Unknown Flowers

Anne and Shirley loved to pick flowers, and with them, they would make things like flower crowns, bookmarks, and much more.

One day, they met a wrinkled old woman in the woods. The girls had gone to the woods to try and find some new flowers to take home, as they had started to lose interest in the common roses or sunflowers they would normally find.

They both noticed that the old woman was holding a basket. And when they looked closer they saw that the basket held the most beautiful flowers they had ever seen.

"I would give anything to own flowers these beautiful!" exclaimed Anne while Shirley nodded her head vigorously in agreement.

"Anything?" the old woman repeated in a questioning tone.

"Yes. Anything." both girls exclaimed in unison.

"Very well then." the woman said as she handed the basket to them with a grin.

     "You may have them."

Both girls were surprised that the woman had given it to them without a price attached. But they shook it off, took the basket of flowers, and ran back home in delight. Both of them were eager to show their 'treasure' to their parents.

But when they stepped into the house, their parents were nowhere to be found.

"Maybe mother and father are out running errands?" says Shirley.

"Yes, maybe they are. Come, let's take a look at our lovely new flowers whilst we wait," replies Anne.

     So the girls wait.

      And wait...

     And wait...

But, their parents still haven't come home.

The girls are starting to get very worried when suddenly, they hear a knock at the door.

"Do you reckon that's mother and father at the door?" asks Shirley in a concerned tone.

"Mother and father would have unlocked the door by now..." answers Anne.

The knocking subsides, but then it is quickly replaced by a loud rattling. It is the rattling of someone trying to open the door.

"FOOLISH CHILDREN" a shrill voice echoed throughout the whole house.

"DID YOU REALLY THINK THAT I WOULD JUST GIVE YOU SOMETHING WITHOUT TAKING ANYTHING IN RETURN?" the loud voice asks.

"What are you talking about?" Anne asks loudly.

"WHERE DO YOU SUPPOSE YOUR PARENTS ARE?"

"Ohno... what have we done?..." cries Shirley, tears fill her eyes. She clings onto Anne just as the tears start to spill onto her cheeks.

At that moment the front door is thrown aside and the old woman the girls had met in the woods walks in.

"Please... give us our parents back..." the girls pleaded.

The old lady looks at them with a sympathetic expression and then bursts out laughing. The laugh was shrill and eerie. Like fingernails to a chalkboard...

Then the woman began to morph from a sweet-looking old woman to a frail ugly lady with a rotten face and greasy hair.

     "What... are you?..."

"I'm a witch, darling," the woman says with a wicked smile, revealing her disgusting yellow teeth.

"Please... just give us our parents back!" the girls cry.

     "Fine."

The witch reaches out to touch both the girl's faces with her skeleton-like hands, stroking them gently.

     "But on one condition~"

     "What condition?..." ask the girls.

The witch leans over to them with a cruel smile and whispers the condition to them.

     "Alright." the girls say.

"Anything to get out parents back..."

                                                                              * * * * * * * * * * *

The witch morphs back into an old woman, she picks up her flower basket and leaves the house just as a married couple arrives at the front door.

The witch then heads into the woods holding her flower basket and two new flowers to add to her collection...

The End.
