Chapter 27 (The End)
Georgia spent the rest of Friday making sure that the party kicked off without any problems. She kept her eyes open for Ewan but he was nowhere and everywhere. She didn't like to think that he was avoiding her but that was how it felt. Every time she caught a glimpse of him he would smile and as she made her way towards him, ready to be in his arms at last, he would disappear.
The caterer had found her and spent half an hour apologizing for Molly and promising that it would never happen again. The poor man looked as if he was going to drop at any minute from nerves. Georgia had spent the better part of an hour assuring him that as long as the party was a success he would have a good reference.
The few times that Georgia had caught sight of Diana she had been with her friends, a thoughtful expression on her face as she watched them interacting with each other. The one time their eyes met they had exchanged smiles but she hadn't tried to seek Georgia out again.
By Saturday morning, when she still hadn't managed to corner Ewan, she was close to a full on meltdown, she thought about throwing a tantrum like Diana where something got broken and there were tears but commonsense would reassert itself and she would carry on as usual.
Shortly after lunch, while everyone was busy with their afternoon entertainment of a picnic and lawn games, Georgia made herself take a walk. The beautiful sunshine was warm on her skin and she kicked off her shoes letting the grass tickle her toes. She was on the opposite side of the property from everyone else so she was able let her hair down and not be noticed.
"You look much happier than the last time I saw you." Aunt Priscilla's voice carried across the stretch of grass from the terrace.
Georgia looked over at her and smiled as she walked in her direction. "I am." When she reached her aunt's side she gave her a hug and then walked with her to one of the benches under a pergola covered in summer roses.
"Ewan looked much happier when I saw him yesterday as well. Did you work out your ridiculous problems?"
Georgia couldn't help the frown. "No, he's avoiding me."
"Is he?" Priscilla sounded bored which meant she was anything but, she knew what Ewan was up to no doubt. When Georgia tried to meet her eyes she looked away and knowing that her aunt was a stubborn woman she let it go and settled in for a chat. "Are you enjoying yourself?"
"No, not particularly, I've remembered why I left this life so many years ago. I don't like these people."
"Maybe you just don't know them?"
"The younger ones perhaps, but I know the older ones and I'm not shocked to discover that they haven't changed at all in thirty years. You would think that a certain maturity would have set in but no, they are all just as full of themselves now as they were then."
"I have a favor to ask of you," Georgia said as she picked a rose next to her and raised it to her nose while she considered how to phrase it.
"You want me to take Diana back with me?" Priscilla nodded. "Ewan asked me the same thing. You both think alike I'll give you that. It will make it easier to raise your children."
Georgia smiled at the thought of children. Lots of little Ewans if she had anything to say about it. She was so lost in her wonderful day dream that her aunt caught her off guard with her next remark.
"I was surprised when Sylvia called me, but I was even more surprised when she told me that you had fallen in love with Ewan. He was a normal child, full of energy and devilish sense of humor, but I had heard stories of what or who he had become as a man and I couldn't marry the two of you in my mind. He sounded so very different than Scott."
Georgia smiled and nodded. "He is. He's so different that I sometimes wonder, if Scott had lived, would we have grown with each other."
"That's not a fair question. Loosing Scott affected you greatly, had you not lost him you wouldn't be who you are today. You would, possibly, not have been strong enough to handle Ewan."
Georgia gave a very unladylike like snort. "You mean strong enough to survive Ewan."
Priscilla looked a little taken aback. "Do you really have to survive him?"
"Ewan is..." She searched for the words as she smelled the rose. "Seeing, hearing, even smelling him is like a shock to my system. It's like being on a roller coaster. The sight of him is a subtle quickening, his voice is like a jerking turn and his touch is like a fall from the highest peak. It's scary and thrilling at the same time. It was never like that with Scott. With Scott it was warm, tender, and comfortable."
"Aren't you worried about it wearing off with Ewan? The roller coaster always ends." Priscilla watched her niece closely as she weighed her answer.
"No, It's Ewan and once I have a few little Ewans the ride will change completely." Georgia knew that it would never end. His waking up beside her, sharing a meal, or even entering a room made her heart full.
