Saved
Everyone surrounded the confused and crying Nightmare, leaning against the tree stump. Dream was trying to hold back his tears, it had been so long since he's seen his brother in his normal form.
"Why should you apologize for something I did?"
Dream let of the hug, smiling like an idiot. "Because we love you and are willing to help you move on."
"But Dream, you need to know that's going to hard! Impossible even. I mean, your friends might forgive you for leaving out of this, but I mean they always do. After all, who could say no to you, they know everything about you." He was holding one of his eye sockets closed with his hands, trying to hide it from everyone. "But...how can anyone forgive me? Nightmare, the one who attacked them for years."
The two brothers faced each other, one looking away and no longer crying. "Well, I didn't tell them everything about me. And I didn't tell them everything about you."
"Wh-Why? I thought you wouldn't lie."
"Never did. I just didn't want them to get caught up in our business. If anyone was going to get you back, it was me. And we'll find a way to get through this. It might take a while, but...I believe we can fix this."
"So...you don't hate me?" Dream frowned and shook his head in denial, touching the dead tree stump. Neil started to notice the black clouds starting to dissipate, revealing the sun that has been lost for years.
"I never hated you, it was more of the opposite actually. I was stupid and arrogant to ignore your pain, and I'm sorry for that." Nightmare then smiled and scratched his head.
"Heh, I was an idiot too. To think I could hide all my pain from you was stupid. I should've trusted you, we always had each others backs."
"And we still will." The positivity guardian playfully punched his brother, both sharing a smile. He gave a small shoulder hug.
"I know we can't turn back time and fix everything that happened, but even if you changed then or now, it won't change who you really are. You are smart, and a trickster and a book lover. But most of all, you are my brother. No matter how much you try to push yourself away, I will stay by your side. I loved you then, and I'll keep loving you now." He said loud enough so everyone can hear. Neil smiled and the two guardians shared the same happiness for the two.
Slowly, Nightmare wrapped one arm around and put his down the other. Embracing the hug, Dream pulled away to look his brother in the eye. He was surprised to see what happened to his eyes. The right eye maintained the deep purple color from their childhood. However, the left one was a beautiful shade of deep blue, just like when he was in his goop form. His left eye was a permanent blue color.
"Thank you Dream, for always believing in me. Even when I told not to." Silence for a moment. "Is my left eye that bad?"
Lanny was the one who interrupted this time. "Actually, it looks good for you. It's a reminder to all of us, and a mark of a new life for you." Nightmare twiddled his fingers quickly.
"Uh yeah? Your mom's sister, aren't you? I'm so sorry for everything." She shook it off.
"It's okay. I'm really sorry for attacking you earlier. It was a really bad mistake." Quetz snickered a little, catching everyone's attention.
"This family has a habit of making poor decisions."
"Should I blast you with magic?" The two brothers laughed at their family's teasing, Neil patting Nightmare on the back. Even though the guardian didn't formally meet him, he knew he was a good person.
"Why don't we go home everyone? We can talk about the future and our healing." Everyone nodded, but Nightmare raised his hand politely.
"Could we stay just for a little bit? I want to pay my last respects to mom before we...before I move on." Quetz nodded as all of them gathered around the tree stump.
One by one, each person talked to the memorial, letting all their feelings out and paying respects. Their were laughs and deep conversations, some even started tearing up. Nightmare took the longest, letting everything he always wanted to say to his mother out. Even she wasn't alive, he could feel her power inside him, and it made him feel safe. As the last words were spoken, all of them put a flower on the plague stone and nodded to each other. They touched shoulders, and Dream's soul lightened at seeing Nightmare's expression. He was smiling. He was happy.
Happy that he could move on. That family was ready to support him through the toughest of times, and he felt safe for once. The sun beamed down on them as they teleported away.
