Dear Tate ~
I hope this letter finds you well.
Wow. That was stuffy! I promised myself I would do this, but now that I'm sitting here doing it, I can't stop nervous-laughing. This is pretty ridiculous. You might not even remember me. But I really hope you do.
I stopped in The Imp’s Bottle on my last night in the States. We talked about literature, music, the bar's name, me going to Scotland for grad school...and many other things that seem impossible to write in a list for some reason. Maybe because they were more about the feelings than the words? I don't know. I can't explain it. What I do know is that our conversation was the best one I've ever had.
I've thought about you a lot since I got to Edinburgh. Well, that's not true. More like since the moment I got into that Über. I've met some amazing, friendly people here (both locals and imports like me), but I don't have half the connection with a single one of them that I had with you. A couple nights ago I heard "Hungry Heart" by Bruce Springsteen. That was the song that was playing when we met, remember? Hearing it again seemed like a sign, so I looked up the address for The Imp’s Bottle and promised myself I'd write to you.
I'll be coming home for Christmas break. No pressure, of course, but if you're free we could have that drink. I'd really like to see you. And, hey, if you kept that key I gave you, I'll show you what it opens.
I'm including my contact information. Call anytime. Or if long distance calls are pricey, feel free to write back. I know letters are kind of old fashioned, but maybe that's why I like them. It's a lost art and an underrated means of communication.
Alright, that's all I have for now. I hope to see you in December. Take care, Tate. You're a very special person. Meeting you changed me for the better. I want you to know that.
Until we meet again.
Love,
Kate