"You're probably right about that, and I'm sure Diana will add lots of extra dips and turns along the way." They were both silent as they sat there in the warm sunshine with the smell of roses surrounding them.
"When are you going back?" Georgia asked, hating to see her aunt return home too soon.
"That depends on you and Ewan and what you decide. I'll want to be at your wedding."
The words made Georgia's heart soar.
"And Diana, if she's coming back with me then she might need some time."
Georgia thought back to her and Diana's previous conversation. "No, I think she's ready to leave tomorrow."
They sat silently for a while longer before Georgia realized the time and had to make her way to the kitchen to see about dinner, she helped the orchestra that had been booked for the evening find their spot and set-up, then she had to go and change.
As she looked through her clothes, she was about to reach for the dress that Ewan had bought her but at the last minute she changed her mind and reached for her red suit. The suit that she had worn at the start of it all. She took her time dressing, making sure her hair was neat and her glasses were in place before she headed to the terrace to make sure that the guests had everything that they needed.
The party had begun, the guests were slowly arriving and with drinks in hand, no one paid attention to Georgia standing on the sidelines checking and double checking everything. After this evening she was done she was no longer an employee of Ewan Mailler.
She wandered to the edge of the lawn watching the couples dance and mingle. Dinner would be buffet style and it wasn't set to be served for another half hour but the hors d'oeuvres were going over well.
Georgia was just beginning to relax when the first pop overhead happened. She jumped and looked up to see the sky explode with light. Fireworks. She hadn't ordered any. She began looking for Ewan worried that he was outside. Who had ordered them and why?
She scanned the crowd and caught Ewan standing in the middle of everyone and while they were looking up he was looking at her. Watching her as she searched for him. He was dressed in black tie and looked impeccable.
When her eyes landed on him she couldn't help herself, there was a force that pulled her towards him as his hand reached out and took hers.
"I didn't order any fireworks," she said as he pulled her to him. He took off her glasses and put them in his pocket before his hands clasped behind her back pulling her close.
"No, I did. I thought that it was time that they meant something good again."
"But the noise, the light." Georgia jerked as another loud boom of a ten pounder exploded above their heads.
"All I see is you and all I hear is you."
Georgia's breath quickened as the roller coaster plummeted down the peak.
Oblivious of everyone else, he pulled her close and took her lips with his. The kiss was tender and slow, he wasn't in a rush. Georgia's knees gave way and she wrapped her hands around his neck as the kiss deepened.
This was exactly like what had happened that night she had left. Forcing herself to pull away she looked at him. "Why?"
"Because having you pulled away by Craig that night is my biggest regret. I love you Georgia Dawson and to let him pull you away that night was..." he paused resting his head against her forehead, pausing as he gathered his thoughts.
They were only aware of each other and took no notice of the stares that they were getting.
"You saved me Georgia Dawson. You walked into my life and pulled me out of a hell I had created for myself. You are my light, my heart, and I cannot and will not live without you."
How on earth could Aunt Priscilla think that their roller coaster would ever end? All she would have to do is remember this moment.
"You saved me that night and I sent you away, and I'm doing my best to make that up to you now. He let her go and reached into his pocket pulling out a ring box. He opened it and dropped to both his knees.
"Georgia Dawson, my love, in front of everyone here, will you marry me."
"Ewan get off your knees," she said between her tears of joy.
"Not until you answer me."
Georgia looked at the ring, it wasn't showy, it was a sapphire set in gold and surrounded with diamonds and looked to be an antique. It was perfect. "Yes, Ewan Mailler, I will marry you but only if it's very soon."
He rose and took her in his arms again. "The sooner the better." He kissed her again and the crowd started clapping and cheering. "Take that boogie woman."
Ewan had planned it all. The crowd, the fireworks, the acceptance. No one would object to her now. It would be the talk of the town and those that were there to witness it would be considered part of the "in" crowd. He had made sure that she started her new life as Mrs. Ewan Mailler strong and she had no doubt that he would keep it that way.
It was a good thing that she loved roller coasters because she was in for one hell of a ride.
