Tragic Rescue: Part 9
Jenny was terrified as she was led by the two guards to an unknown destination. They made her walk on her knees through dirt and rocks. She even guessed that there was some glass as well as she looked and saw blood dripping onto the ground. Sharp pains came from her knees as the guard holding the chain that connected to her neck yanked hard on it when she stopped walking. She fell face down giving her some new cuts and bruises. She cried in pain as the other guard kicked her and cracked the whip down on her.
"Get up, Demon," he said.
"On your feet," the guard holding the chain said. "It's time to take your punishment."
He shoved her forward and she saw a crowd of people yelling angrily at the sight of her. She looked up and saw a the stage had been set for an execution.
There were two long wooden poles that were surrounded by some small pieces of wood and other discarded items used for kindling. There were several people that held lit torches.
Jeremy saw another woman tied to one of the wooden poles. One was unoccupied and then realized who it was meant for. She may not have had her powers at the moment, but it didn't mean she couldn't fight. She kicked the guard with the ship with one of her feet, and even though she was still in a tremendous amount of pain. She wasn't just going to let them kill her.
She had distracted the guard holding the chain long enough, so she could make a run for it, but he grabbed onto the chain pulling her back. Two more guards came out of nowhere grabbing onto her legs to stop her from struggling while two other guards undid the chain and the three of them carried her over to the pole. She screamed but the first slapped her hard and wrapped a thick rope around her rendering her immobile.
She wanted to cry out for help, but there was no one. They were going to kill her, and there was nothing she could do about it. Then that bulbous man approached. He was the heartless monster who was doing this to her.
"Don't worry, little one," the woman tied to the other stake said. "You will not die today."
"Don't lie to the girl," the man said with contempt in her voice.
He just laughed again. "This is your last chance, Laela. I can let you live, but only if you pledge your allegiance to me." She only spit in his face. "Very well."
He came down off the pier and faced the blood thirsty crowd. "Today is a great day for our town, because we have purged the evil that has been stalking us.
These two women who are not woman at all but demons from the pit of hell come to feed on us, fueling our fears, filling us with jealousy and hate. They invade our very nightmares blinding us to their true nature. What say you the people? What shall be their fate?
"Get rid of them!" someone in the crowd shouted.
"Burn 'em!" shouted another.
The crowd broke out into a frenzy which made Judge Oakley smile, but there was one onlooker in the crowd who wasn't clamoring for the death of these two women. "The people have spoken!" Judge Oakley shouted.
A man came forwards. He was in cleric's clothing. He approached the Judge with caution. "You must stop this madness," he said.
"Father Nealand," Judge Oakley said. "The people have spoken." Judge Oakley turned to his soon to be victims. "It is time! Torch barriers!"
They came forward as Jenny screamed. She hated fire, and now it was going to be the very thing that ended her life. In a cage near the pier there was a dog barking. The Judge looked over at him and smiled sadistically.
"Patience, Scurvy," he said, looking the dog in the eyes. "Your turn will come."
The dog growled in protest. You'll pay for this Oakley. When Mike finds out about this and he will, you're a dead man.
"I'm counting on your Master finding out," Judge Oakley said and laughed sadistically. "But I will not be so easy to kill."
"Burn them now!" Oakley shouted to his torch barriers. They were in dark brown cloaks. As the first one approached he was attacked but another. Jenny looked to see a hint of a pair of blue eyes. Even in the dark she would always recognize them. She kept her cool while struggling to get out of her bonds.
"Stay still, little one," she said the woman who was opposite her say. She did as the woman said, but before she could take a moment to relax one of the torch barriers touched down on the pier. Jenny screamed as she realized the kindling had been lit.
She saw the cloaked figure with the blues eyes bring down his hood. "Jenny!" he screamed. She was a few feet away but he leaped into the air. He landed right next to Jenny.
"Denny," she coughed out. It was getting hard to breathe as the fire came closer. He took out a knife and cut the ropes that bound her to the pole. She was crying hysterically as Denny picked her up in his arms. He looked over at Laela. "What about you?"
"Don't worry about me!" Laela shouted. "Just get her out of here."
Denny leaped over the fire. After he got Jenny to safety he had every intention of going back for Laela, but the fire quickly engulfed her and she cried out one last word. Denny didn't understand it's meaning, but all he knew is that he had to get Jenny to safety.
Using his powers he had exposed himself to these people and he wasn't about to be captured.
Denny looked over at Reese who was fending off the angry mob as best he could with the lit torch. "Denny, get her out of here, now!" Reese shouted to him. He had taken down all but one of the torch barriers. The person behind the cloak revealed himself which made Reese even angrier.
"Charlie, you son of the bitch!' He shouted.
"Well, well, if it isn't little Reese Faigon. So how's Cree?" he asked sarcastically. "Does she scream out my name when you fuck her?"
"Shut you filthy mouth!" Reese shouted and lunged at him, dropping the torch. It was a stupid thing to do, but he just wasn't thinking. He grabbed a hold of Charlie and wrestled him to the ground.
Out of nowhere Reese saw a beam of light come off the ground. It was coming from an object resting nearby. He looked at it and saw that is was the missing crystal. He tried to grab for it but Charlie held him back. Then he gave one quick punch to the face and then picked up the crystal.
