CHAPTER TEN: THE BOY WITH THE COLOR CHANGING EYES
Fable Leon was never going to be the same.
As her friends watched as the cop car pulled away from the scene of the crime, Ender Wildes rocked back and forth on his heels. He was concealed in the darkness, but just for a moment, time slowed, and as he looked at the car that held Fable in it, his eyes met her glowing grey ones.
"This isn't good," Ender muttered to himself, and he looked down towards the crowd of people that were all surrounding the small Inn.
His eyes drifted to where Pandora Pedersen stood in the crowd, with her right hand man, Bishop McCalmont, by her side. He was able to recognize two other members of the Ice Oak Coven, dark haired and somber eyed Visha Candice, and the troublemaking experiment August Meadow.
Witches always meant trouble, and the fact that one of their own had died, Ender knew exactly how this was going to end. He took a step closer to where Pandora was standing, and like she could sense him, she turned on her heels.
He knew exactly what was going through her head, and he ran a hand through his hair, taking a step back.
Remembering the last time the two of them were in a situation just like this.
Ender felt himself shudder, and he crossed his arms in front of him, rocking back on his heels.
"Ender, what are you doing here?" Smith Graves asked as he walked up to the leader of the Luminaar Clan, and Ender shook his head.
"Two of them are dead," Ender murmured, looking around the crowd, trying to see what could have happened.
Ramona Balfour's eyes met his with an icy glare. Ender knew that she couldn't have recognized him, the last time anyone had seen him was over a hundred years ago, but bad habits die hard.
Smith laid a hand on his friend's shoulder, and Ender shrugged it off, looking back at his friend.
"They've arrested a girl, a women, for their murder, but she didn't do it," Ender told his friend, fidgeting with his hands as he looked back at the crowd. "It was a Dragon and Witch, Smith."
"This isn't good, yes, but how do you know that the girl didn't do it?" Smith asked, and his friend threw his hands up in the air.
"I, I can't explain it, I just know," Ender snapped, running his hand through his dark hair again. He looked over to his friend, and took a step closer to him. "When have I ever lead you wrong, my friend?"
Smith shook his head, and Ender held in a breath, waiting for what his friend would say. "Okay, I will help you figure out what happened, and prove that she's innocent, if only to stop an all out war." Ender gave his friend a grim, but thankful, smile, and pulled the long haired boy close to him.
"One of these days we will be able to right all of these wrongs," Ender murmured, and Smith nodded his head.
"One of these days you'll find someone who is able to convince you that it was an honest mistake," Smith countered, and Ender shrugged his shoulders sadly.
"Keep the faith?" Ender asked, and Smith nodded his head, taking Ender's hand in his, shaking it.
"Keep the faith," Smith responded, as was the custom between the boy boys, ever since they were children. And just like that, Smith was gone, disappearing into the darkness around them.
Ender Wildes turned back to the crowd of people, and his eyes drifted to the group of friends that had arrived with Fable.
He knew their names, all of them, and he knew almost everything about them, for the same reason he knew Fable's name, and almost everything about her.
Because everytime when he closed his eyes he would see her, see her life, her world. He knew her friends, he knew how she felt about them, and he knew that she would do anything for them.
And he knew that when she found the bodies, her first thought was of them.
The crowd slowly departed, Fable's friends returned to the inside of the hotel, escorted by Doroth Byers, who had found Fable standing over the bodies. Bowie Bond trailed behind the werewolf girl, visibly shaking.
There were three things that Ender Wildes was absolutely certain of.
The first, the Fable Leon was unequivocally innocent. She had not committed the murders, and was potentially facing a lifetime in jail for being framed. And that she believed that she was never going to see her friends again.
The second, that this was the very kind of act that would spark the soft fires of rivalry into the fiery infernos of a war between the Ice Oak Coven and the Luminaar Clan. Pandora Pedersen would never let another one of hers die in vain, and Ramona Balfour had lost too many people to the Ice Oak Coven to let something like this slide. War was on the horizon.
The third, and most important thing, that if Fable Leon wanted to get out of jail, free and alive, she was going to need her friends to help her on the outside. And that she was going to need someone protecting her on the inside.
Ender Wildes flew off as the sun rose over Merfeu, and he knew that nothing would ever be the same.
And it was all his fault.
