So what If the reason why Steven was Turning Pink was because of pink herself. This might not be accurite but YOLO.

So In one of the episodes Rose says "That would be me loving you" what if she was dissapointed. She might have been dissapointed on how fast that people are moving on, REMEMBER everyone moved on in a way in a matter of 16 years or less. To gems that's not anything really. "I could do that standing on my head *clown sounds*" I have no Idea why that popped up in my head but yeah, If thats not the case its either the Thingy that Spinel Used.

 Or just Steven growing up. We all do that, We all turn pink and basically kill people and bring them back to life, that's what we do!
