Home away from home?
They drove in silence toward the camp. Well not complete silence, they may have run over a zombie or two which always made Alex wince. He just couldn't shake the fact that these people were just like him. Innocent and partially normal.
Didn't they all deserve a little mercy?
Eventually they arrived there. Upon seeing the car parked, Lafayette ran up- seeing as he had to put up with Madison all day- and Madison looked like well...Madison. Nonchalant and unchanging as usual.
That was until he spotted Alex in the car. "Thomas, who's that in the back?" "Um Jemmy, John has always been ther-" "no I meant..." he gestured toward Alex "...that." Those words stung Alex harder than the pain of limping around all day.
So he was an "it" now? Not a "he" a or "them" or a person? Well played James. He thought as he slowly got out the car.
Thomas walked over to Madison and put his hands on his shoulders. "You're probably going to kill me and then everyone here before I can finish this sentence but... webroughtazombiehome."
Silence. Stupid, agonizing silence.
"What?" Madison said, clearly uncomprehending. Thomas sighed and repeated slower "we brought....." he said mumbling the last part. "Thomas you know very well I can't unders-". Suddenly Mulligan cut in " We brought a zombie here, and it's Alexander, so you two better get along, or one of you guys is gonna have to go. Okay? Okay." It surprised Alex how calm he was when he said that. "Um...Hi? I know this sounds stupid but-" Alex was cut off as Lafayette ran over and hugged him.
Wow, he hadn't realized how much he missed the comforting touch of actual people. Then Madison kind of ruined the moment. "Lafayette, are you INSANE!? He's a zombie we can't trust him, he'll kill us all! Guys, what were you thinking!?" Lafayette ignored him.
"Nommez une chose que vous savez que me déteste." He asked Alex in French. "Um, Laf I don't know if he remembers any of tha-" " tais-toi! Alexander mon ami s'il vous plaît...". Well that's easy, Alex thought there are plenty of things that Laf hates. But he knew a certain pet peeve better than anyone else.
"Vous ye Hercule feriez un bon couple." I replied with a smirk.
" You are Alexander!" He said. Then he slapped him. "Ow! What was that for!?" Alex cried. " Je n'aime pas Hercule et si vous en reparlez, je vous jure que je vais vous blesser." He said in a mad but playful tone. "All right, we have a deal." He replied in a tone that was just as playful.
Lafayette let go and led him towards their camp fire, but he was stopped by a sudden tug on his arm and he stumbled backwards. Madison bent down over him and whispered " you might have everyone else fooled, but I know for a matter-of-fact, that you're still a jerk, like before, except now it's worse. I will do whatever I have to to get rid of you. Okay? Okay." He said and with a smirk that looked way too bright and cheery he left Alex on the ground. He would've started crying had Thomas not walked over and offered him a hand.
"Come on lil' freak, lets go satisfy your hunger." He said, half teasing. Had he not seen what had just happened? Probably not because characters in books are always so oblivious to bully's and they're gullible and easily foo- pretend I didn't say that.
They sat around the fire as Mulligan and Lafayette walked back and forth bringing sausages and ham and pork to be roasted in the fire. They ate in silence at first until Thomas broke it. "So..A-Hamilton?" God, why wouldn't Thomas leave him alone. "Yeah?" "Are you...offended?" He said trying to hide a smirk. "No...why?" A huge grin spread across his face "Because we're eating roasted ham." His voice got high near the end and he and Madison started laughing. Lafayette and Mulligan chuckled a little bit but soon they were laughing too. John - being the great friend he is- just rolled his eyes and put his ham down to start eating a sausage.
"You guys are mean." Alex grumbled. "What about me?" John asked, offended. "You're cool." Alex replied. John smiled, pleased. Sooner or later everyone decided they'd head to bed. "Wait," Madison said "what about Hamilton?"
Alex had a feeling Madison didn't feel comfortable with him around and he knew he didn't want to have Alex on site while everyone was sleeping. Even he had to admit, it would've been the perfect crime, the perfect murder. But he wasn't going to hurt anyone, not even Madison.
"Oh, I can just sleep outside, I'm used to it." He realized he sounded suspicious and added "like a couple yards away outside." Everyone seemed convinced except Jefferson and Madison. "Yeah, how many yards exactly?" Jefferson asked. "Like..5." Alexander answered "Farther." "Fine, 10!"
Thomas counted how far away he'd be. 30 feet was a long way away and though he didn't like to admit it, he didn't really want Alexander out of his sight. He cared about his well-being.
He cared about him.
"Alright that's cool." Thomas answered not wanting to increase the distance. Madison thought about it. "No, go farther than that." Jeez he's pushy. Alex thought to himself. "15?" Madison thought this over. 45 feet apparently wasn't enough. "Try 20." "20!?" John exclaimed. "Okay, that's a bit far dontcha think?" "Well, if you guys want to die or turn into zombies overnight then fine! Otherwise, I'm open to suggestions!" For a while no one spoke. Then Hercules looked up from deep thought and said, " Why don't we lock him up? Like, with a chain or something." He said looking at Lafayette knowingly. "Okay, well I'm not entirely on board with that but whatever. The thing is, where are we gonna get a chain?" Alex asked.
Lafayette suddenly grinned. "I told you that trip to the police station was worth a shot." He said and ran back to his little tent. When he returned he was holding a pair of handcuffs. "Not to mention they're authentic!" He added a little too cheerily. In all honest truth, he was just happy to help.
Now Alexander was scared. Was he really gonna stand to be chained up to the ground so far away from any sign of life? No, no I'm not he said to himself. He turned to face Madison about to argue but he was whispering something to Thomas. It was probably about him.
How nostalgic.
With each of his whispers Thomas looked a bit more worried, which scared Alex, because he'd never seen him so disturbed. James noticed he was listening in and he scowled at him, a sign to piss off. So Alex wandered near the tents hoping to lay down on something that wasn't an old sofa.
While the others talked Alex noticed something in the bushes. Green eyes, that looked familiar, but he couldn't quite place it. All the memories came flooding back, he remembered the life draining from those green eyes. This was the child he'd killed. He'd come back as a zombie.
"H-hey kid!" He whispered, careful not to draw the attention of the others. "I-I'm sorry about well...killing you. Can you understand me?" The child nodded and he relaxed. The boy had messy brown hair and little scratches and bruises here and there. He reminded him of Phillip, but he knew there was no way this was him. He didn't have freckles. "What's your name kid?" "Finnagan...Finnagan Boundys...but a lot of people call me Finn." "Well Finn how'd you find your way out here?" "The zombies back in the city scared me...they just look so weird." "Well, you'll get used to it.". Glancing over at the fire place he noticed some leftover pork. "Hey, you hungry?" Finn shook his head.
But his stomach said otherwise.
Alex made for the pork as fast as he could and brought it back to Finn. "Thank you sir, I haven't had a cooked meal in days." "Please, I'm Alexander Hamilton, but you can call me Alex." "Thanks! Zombie friends?" "Heh, zombie friends." "Thanks Alex! Well, I haves to go now, but...can I come back tomorrow?" Alex thought about this. He'd be putting him and Finn in danger if he came near so many humans every night. Maybe he could make this a biweekly thing. "Sure Finn, but next week, you can't come, it's too dangerous. But you can come the week after that!" "Okay! Well, I'll see you tomorrow Alex!" "Bye Finn!" With that Finn disappeared into the bush once again.
"So, who's Finn?"
