House Guest: Part 3
After dinner, Sophie took Jenny upstairs to the room she shared with Amelia. It was a pretty room, but not as nice as her room at school. There were two beds, a dresser and a small wooden desk next to a bookshelf. There was also a window with a view of the woods that Jenny narrowly escaped from.
She looked out that window as if in a daze until Sophie's voice pulled her back into reality. "I would like to show you something," Sophie said.
"Sure," Jenny said as she sat on Sophie's bed as she took something off the shelf. It looked like a brown leather case. Sophie brought it over to the bed and opened it. There were a number of pencil drawings. One looked like a sketch of Suncerayer, one of the ancients she had met on their first trip through time.
"I know him," Jenny said. "But how...?"
"I've had dreams about him," Sophie said. "Papa tells stories of the ancients. No one ever believes his stories, especially my older brother and sister, but I know they're real."
"Then you have visions too?" Jenny asked. Sophie nodded slowly. It seemed to Jenny that Sophie admitted a piece of information that she never had revealed to anyone.
"So, besides this Jordon do your other friends have... gifts too?" Sophie asked.
"Yeah," Jenny said. "Much cooler than mine."
"Cooler?" Sophie questioned, not fully understanding what Jenny had said. "Is their body temperatures lower than normal?"
"No," Jenny said laughing. "It's just an expression. I mean their powers are in some ways better, and they can blend in much easier than I can."
"I don't believe that<" Sophie said, shaking her head. "Sometimes I wish I could be invisible. Then I could find out what people really think."
"You may not like what you find out," Jenny said, her voice taking a darker tone. She looked away. There was intensity in the air than was only cut by Sophie's voice.
"So, do you draw?" Sophie asked.
"No, not really, but I like to take pictures," Jenny said and she pulled out a little photo album, which in intrigued Sophie. Jenny handed the little black velvet book to her new friend. She slowly opened it, as her eyes grew wide and a look of awe came about her face.
"These are photographs?" Sophie asked. Jenny nodded. "They're so colorful."
"That's my dad," Jenny said and took a picture out and handed it to Sophie. As she held the picture in her hand, her fingers softly brushed against the paper. She seemed more intrigued by the soft texture of the material. She slipped the picture back into its plastic slip and turned the page. "And here's a picture of me and my two best friends. That's Millie and Cree."
Sophie smiled and turned the page and saw a picture of a boy with dusty brown hair and piercing eyes. "Who's this?"
Jenny blushed a little at Sophie's question. "Oh, that's Denny. He's my boyfriend."
"He's so handsome," Sophie said. "Are you betrothed?"
"What?" Jenny jumped up in surprise. "Do you mean like to get married?"
"Of course," Sophie said.
"We're too young for that," Jenny said, shaking her head. "We haven't been dating very long, plus we would both like to go to college before we think about that."
"Do you love him?" Sophie asked.
Jenny hesitated for a moment, but she already knew the answer to that question although she never said it out loud. "Yes, I do," she said. She hadn't realized she said it. She just had a faraway look on her face.
"It sounds so romantic," she said with a big smile on her face. "I hope when I'm old enough I find a handsome suitor like yours."
"Don't count on it, Sophie," Amelia said, walking into the room. "You're too homely looking. You will be lucky to marry a poor pig farmer with bad breath."
Sophie gave her sister a dirty look. "Amelia, you may be prettier than I am, but men want more than just a pretty face. Brains are more important. That's what Papa says anyway."
"Tell that to Ethan Bordon. He is the only son of the richest and most prominent family in town." Amelia sat down at her vanity table and picked up her brush and started to brush out her hair. "Do you think he would give me a second look if I looked like you?"
"Ethan Bordon is a bore," Sophie said, getting into her sister's face. She snatched the brush out of her hand and threw it across the room. "All he talks about is himself, and his family is nothing but puppets of Judge Oakley. Everyone knows he's the most corrupt man in town."
"Watch your tongue, Sophie, or they just might burn you," Amelia said, getting up out of her chair. Even though she was taller than her sister, Sophie didn't seem intimidated.
"That doesn't scare me," Sophie said. "Besides, the witch trials are long over, and don't be scaring Jenny like that."
"Don't worry, Sophie," Jenny said, walking over and standing next to her. "That doesn't scare me. I studied the witch trials in school, and I'm no witch. Furthermore, I'm used to threats from ignorant people."
Amelia stared her down, but Jenny didn't back off. She stood her ground, and it felt good to do so. Amelia just turned and walked out.
Sophie broke out laughing, which made Jenny laugh as well. She seemed more relaxed after that, and thought being stuck here wouldn't be so bad.

To be Continued...
Thanks to reading. Next up is a Amelia and Jonathan scene, and like some brothers and sisters they don't really get along.