"You've caused enough trouble, haven't you?" Reese said as he picked it up. He held it in his hands for a few seconds and the light died down to nothing. Reese looked up and saw that Ethan Borden, the guy Nathaniel had told them about. He had a cross bow aimed towards them. Before Reese could react it fired it. Reese ducked just in time to see the arrow hit the cage Scurvy was in. It had freed him and jumped out.
Hey, kid, need some help! Scurvy asked as he leaped towards the angry crowd. He felt his powers come back and he transformed into his were-wolf form. A few people from the crowd screamed in terror as Scurvy chased after them.
Reese looked back over at Charlie only to be sucker-punched. The impact was so hard that he dropped the crystal and fell to the ground. "Next time, pretty boy."
Charlie said and then disappeared. He had the crystal with him, and Reese felt like he had failed once again. "Jordon!" Reese called out. His friend came over to him as the crowd was running from a certain were-dog that had them all on the run. "We have to meet up with the girls and Denny and get the hell out of here."
They looked around to see that Judge Oakley had disappeared but the cleric known as Father Nealy remained as he knelt over the pier that contained the charred body of Laela. He was actually weeping. He looked up to see the two boys staring down at him.
"This is a tragic day," he said. "An innocent is dead, and this town will follow."
"We tried..." Reese started to say.
"There wasn't anything more you could have done." Reese looked back to see Nathaniel standing behind him. "This is on me. I failed Laela and her child."
"She was with child?" the old priest asked. He looked on in horror. "We will all die because of this. The death of two innocents will not go unpunished."
Jonathan Gamgee approached with his father. He looked at the empty cage and the arrow sticking out of it. He pulled the arrow out and held it in his hands Ethan was a few yards away as Jonathan took arrow and held it up with one hand. "Next time you want to borrow one of my weapons. Ask."
Ethan approached and handed the cross bow to Jonathan. He held it in front of him. "Keep it," Jonathan said.
Ethan smiled weakly and held out his hand. "I guess this means you wouldn't mind if I married your sister."
"Please, take her," Jonathan said as he shook Ethan's hand. "But it's you funeral."
Sam approached the remains of Laela's charred body. It was black, cold and unrecognizable, but there was something shining from the ashes. It was gold, and Sam realized it was the coin she always carried. The priest was about to reach for it.
"No, that's not for us to take," he said. He bowed his head with a tear coming from his eye. He then looked up at Reese and Jordon. "Where are the other?"
"At the top of the hill, hidden in the woods," Reese said.
"Then go," Sam said. "If the crowd comes back they'll try and kill all of you. They saw what you friend did, so this place is no longer safe for any of you."
Reese gave his thanks as he and Jordon took off to find their friends.
When Reese and Jordon finally reached the clearing they found Sophie tending to Jenny's wounds. Denny also had a few burn marks, but he was so worried about his girlfriend. She had more bruises than he did and he wished he could have gone back and pummeled those guards that tortured her. She was still shaking but he held onto her as Sophie finished dressing her wounds.
There was another woman there as well. She looked young and beautiful, no more than eighteen, but when she looked down at the mess Jenny was in there was a tears in her eyes. She looked up at the older man who gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and approached Jenny.
She knelt down with a look of sorrow in her eyes. There was a bracelet on her wrist, and she slowly took it off. The young woman they all saw faded away to reveal an older woman in her forties with slightly graying hair.
"I believe this belongs to you," she said and handed the bracelet back to Jenny.
"Thank you," Jenny said as she took the bracelet from the woman.
"No, thank you," she said. "You made see what it was like to be young again, but I don't need youth. I have something far better."
She rose to her feet and walked back over to the older man. They walked off together leaving the seven young people at the edge of the forest.
"So what do we do know?" Cree asked.
Suddenly Jordon was holding his head. "Hey, are you okay?" Millie asked.
Jordon shook his head and heard a voice coming from inside his head. Jordon, I know where Charlie has gone. He heard the voice of his sister say. Follow my voice and you will find him.
"She is right, Jordon Demsey." Suddenly a woman appeared before them. She had long white hair and wore a shimmering dress that contained four different shades of blue. She was barefoot but her feet didn't seem to touch the ground as didn't the long transparent train that hung off her short shirt.
"Who the hell is that?" Denny asked. He was still livid about almost losing Jenny.
"Delphi," Cree said. "What are you doing here?"
"There is no time to lose," she said. "Charles is trying to reactivate that crystal, and if he does the world will be lost. You can stop him, but you mustn't hesitate."
"How do we find him?" Cree asked.
"Dora knows," Jordon said. "She contacted me again."
"Then let's get out of here," Reese said as they all stood up. Denny held onto Jenny, who was still a little weak, but she assured him that she was fine.
Jordon concentrated on his sister's voice when Millie looked on in the distance.
"Hey, is that... No, it can't be," she said as she saw someone familiar. "It's Daddy."
"Who?" Denny asked.
"Mike, you dupe," she said and smacked him on the arm.
"Would you two cut it out?" Reese said in a scolding tone.
Millie could see the man looking towards them and wondered if he recognized them. It was too late to find out as they all shifted thanks to Jordon and promptly disappeared. Delphi vanished as well leaving Sophie there alone. She knew she would be seeing them again if only in a vision.
Wherever they ended up it would be their fate. Sophie had hers as well and thought fondly about her encounter with the world's future heroes.
The end... until the next one.
