Say, "Have you considered: if the Qur'an was from Allah, and you disbelieved in it while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar and believed while you were arrogant... ?" Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Suratul Al-Ahqaf, Ayah 10
Ibn Abbaas may Allah be pleased with him, Mujaahid, AdDhahhak, Qatadah, Ikrimah, Yusuf ibn Abdullah Ibn Salam and Malik ibn Anas; all are of the view that the witness is Abdullah ibn Salam.
Malik said, from Abi Nnadhr from Aamir ibn Saad, from his father who said, “I have not heard the prophet peace be upon him telling anyone walking on the Earth that he is among the inhabitants of Jannah except Abdullaah ibn Salam, May allah be pleased with him. Narrated by Bukhariy and Muslim.
Abdullah Ibn Salam, sat on the old arm chair in his verandah. As he glorified Allah, his thoughts drifted back to his past.
Abdullah, an Israeli old man who reverted to Islam since he was a teenager. He came from a strict Jewish community, his father being the leader. As a young boy he had witnessed two of their folks burnt alive, only because they had reverted. That had always troubled his little mind then, and it made him curious, as to why the pair sacrificed their lives and abstained from reverting back to Jewism even when they were given the opportunity.
When he was seventeen, he heard his people planning the persecution of a certain man who was preaching Islam, “We will never tolerate that, any other religion but Islam.” The elders said. “We had offered him gifts and power yet he refused, now prison will be his best abode, since we want him to have a slow death” they spoke with evil.
This hostility made him more and more interested in Islam, and before he knew anything, he had already fallen in love with it. He was amazed on how Muslims protected their faith and neither wealth nor death was sufficient to force them to abandon it.
He decided to search for the Muslim preacher, and hear what he has to say, if he likes it, he will tell him of their plans, and if he doesn’t, then let him meet what he deserves. Abdullah, secretly made his plans and met that preacher. He introduced himself and told him of his need to know Islam. The preacher solely agreed and answered all his questions. He was more amazed on how he trusted him and taught him everything despite the fact that his father was his enemies’ leader, he asked him, “Don’t you fear that I was sent as a spy?”
This preacher looked at him for a few seconds and Abdullah thought that he will chase him away, then he spoke, “Son I believe in a Lord who created me and all my enemies. Your father may be above me, but my Lord is above him. And whatever was meant for me will never miss me, and for me to be killed, is not a punishment but a great honor that I may reach the state of martyrdom. And wherever you are I want you to remember this. My Prophet and yours taught us that whoever fears Allah will never fear anyone, and whoever doesn’t fear Allah fears all.”
Abdullah who went by the name Benjamin by then left the man with a heavy heart.ķ
That night he couldn’t sleep, he kept on thinking of what he heard that day. He wasn’t sure yet but one thing he knew, he loved and respected both the preacher and Islam and he was going to do anything to defend them, whether he reverted or not.
The following day, he visited the preacher again and told him of all the enemies’ plans. He was surprised to see his response as he smiled and performed prostration, he later raised his hands and supplicated, “O Allah, my enemies have gathered against me, but you are the Disposer of All my affairs. And Sufficient you are for me. Please protect me and grant me steadfastness, and if you had decreed that I do go to prison then bless me and grant me Sabr. I love you O my Lord, everyday I love you more, Please love me back.” Abdulhaleem, the preacher, ended his prayer with tear-soaked beard.
AbduLlah was so taken aback, he had never witnessed such devotion. He was ready to become a muslim after this. He only had one question though, “Please tell me how you became a Muslim?”.
“My devoted houseboy who was a Palestinian always used to persuade me to revert, he said I was kind unlike all the Jews he knew, I didn’t like to disappoint him then so I would just reply, ‘one day I will’. Until that day he recited to me a verse about Our Prophet’s companion who was a Jewish and he reverted to Islam bearing witness that the Quran is true. I knew very little about Islam then, but this companion Abdullah ibn Salam’s story convinced me that he did the right thing and my heart wanted to revert too and so I did”
That was all that AbduLlah wanted to hear and more. Not only had he found conviction of this religion but he also found a name, “AbduLlah Ibn Salaam”. “Please help me become a Muslim and teach me that verse about the Jewish companion. I want it to be the first verse I learn from the Qur-an.”
The coming weeks passed, as Abdullah kept his reversion a secret. He knew better than to fall prey in the hands of the predator whom he called dad. With each day that passed he felt the sweetness of faith more, as he learnt about Bilal Ibn Rabah, Abdullah Ibn Mas’oud and all the other early companions who underwent immense torture may Allah be pleased with them all, he yearned to announce his Islam and spread its teachings.
But Abdulhaleem asked him to stay low. “You are still young, live and spread Allah’s light among mankind” he would tell Abdullah.
He kept on learning and practicing in secret, until one day, as he sat in his room reciting Qur-an on his prayer mat, suddenly, the door was open, Abdullah was greatly shocked, he had locked his door, or so he thought.
He completed the Ayah he was reciting, and turned back holding his Qur-an firmly, ready to protect in case any harm was intended towards it.
The guest slowly stepped into his room, and for what seemed like a million years, the pair stared at each other until Abdullah lowered his gaze and muttered with all respect, “Mother.”
The Adhan called and Abdullah woke up from his deep thoughts, he mumbled Alhamdulillaah.
And We will have removed whatever is within their breasts of resentment, [while] flowing beneath them are rivers. And they will say, "Praise to Allah, who has guided us to this; and we would never have been guided if Allah had not guided us. Certainly the messengers of our Lord had come with the truth." And they will be called, "This is Paradise, which you have been made to inherit for what you used to do."
Suratul Al-A'raf, Ayah 4tu
Indeed He deserves all praise for guiding him to the straight path and saving him from his enemies.
