Life without a life
Alex awoke with a jolt. He was having a nightmare. There were people screaming and he couldn't find his family, couldn't find his friends. There were people dying and blood and more screams. He shook it off and got off of the old sofa he'd been lying on. He stretched and felt a pain in his...well his everything. Limping, he got up and walked to the store. The street was empty, but he heard people somewhere far away. Finally, he found a store that didn't look torn apart at the hinges. He could manage some broken glass, no problem.
He rummaged around the store for a while and found some raw turkey and a few coffee beans. He wasn't that hungry anyways. Tired from the pain in his left foot-or what used to be his left foot-he sat down on the incredibly low counter and looked around. The shop must've been recently ransacked by those who survived. Suddenly he heard the groan of a hoard of zombies from across the street. Acting upon his human instincts he hid, even though he didn't have too. He still didn't like the way they looked so miserable and well... disfigured. He just couldn't describe it! They had an oddness that didn't feel right, even though they were still human beings.
They were just horribly broken.
When the groans of the zombies had passed, he got out from behind the counter and limped back to the apartment building he'd woken up in. He didn't know how he remembered where it was- maybe he'd lived in New York that long -but it wasn't hard. As he arrived he heard something. It sounded like...sobbing? He walked towards the noise, afraid of what he might find. A child lay in an alleyway. He didn't look much older than his daughter Angie. Upon hearing him, the little boy looked around and his tear-stained and puffy, red eyes met Alexander's.
Poor kid, he thought I hope he's alright...
Suddenly Alex felt the urge for food. An urge to kill. No... no he couldn't! Not this poor child! He didn't deserve this! Against his will, he walked closer to the kid. The young boy tried to move but he was like a deer in headlights. Alex had felt like that before. No matter how much he struggled against himself he just couldn't help it. It was like a little demon was on his shoulder, telling him what to do.
Eat. N-no! But look at him! So tender and helpless...he was made to be eaten! NO, HE DOESN'T DESERVE THIS, I CAN'T, I WON'T! I WOULD RATHER STARVE! Ugh, you ruin everything. Wait, no WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?
He did what he could. " KID RUN! PLEASE...". That seemed to jolt the kid out of whatever trance he was in. He got up and ran as fast as he could. But it wasn't enough. This kid was probably 7 and Alex was a full grown man. He caught up with him in no time and bit his leg. Alex started silently crying. The boy fell and Alex grabbed his neck and bit down. Hard. The poor boy started bleeding and fell. He was still breathing, but Alex knew he wouldn't last long like that.
Might as well put him out of his misery.
Unfortunately, the voice in his head was right. Alex sobbed as he feasted on the boy and he loathed himself for doing such a thing. The taste of the flesh made him sick. But he ate anyways. By the time he was done, the poor boy lay there, lifeless. Alex slept in the alleyway that night.
He swore to NEVER harm another human in such a way again.
~Hey there! Author here! So, um, I don't think this sucks, do you think it sucks? I use too much commas I know that, but it is what is. I kept thinking to not make this short so I wrote a lot as you can see. Does this count as angst? Maybe, depends how you feel about it. Ermmm this is awkward. Bye ✌🏽!~
