Conspiracies: Part 3

Meanwhile Scurvy led his new friends towards Laela's farmhouse. He knew she would be worried, since he had been out most of the night. Reese walked beside him with Cree just behind. Denny was a few feet behind and hesitated in keeping up, but not so far behind that he lost sight of them.

So, kid, how ya manage to get a hot chick like that? Scurvy turned to Reese and asked.

"Excuse me?" Reese asked, not really paying attention.

The babe with the hot body back there, he clarified.

"Well, um, that's a long story," Reese said nervously.

"Hey, what is he saying?" Cree asked him as she came up beside him and hooked her arm into his.

"Oh, nothing, Cree," Reese said, but she gave him a look like she didn't believe him. "He just asked how we met."

That's not what I asked, pretty boy. Does your girl know you're lying to her? Scurvy asked and there seemed to be a huge grin on his face.

Reese was too embarrassed to answer. He really didn't want Cree to know what they were talking about. Instead he tried to change the subject. "So... how much further?"

Just across that hill over there, and don't try to change the subject. I'll find out sooner or later. I always do. Don't you know being a dog has its advantages? People unknowingly spill their guts around me all the time. They got no idea I understand every word they say.

"I'll remember that," Reese said.

Denny suddenly came up next to them. "You've really reached an all-time low, man, talkin' to dogs. I can't wait to tell the rest of the guys on the team. You'll never live it down."

Reese just groaned. Denny never let anything go, and since Jordon wasn't around for him to torture he was the next one on Denny's hit list. As they hiked on, Scurvy kept looking back with an impatient look on his face.

The perils of traveling with humans, he groaned. At least hiking the travel with the Gamgee kids is much easier. They ain't so soft, well accept for that Amelia, never met a human girl who could complain so much.

"Who are the Gamgee kids?" Reese asked.

Oh, just about the only Sadians in this town, well accept for Laela and Nathaniel. There's that crazy lady in town, but nobody here would admit to being a Sadian, get ya burned it would.

"Burned!?" Reese shouted out in horror. "What do you mean burned?"

Hey, around here bein' a Sadian is the same as bein' a witch, Scurvy said. Gotta hide what ya are, even me. If that dick Judge Oakley knew about me he'd barbeque me for sure. Now, there's a man with secrets. Don't know what they are yet, but I'm going to find out.

"Hey, is that it?" Cree asked, pointing to a farmhouse that lay in the distance.

Reese looked down at Scurvy. Yeah, kid, that's it. Let's go. Scurvy ran across the clearing with his human companions doing their best to keep up.

Cree could see a girl with dark hair and boy with glasses. She just wondered if that could be Millie and Jordon. What were the odds they found their way here, and if they made it here then maybe Jenny were here too.

The girl with the dark hair looked up almost dropping the bucket she was carrying. She set it down and ran towards Cree. "Hey, girlfriend, is that you?" the girl asked when she was only a few feet away from her.

"Millie, how did you...?" Cree started to say but was cut off by her excitable friend.

"It's a long story," Millie said. "I'll tell you when we get inside." The two girls walked to the house together. Millie picked up the bucket that she set down that was full of water. "So how did you know to come here?"

"Would you believe we were rescued by a dog after almost being killed by a wolf, and get this, Reese can talk to him."

"Must be that that Sadian dog Nathaniel told us about. Is his name Scurvy?"

"Yeah, that's the one," Cree said as they entered the farmhouse. Millie led Cree into the kitchen where Millie set the bucket down. Cree noticed a woman cooking at the stove.

"Here's your water, Laela," Millie said. "And I want you to meet a friend of mine. This is Cree. The one I told you about."

''ello, Cree," Laela said slowly and held out her hand for the girl. "The other one you mentioned. Has she arrived also?"

"Oh, I almost forgot," Millie said, horrified at the thought of forgetting about her other friend. "Cree, is Jenny with you?"

"No, I hoped she would be with you," Cree said with a worried look on her face.

"This is horrible," Millie said. "What if someone found her or her bracelet stopped working, or..."

"Hey, let's not jump to conclusions until we know for sure. Just think of it this way, a five foot tall blue-skinned girl couldn't be that hard to find."

"That's what I'm afraid of, Cree. If some crazy villager spotted her they might just set a lynch mob after her.

Hey, they talkin' about the blue babe over at the Gamgee farm? Scury asked as he entered the kitchen. Reese and Denny were right behind him.

"Scurvy, my friend," Laela said, turning and looking down at him. "You have seen their companion?"

If it's some blue girl that can turn invisible, then yeah. She's over at the Gamgee's. I left her there after Sophie came in the barn. She's with them, so she'll be safe enough. Ole Sam won't let anything happen to her.

"That is true. Sam is a good friend and would protect any Sadian, especially one such as your friend. A true Sadain is very rare, and from what you have said," Laela said, directing the statement at Millie. "I believe your friend Jenny to be one."

"That's what the ancients said," Cree said. Laela's mouth dropped open.

"The ancients," she said as if she were in shock. "But how could...?"

"It's simple," Denny said. "The idiot smart guy's powers went haywire and we ended up how many thousand years in the past. And if something happens to my girlfriend because of that moron, I'll kill him."

Like I said, she's safe with the Gamgees, Scurvy scowled. Reese jumped back. He just could not get used to a talking dog.

"What's that mutt saying?" Denny asked, turning to Reese.

Suddenly Scurvy turned to Denny growling and showing his teeth.

"Scurvy, stop!" Leala shouted. She turned to Denny who had a look of fear on his face. "Apologize," she demanded.

"What? To a stupid dog," Denny said. Scurvy snarled louder ready to pounce on him.

"Denny, just do it," Reese yelled at him.

"Okay, okay, I'm sorry," he said, holding up his hands in front of him defensively.

