15: The Heir (I)
Reuben's POV
This can't be true, is it?
How can life be this cruel? When everything is just starting to get back to places, how can it all be taken away from me again?
I've got a son now. Does that even make sense?
I sat on my desk, staring at the address scribbled on the paper. A week has passed since Claire showed up unexpectedly and turned my life into a bundle of questions which have no answers at all.
"Reuben are you listening?" Kaesy's voice interrupted my thoughts.
"I'm sorry. What were you saying?" I said and cleared my throat.
"The contract with the Voulmort Group is scheduled to be signed tomorrow after lunch, your meeting with the chairman of Baleastock industry has---"
Kaesy stopped mid sentence, she must have noticed that I wasn't really paying attention. She let out a sigh.
"Reuben, I know how you're feeling." Kaesy closed the file in her hand. "I know it's hard for you. I know that you've got responsibilities and I don't blame you for anything that has happened. Reuben, I'll always support your every step an-and so in future whatever decision you make I-I'll understand."
"What do you mean whatever decision I make." I rose from my seat and walked towards her.
"In the future even if you-we are not together--" Kaesy was almost in tears.
"For God's sake, do you think I'll ever leave you?" I cupped her face."Listen, Kaesy I don't love her anymore. I love you and if you think I'll ever go back to her that is total bullshit."
I pulled her closer and snuggled her and as Kaesy's sweet scent entered my nostrils, I felt a little relief made its way to my heavy heart. It was good to be near her.
"Reuben," Kaesy said, "You know we can go and visi--t..." she trailed off.
"There's no one I should visit." I retreated and went towards the window.
"Reuben, he's your son."
"Son? We don't even know if she's speaking the truth." I protested.
"Wh-what if," Kaesy mumbled, "she wasn't lying, will you still not see him?"
I remained silent. How can I answer her when I had been asking myself the same question. This didn't felt good. I was confused.
"Call me if you need anything." Kaesy excited the room.
I heared her close the door behind her, slowly her footsteps faded away through the hallway.
I stood there staring outside the window for a very long time. Everyone else's life looks easy, extremely easy, except mine. God! What am I suppose to do?
The vibration of my cellphone broke my thoughts and shook me back to my sad reality, not that my thoughts were anything better than the real world,"Hello," I answered the call.
"The test result is positive sir," the caller replied.
"Positive?"
"Yes, sir. He's your son."
"Did you double check it?"
"Yes,sir. There's no mistake," the caller replied with certainty, "Anything else, sir?"
"No, that's all." I ended the call and without any second thought I grabbed my keys and rushed out of my cabin.
The parking lot was silent and empty unlike my head that was screaming and jammed with lot of questions, uncertainty and anger, which I was not quite sure whom to blame. But one thing is sure that I will not allow my own son to live without knowing me, without a father.
I entered my car and started the engine when suddenly someone pulled open the door and entered the car.
"Kaesy? Wh-what are you doing?"
"It's obvious. I'm coming with you."
"Where?"
"To see your son. Isn't that where you're going?"
"Kaesy, you don't have to do this." I took her hand in mine."I don't want you to get hurt."
"I'll be alright." She smiled reassuringly. "Now let's go. We don't want to delay this, do we?"
I followed the GPS and took every turn on the road. Meanwhile Kaesy kept peering through the window into the street.
"Do you want to stop somewhere?" I asked.
"No, just keep driving." She gestured with her hand, continuing to peer out through the window.
"Oka--"
"Wait! Stop here." She spoke up immediately making me to hit the breaks fiercely jolting the car to a stop.
"There? A toy store?"
"You don't intend to go empty handed," she raised a brow.
She was right but I was in no mood for shopping, especially not baby toys. I was instead more worried about how he'll react when he see me or honestly how should I react when I see him. Should I react with happiness? Or should I turn a cold shoulder? The answers to everything was getting more tougher as if like a video game where everything becomes tougher with each level.
"Let's go together," Kaesy pulled me out when I told her that I'll wait for her in the car while she grabbed whatever she thought would be best.
"Alright, but don't ask me anything I don't have a clue about toys or shopping," I said following her into the store.
She pulled me to different corners and bought almost everything from balls to toy guns.
"I'll pay," Kaesy said when we reached the counter.
"No, I can't let you do that," I protested,"You being here with me and supporting me in everything is more than enough," I said touched by her kindness.
"Reuben, I insist."
I inhaled deeply, "Alright."
We arrived shortly at the given address. The mansion was big and modern. She must be doing well on her own. Why do I even care?
I was starting to get tensed as we neared the front door. I felt stiff and my throat went dry and coarse.
I looked at Kaesy, she gave a small smile and nodded. Finally, I gathered all my courage and rang the doorbell.
