A Bottle and the River
Every time she came to town we fell into a heat
Till she took it all away, disappearing down the street
I walked the plank a time or two drowning in self-pity
Then made my way to higher ground and lost myself in the city
She was kind and she was cruel, the final blow delivered
I made my peace and found a little place upon the river
Hurricanes and astral rains and birds of every feather
Aggravate and agitate but in the end, life comes together
Buried deep when you're asleep, hidden by the day
The blues take hold disguised in shades of gray
She tells you she once loved you and you know for sure she did
And never fails to remind you we're no longer kids
Back in the city
Every time her song comes on be sure to pay attention
To the melody, but also to the verse
Remember her sweet voice, her loving eyes a glitter
And carry on through the night with a bottle and the river
