Chapter Five

Chloe’s POV

I sat at a table for two, at me and Isabel’s favourite restaurant, TGI Friday’s. My eyes were struck to the clock as it ticked endlessly.

Isabel was almost half a hour late for dinner. I can’t believe she’d do this; especially on our five year friend-aversery! The waitress came up to me for the twentieth time. “I don’t know where she is. Just bring me the bill for my drink.” Scrolling through the texts that I have previously sent throughout the time I’ve spent here, I shook my head in disappointment.

I finished up my margarita and ran out the double doors. I jogged down the sidewalk until I reached a sign that read, ‘Sydney, Australia Boat Dock’. I ran for the nearest open gate and threw myself in the water.

My scarlet tail lit up the water around me, creating a dazzling glow. I kept my eyes straight ahead and swam as prompt as my tail would let me. I could see Shark Island up ahead. Shark Island used to be a popular tourist attraction, until the waters around it lived up ti its name. Being a mermaid is an advantage to me because the sharks think I’m one of them.

I swam up the beach and drug myself along the sand until the heat of the afternoon sun allowed my legs to make an appearance. I straightened out my peachy pink Hollister bone yard beach dress that Isabel gave me on our last anniversary. My hair was still dripping wet, so I leaned over and shook it out as if I were a pooch.

I used my power to curve nature to weave my own homemade yoga mat. After a crappy job at that, I plopped down and pulled my legs up to my chest, burying my face into my lap.

Isabel’s POV

“Mum, Dad! You have to understand me! These boys only found out because Chloe was trying to save someone’s life! We aren’t in any danger here.” I threw my hands on my hips and scowled at my obviously deaf parents. “You don’t know that. They could report you and within minutes, you’ll be a dissected frog!” My obnoxious sigh popped a finishing argument into my head.

“Chloe has fallen in love with one of them!”

I turned on my heels and stomped out the front door, making sure to leave it wide open.

Pulling out my phone, I noticed that I had twenty missed calls and forty eight texts, all from Chloe.

Oh no. I forgot!

I ran to the boat docks and dove into the water. I felt that familiar heat surround my legs and my bottom half transformed into my gorgeous, shimmering, purple tail.

I remained stationary and my now fiery red hair tangled around my face. I glanced around at the sea floor and saw a gleaming scarlet scale wedged in the sand.

BINGO

I swam to the place we always go when we just want to get away; Shark Island.

Peeking my head out just inches above the surface, I spotted her. I made my way onto the beach and used my powers to super dry my tail. I shook the sand off of my clothes and ran my hands through my soaked hair.

“Chloe. I can’t express how sorry I am. I got held up with my parents in an argument. Please forgive me? I know how much this means to you, and I’s never be late on purpose. This day mean as much to me as it does you.” She stood up and practically jumped into my embrace.

“It’s okay. I forgive you.” She mumbled into my shoulder as we hugged. “Now, let’s get out of here. I’m famished!” she laughed and we both ran towards the awaiting ocean, our hands inseparable.

After about a mile of swimming, we took a rest on a large boulder in the water. We laid with our stomachs facing the ground; the easiest war to perch. I exhaled deeply and we both laughed at the awkwardness I just created.

Suddenly, a large net was thrown over our backs. I desperately swatted at the heavy net, but it over powered mer. A sharp object (possibly a needle) was pierced through the skin on my back and I began to black out. I reached over and grabbed Chloe’s hand and squeezed it. The last words I heard her whimper out were,

“We’ve been caught.”
