A Broken Hourglass

The sand particles escape past my fingers,
Falling in their subtle velocity,
Eager to join their brethren
In the spaces between spaces.

I clench my fist tight
For may they yet remain in the confines of my grasp.
But against my will, they plummet,
Caught in that wild collection of infinity.

Such small particles are they -
I would have tried to hold them tighter
If only I knew I'd been holding onto diamonds.
