Chapter 26

Diana had disappeared after lunch, most likely to get ready for the party and Samantha proved to be a great help.  She was quick and willing to help in any way she could. Georgia could tell she was full of questions since she kept looking at her curiously as they worked.

"Ms. Georgia?" There was a knock at the door and Cameron was standing there with a tea tray looking upset.

"Oh, Cameron thank you, I can't speak for Samantha but I'm parched." She rose from the table where they had been working and moved to the center of the room where Cameron set the tray.

"Ms. Georgia, I'm so sorry about earlier. I've been trying to tell everyone that Molly doesn't know what she's talking about but..." She shrugged.

Georgia put her arm around her shoulders and gave her a squeeze.  "Don't worry about it. In a few days I'll be gone and no one will remember any of it."

"But they will, they remember what happened last time and that's been a year ago.  I feel sorry for Ms. Diana, what Molly is saying isn't right." She looked up at her imploring her to do something.

"Ewan will handle it Cameron. Just keep your head down and stop trying to defend me and Diana, O.K.? I don't want anything said about you next, and you know she'll say something if she feels threatened."

Cameron nodded. "But you told Mr. Mailler to leave it and not do anything."

Georgia smiled sadly.  "Since when does Mr. Mailler listen to anyone but himself?"

"He always listens to you, and he always does what you ask."

Georgia started to walk Cameron across the room towards the door. Was that true? Had he decided to choose his business instead of her like she had asked him to? There was something in what he had said earlier that was nibbling at the back of her brain, something she hadn't taken the time nor effort to search out but she was sure on this, he would intervene. She wasn't going to argue with Cameron about it though. Giving her another squeeze, she told her to hurry back to the kitchen and keep an eye on things until she had a chance to look things over.

When Georgia turned back to the sofa Samantha had already poured them some tea and was stirring hers while she sat and watched Georgia silently. Georgia took hers and leaned back into the sofa sipping the warm liquid and thinking so deeply that she forgot that Samantha was there until she spoke. "So do you think Mr. Mailler will say anything?"

Georgia paused before she answered, gathering her thoughts. "Yes, Molly's not used to keeping to the shadows. She likes to be the center of attention, which is why she likes to make up stories about people. The more outrageous the story the more attention she gets. She also fancies herself in love with Ewan."

"How come you sometimes call Mr. Mailler Mr. Mailler and then other times you call him Ewan?" She looked away from Georgia as soon as she asked the question.

Georgia couldn't help but think that she had picked just the right question to ask.  It was so simple and seemed impersonal but she knew the answer would have to be personal. "It's complicated and in the end it really doesn't matter," she hedged.

"Yes, it does. I have to agree with Cameron.  I saw Mr. Mailler cave to you in the dining room. You stared him down and won. Granted, I've only worked for the man for a little under a year but I have never seen anyone win against him."

Georgia couldn't help but think of the earlier scene. "He wasn't a very good looser was he?" She smiled as she remembered his outburst. "But he did get his answer, he just found another way around the problem, he always gets what he wants in the end."

"Always?"

Georgia looked at Samantha as she asked the question. Suddenly, she remembered the comment that Ewan had made in his office. What if he had meant something totally different then a warning?  What if he meant it as an assurance? Had he worked out the issue with Rossini and Isobel? Had he won that battle too?

She had been miserable the last few days thinking that she had lost Ewan, was she really going to go through life living with that hurt in her heart?  Could she? No!

"Yes, always," Georgia said, a giddy smile covering her face as she thought about a future with Ewan. She had been making it too hard.  He would always win, he would always find a way around the challenges life presented to him, it was who he was so why was she fighting him on this? Habit maybe, she had gotten so used to the idea that they couldn't be together that she wouldn't accept that they could? Her head was spinning.

As if he had heard her calling, Ewan and Craig entered the room. He was wearing a frown as he was reading something on his phone.

He looked up at her briefly then did a double take as he noted her smile.

"Ms. Dawson, you look extremely pleased with yourself."

"Oh, I am Mr. Mailler. I'm pleased with life at the moment."