"You are called Reese," Laela asked, directing the question at the dark-haired boy. "Your friend spoke of you." She came closer to him looking deep into his eyes. She leaned in close breathing in the air around him. "Your scent is familiar."

"Excuse me," Reese said in confusion.

"You have great power, young one," she said. "Much still undiscovered."

"That's what my mother always tells me," Reese said, studying the woman.

The kid's got to be some kind of telepathy, since he can talk to me, Scurvy said.

"Much more than that," Laela said. "I would like to further speak with you, young Reese, but you all must be getting hungry after you're long journey.

"Nathaniel, please, show the boys where they will be sleeping."

"As you wish, Laela," Nathaniel said, dropping his head slightly. "Come on, boys. Your friend, Jordon, you say, he's already in the barn."

"Barn?! I'm not sleeping..." Denny started to protest, but was silenced by Reese covering his mouth.

"Now, you girls can help with dinner," Laela said.

"Oh, alright," Millie said, "but I warn you I can't cook."

"That's true," Cree said jokingly. "I remember the time you tried to make cookies for that cooking class. They were heavier than boulders and tasted like cardboard."

"Well, we can't all be a culinary geniuses like you," Millie said.

"What, genius, I only made regular stuff," Cree said as Laela handed her an apron.

"Not according to Reese. Remember that double chocolate mousse cake you made with the cherries on top for his birthday."

"Well, that was special, plus I had help," Cree said as Laela put her to work tenderizing the meat.

"Well, what can I do?" Millie said. She was feeling useless at that point.

"You can set the table for dinner," Laela said.

"Alright, but where is everything?" Millie asked.

"In that cabinet in the far corner," Laela said, opening the cabinet door. Millie took out the right amount of plates they needed and carried them into the dining room. An hour had gone by and dinner was just about ready. Laela had shown Cree and Millie to the guestroom. The two girls found a moment to relax even though they were still worried about Jenny.

They were sitting on one of the beds chatting when Laela came in. She was holding two garments in her arms. "I have brought you girls some proper attire. If you are to blend in for you stay here you cannot walk around in those clothes."

"That's true," Cree said. "We don't exactly blend dressed like this ."

"Yeah, whoever heard of girls wearing jeans in 1710."

Laela handed the girls the dresses and boots. "When you are finished dressing could one of you collect the boys?"

"Sure, Laela," Cree said. "And thank you. We appreciate your kindness." Laela smiled at them before leaving the room. Cree laid the dresses out on the bed. "So what do you think?"

"Not really my taste," Millie said.

"And that white toga on our last trip was?" Cree teased. "Just think of it as an elaborate costume party."

"I wish Jenny were here," Millie said, taking the dark blue dress with the black trim. "She would be laughing this up."

"We'll see her soon enough," Cree said as she picked up the red dress with the black trim. "Well, let's get charged."

It took a good fifteen minutes for Cree to get into her dress, but for Millie it was no problem. She lived for fashion and even in her prairie girl dress she had to admit that she looked good.

"I feel ridiculous," Cree said.

"Like you said before we'll blend much better in these," Millie said as she was putting on a pair of boots. "These are kind of comfortable."

"I'll remember the next time we go shoe shopping," Cree said as Millie helped her on with her boots.

"Well, let's go get the boys," Millie said.

"Fine, but if any one of them laughs at me they're going to see just how powerful I really am."

"Well, if Denny says anything I'll zap him into a crispy critter."

Cree laughed at that. She knew how much Millie and Denny hated each other. She just hoped they wouldn't one day kill each other. The girl's walked out of the farmhouse and towards the barn. The door was wide open and Millie couldn't wait to see Jordon, although Cree hesitated to meet up with the boys.

"Millie, why don't you go in without me," Cree said. She looked down at her dress. "I'm just not quite ready to be seen like this."

"Sure, whatever," Millie said and walked over to the barn's entrance. "Hey, boys, anyone hungry?" They all looked strangely at Millie then each other. "Dinner, you pervs."

"Oh, course," Reese said. "I knew that's what you meant."

"Sure you did," Millie said, laughing at him. She walked swiftly over to Jordon. "Hey, handsome, you like?"

"I could get used to it," he said as she planted a big sloppy kiss on him, which startled him a little. His face was turning red at her impromptu display of affection. If he had his way he would have waited to do this is private.

"So, where's Cree?" Reese asked as Millie finally released her boyfriend from her embrace. She still held onto Jordon's hand as she looked over towards Reese.

"She's just outside," Millie said. "I think she's a little embarrassed by the clothes. You know how much Cree hates to wear dresses."

"I think I'll go keep her company," Reese said and quickly left the barn.

The sun was just starting to go down when he spotted Cree. The night was clear and he could see the faint light bouncing off her skin and hair. She was breathtaking and in his opinion the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.

"Cree," he said in a soft voice.

She turned quickly seeing him staring at her. "Don't laugh."

"Why would I laugh? I think you look beautiful, like a gothic princess."

She turned away blushing. "I feel so silly dressed like this."

"No sillier than I do," Reese said. "That Nathaniel guy brought us some clothes. Denny hates them, but Jordon seems okay with it, not like those gladiator outfits."

Cree laughed at that. "I don't know. You looked awfully sexy in that armor."

"And you look awfully sexy in that dress," he said, looking intensely into her eyes. Before she had a chance to protest his lips came crashing down on hers. They stayed like that for a few minutes until they heard whistles coming a short distance away.

"Way to go, Reese," Denny said, approaching his friend. "So is there more to this show."

"This ain't no show, Denny," Cree said feeling embarrassed.

"Sure it is. Not often do we see you in a dress," he teased.

She said nothing, just gave him an evil stare as Reese led her towards the farmhouse.
