'll just take some time to reach the island and then we can ban Sam. After that, you and your friends can visit us at the palace and take part in the annual Void Ball." Xanthe grinned, knowing that the Hermits would love everything in his home.

Grian hummed in agreement and closed his eyes,"Goodnight, Xanthe." He turned onto his side and pulled the cloak over him.

"'Night, Gri." Xanthe muttered, drifting into a peaceful sleep.