His eyes narrowed as he looked at her, crossing his arms and making his stance wide, he dug in waiting for her to continue. When she just kept smiling at him like a fool, he took off his glasses and folded them as he watched her.

"Samantha?" he finally asked.

"I'm not sure sir, I asked her if you always won and she said yes always and then she started smiling." Samantha looked away from Ewan and towards Georgia, wondering if there was something else that she was missing.

Ewan's stern expression broke into a joyful smile as he stared at her.  Oh how she loved his smile. She rose from her seat and took a step towards him and he held out his hand.  Georgia was just about to take it when the Cameron burst into the room.

"Please Ms. Georgia, Diana and Molly, oh please, just hurry!" Cameron raced from the room and everyone followed down the central hall and through the ballroom to the terrace that surrounded the back of the house.

Diana and Molly were both there, standing as far apart as they could get. Georgia immediately went to step between the two but Ewan reached out and grabbed her pulling her back. "Diana?" Ewan asked, keeping his gaze steady on his sister who was so still and pale that she seemed to be a statue.

Georgia had focused on Molly who was breathing hard and was a mottled red color from her neck up, she was standing behind a chair for protection.

"Why Molly, why are you saying such vicious things? Why are you trying to hurt so many people?" Diana asked, tears in her voice. Georgia shook off Ewan's hand and went to stand next to Diana putting her arm around her waist and drawing her near as she spoke.

Molly's face turned even uglier if that was possible, "It's her fault." Molly motioned her head towards Georgia. "If she hadn't of been around he would have noticed me. He would have fallen for me, not her." The words were spat at her.

"Even if that were true, which it's not, how are the horrible things you're saying going to help your situation?" Georgia asked calmly.

"Oh, I don't care to help my situation, I hope to hurt yours.  You'll never be accepted in their world and what little chance you stood I've now taken from you." An evil grin spread across Molly's face as she said the words.

"How, by saying that Diana and I are lovers? By saying that I was carrying Ewan's child and had it aborted when he paid me to? These are the most outrageous lies and everyone who knows the Maillers will know it's not true." Georgia shook her head as she watched her, "Besides your lies lack common sense, anyone would tell you that I could get more money from Ewan by keeping a baby then by getting rid of it."

"Georgia my love, now is not the time to be reasonable.  I doubt that Ms. Harold here will appreciate it." She and Ewan exchanged a glance at his words of love to her, the tense silence surrounding them. His mouth twitched in amusement before he turned towards Molly. When he saw the threatening look she was shooting Georgia the amusement faded and the warrior appeared.

"Ms. Harold." His tone was low and very menacing.  Georgia felt a chill run through Diana. He was speaking softly but the hardness in his voice couldn't be missed. "I'll say this as simply as possible, you are messing with me and mine." He took a step towards Molly.

"You have distressed my sister and you have attacked the woman I love. Your made up lies are malicious slander and I have a house full of staff that can attest to that, but I will also say this," he took another step towards the cowering girl who had turned very pale, "I have loved Georgia from the moment I first saw her and, until reminded of the fact today, I didn't even remember your name. But I promise you I will remember it now and I will make damn sure that everyone one else knows it as well." He took one more step. "Now, I suggest that you leave."

Molly was rooted to the spot, her face had gone from pale back to red at his last words.

"NOW!" Ewan bellowed at Molly's lack of movement. Everyone jumped and Molly most of all as she turned and ran from the terrace. "Craig, let's go find the caterer and have talk with him." Ewan said, turning around all business.

He gave Georgia a meaningful look that promised her the world, there would be time enough later; then he approached Diana. She had hidden her face in Georgia's shoulder when he had started talking. "Diana, look at me?" he said softly.

She looked at him with tears streaming down her face. He tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Are you alright?"

She just looked at him and started to cry all over again. "I tried to deal with it so Georgia wouldn't have to," she said in between sobs.

Ewan pulled her into his arms and she cried even harder as he held her close.  "Go with Georgia. You have to get ready for your party. I'll see you later and we'll talk, alright?"

Diana gave a few more sniffles and then pulled away.

"I'll handle everything." He motioned for Craig and they were gone.

The show had to go on, and Georgia was in charge of making sure that it did.
