Flashback

I was leaning against the tree, staring at peaceful stars of the night sky. I did love the night. Dream was sleeping on my lap, since he exhausted himself from running around. I smiled at him; it was nice he was getting some good sleep in a while. But at the same time, I wished he was awake. It was lonely watching the stars on my own, even if I enjoyed the silence.

"What is wrong Nightmare?"

I jumped and stared at the tree. Mom was awake.

"Mom, you're awake. I didn't expect you to-"

"I never fall asleep sweetie. I always watch over you two."

I felt embarrassed not remembering the fact our mother was fused to the tree. Usually she's so silent, one couldn't tell she was there at all.

"Are you going to tell me what's wrong?" She asked. I tried to sound confident.

"Nothing's wrong mom."

That didn't work.

"You know I can tell when you're lying."

"Y-You can?"

"I'm your mother. I know everything about you." I sighed, gently laying Dream on the grass.

"Is there anyone like us?"

"What?"

"I mean, not like people and the other mortals. I've heard plenty of stories from you. I mean, is there anyone like US? Guardians?"

Mom didn't speak for several minutes. Did I upset her? I tend to do that sometimes, and I always felt guilty. However, when she spoke again, it sounded genuinely soft and hurtful.

"I wasn't the only guardian before you two came. I had two siblings. You haven't met them yet, and they have their own trees to guard too." I was curious by mom's story, so I leaned against her bark, waiting to hear more. I swear I felt like a child waiting for his favorite snack.

"Really? Who are they?"

"Lanny, my sister, is the guardian of the tree of magic. She gives magic to every living being in existence, which includes you two as well."

"Us? Magic? But, I've never used magic before." I interrupted.

"Don't worry, you'll figure it out eventually. I know you will. Anyways, there's also my brother. I haven't talked with him in a long time. He guards the tree and life. With the help of both of them, I fused my energy and created you two."

"They helped create me and Dream?" I asked.

"Yes."

"That is so cool." I smiled, my mom content watching over us. I guess it wasn't as bad when your own mother talks to you as well. "I wonder if we'll ever get to meet them."

"Maybe you will one day Nightmare. But now's not the time." I could feel her presence starting to fade.

"Wait mom."

"Hm~?" She came back.

"Could you stay a little longer? I'm not tired yet, and I don't want to be alone."

"Okay." She agreed.

We spent the next few hours talking throughout the night, slowly I fell asleep with mom and brother beside me. Dream woke up the next morning with me passed out against the tree. I only remembered hearing him giggling as he laid right next to me.

End of flashback

How I wish we could go back to that time. I thought, watching the black background around me. I could make out silhouettes of parts of my soul, but nothing else. There is no star here at all. But I still have my brother, the brightest star of all of them. I just want him to come back.
